Sierra says: The AC-20 is a long running favorite in the Volkl lineup. We categorize the AC-20 as a 90/10 for the intermediate to advanced skier. Every year when I test this price level of skis, I try to start my testing with the AC-20. It is a proven performer with category leading edgegrip. This past years test series was no different, except that I couldn't get on the AC-20 for starters. By the time I got back to the Volkl, I had been on several other skis in this range and had good feelings about most of them. Then I got on the AC-20 and the bar was definitely raised for the other price point skis. Starting out at slow speeds and low edge angles, the AC-20 felt light, nimble and maneuverable in skidded turns. As speed picked up, I raised my edge angles and applied more pressure and the ski really came alive. The grip was there, the 'pop was there in spades, and I really started to feel what the ski wanted to do. Although the radius is mid-scale, this ski prefers medium to long turns when edged up and railing a carved turn. I attribute this to the fairly firm flex. Of course, at lower speeds, it steers nicely into shorter turns, and the light weight makes the AC-20 better in moguls than you might think for a fairly stiff ski. This ski is fine for any intermediate looking for a step up from their first pair and would particularly excel for a skier that encounters hard snow regularly. Any advanced skier and quite a few EZ experts would be well suited as well. I really like skis of this waist width for developing skiers as it's a nice compromise for the conditions that the average skier encounters most. Intermediate to advanced skiers of about 160-maybe 180 lbs. will choose the 170cm. EZ experts or bigger folks may want to consider the 177.
