Author: Lux
Subject: 11923
Posted: Sep/29/2012 at 3:10pm

Lol... I can't believe people are treating their snowboard base like it was skin... It's inert. There are no pores like skin or wood. You can't moisturise it, and you can't chemically dessicate it. Do you want some Jergens Age Defying for your base too? haha!

The purpose of base cleaner is to unbond contaminants and wax from the base surface that mild soap and water cannot. Just use real base cleaner and a brush: plastic, fine brass, or silicone bristles, it won't matter. Citrus cleaner is a popular cheap alternative, albeit with a few unnecessary additives (dye, scenting agents, sometimes varnish/polish compounds).

Isopropyl alcohol and chlorinated brake cleaner are two other very strong alternative cleaners, but they vaporise extremely fast because they are almost pure solvent with no oil/slicking additives. If you're not quick, they can just dehydrate the contaminants completely while evaporating, rather than washing them out.

I also had a question about scraping it off, is there a point where you are scraping off to much? i mean i know you cant scrape to much but how do you know when it is a good time to stop scraping?

When the base surface is perceivably even and little or no wax is being removed by your scraper is when you are done scraping. This, of course, depends on how true your scraper is... a good scraper will be nearest to true straight and stay like that for many uses. If not, or if you are a perfectionist, you may be able to send it to a professional machinist to grind to perfect straight again-- an odd request, but usually the case for metal scrapers.

This keeps the base from drying out, and get your base well cleaned and ready to absorb your base layer.
4) Every little thing counts when tenths of a second means the difference between 1st and 4th
5) Even the article mentioned in the original post encourages citrus based base cleaners. It says to not pour on, just damp a cloth and wipe base, the properties of the cleaner acts as magnets that will bring up material that wax won't always bring up

Don't fight a losing battle

    Author: myke
Subject: 11923
Posted: Feb/09/2009 at 10:38pm

There are times when base cleaner does come in handy. The wax that builds up in your base can, and will, trap dirt and all kindsa nastiness over time.

I normally go over my boards with base cleaner at the end of the season - before throwing a heavy layer of wax on for summer storage. It just pulls all the built-up crud and dirt out of the base that otherwise would just be sitting there all year. Every so often over the summer - I check to make sure the bases aren't drying out - and if they are, give it a quick once over with some fresh wax (don't scrape before storing).

The other time I use base cleaner, is if my boards get seriously fouled up during the early season. You get thin spots, rocks, treestumps, etc - and you end up with all sorts of dirt and gunk in there again. Base cleaner will pull all that stuff out - and give you a nice fresh slate to work with, so you can build up a good fast base for the peak season.

Hot scraping works for day-to-day stuff, but there's times where it's just not enough. It will get surface gunk out pretty well - but if you have dirt and grime really mashed into your board - it simply will not work.

That dirt and gunk will effect your board's ability to absorb fresh wax - and cause many problems in terms of actually having a fast board. If you're careful with the cleaner, the results of cleaning with chemicals can be far superior to that of just hot scraping and hoping it gets all the dirt out.

The key is just to know when and how to use it. Use it as little as possible, as rarely as possible.
