Can accounts like this (created purely for spam) be banned?

And to please the uptight posters here who seem to know what goes on in a spammer's head I did not post anything on the spammer thread (so please remove bunched up panties from ass).

On a related note someone ought to take a look at the Funny Pics thread, there are several redundant meaningless posts there.

You're entitled to believe anything you want, personally I think your post quoted above is purely spam-alicious.

The purpose of me replying to those posts is two-fold:  1) bring attention to the thread so the mods can close or remove it; 2) if the spam-OP actually comes back and reads the replies he/she might get the feeling he/she isn't welcome here.

If someone still coded this site, you bet your ass those would have been pulled at least two years ago. :) Alas, it seems nighthawk (who wrote it and long since left) has the code completely locked up so any alteration they try and make to the site causes the whole thing to auto destruct. They dont tamper with it too often, but when they do it usually means the community button leads to an error message and you have to figure a way around to get to the forums. :) Happens more than you think. 

There is a criteria. The review has to have a purpose. We are pretty consistent in what gets pulled and what stays up. We cant of course catch all the reviews that are crappy, theres just not enough people on line to do it, plus this isnt a job despite how it sometimes feels. Ive got more important things to do than go through each item in each brand and pulling the crap reviews. For instance, id rather be WRITING reviews. Massively detailed (ONE TruSnow POINT ONLY!) reviews on the forums instead of in the review section. 

I like doing that because the review system is too damn small for me to say what i need to say. And i like being thorough. :) 

If you think we are going to buy into the idea that every review is a special unique take on it despite its OBJECTIVE value since its a perspective and all perspectives are equally valuable then im afraid youre going to get locked out. The best way to not get locked out is to stop thinking you are entitled to write whatever you want because its all valuable and its all a perspective, and instead to take on board the constructive criticism here and elsewhere and realise there is a criteria, your reviews are being judged for the content and value they add to the product description, and that we have absolutely no problem flagging them if they dont offer anything of value to the site and to the business (a massive run on sentence for the hell of it :)) Again, please understand im only being a bit blunt here because im worried youre convincing yourself its a free for all. Its not. Theres a criteria. Ive told you what it is in the other thread. And your reviews will be flagged based on it. Please dont give up if youre sincere, and take on baord what im saying. Genuinely you should really be locked out already because almost all of your reviews are lacking in any real detail. Ironically its only really because the review system is so poorly maintained that you have yet to be locked out. If it was much tidier, the criteria would go up, we'd have several new mods to replace the ones we lost over the years, and poor reviews would have very little chance of squeezing through the teensy chasms.

Yay! less people reviewing. :) To be honest, thats no skin off my nose if people think its not worth it. In fact you just made my job easier. So far from a threat, its actually something we love and would encourage. The more people put off from reviewing the easier it is to pull shit eviws, which means the more likely it is that people will put some effort in their reviews so we dont pull them. Win win. 

That being said...

I didnt pull them, i have no idea who pulled them, but lets see if i can offer a balanced account of things...

1. Raygun Review: Plenty of fluff and padding (you mention other boards but only in passing for example, little in the way of a direct comparison is drawn). But the review didnt depend on fluff... so the real meat... heres what i took away from it: the boards kinda fine in all conditions. Youre happy with it. It responds well and sounds reasonably forgiving. In truth, the threshold as i say is low, so although its lacking details i wouldnt flag it. Not only did you add some points about it in that were simple to grasp (if a little generic), but its evident immediately you rode it and are writing a genuine opinion on it. If i was thinking about buying the board what id take from your review is that its going to be alright. Id look elsewhere for a bit of a finer tuning on the details, but it would actually factor in my consideration to even start looking elsewhere. So it does its job and its a decent (if lacking in detail) review. 

2. Bern Helmet:  Immediate comparison with red and more importantly sizing of red helmets versus Bern. This alone means the review shouldnt receive a flag. Also a note that there are two versions of the same helmet. This is MASSIVELY informative to potential customers. No fluff, direct details and information you wont get ithe product discription. Definitely not a flag. 

3. 2008 Cartels: You dropped the ball on this one though. Again, you mention other products, but fail to really show a comparison. I cant also be confident enough to decide if the problems youre having with these bindings are because you havent set them up right or if the binding itself is problematic to set up. Okay details about lack of pressure points, but then immediately countered by "found myself riding on my toes" indicating that you havent really set them up well or your feet just arent fitting them great. Its too messy, i cant really work out whether you like them, whether the binding is causing you issues, or whether its just a poor setting up. Its also hard to know what you mean by phrases "riding on my toes" to be honest. Then theres the giveaway "it might have been HIS settings..." arent these your bindings? Im confused? finally, the last sentence mentions a THIRD binding but offers no grounds for the claim at all. Honestly, its a messy confused review. Id pull it. 

There you go, certainly you shouldnt have gotten a flag for the helmet, you probably shouldnt have got a flag from the k2 review, and you probably should have gotten a flag for the binding review. To improve just take the CONSTRUCTIVE feedback and look at the points ive given. If you want to review stuff or bring in other products, you need to directly compare them (and direct comparisons are GREAT, they really help any review). You cant just mention them. And if you are saying i prefer x to y, you need to say WHY you prefer x to y. Also padding is unnecessary. I could write a ten thousand word review on any product on this site but no one wants to read it. Stick to the facts. Keep it detailed. Add to the product information. Show you have some genuine experience using the product in the area it should be used. Hope this helps.

Experience:   After about 9 years of riding a Liquid Trip 60, just about anything would be a worthwhile upgrade. After reading reviews for hours and hours I decided on the K2 Raygun 156. I couldn't be happier with my choice. First run was at Winter Park, CO. Got on the board and everything felt so natural. Easy to turn, holds good at speed, it gave me a lot of confidence. Continued the day through some deep powder, some moguls, groomed, and ungroomed runs. It was great on everything. Never took it to a terrain park, but did hit some natural jumps and the board response was great.

Im fairly sure shell not only be banned, but also lose her coupons. Were this dual exploit allowed to stand (for there are two, but we always kept the second one super hush-hush :)), then the company is going to run out of goggles. :)

I found out a relatively faster way to flag brand reviews, FWIW.  Have two tabs open.  First tab has all the brand reviews listed for the offender.  Second tab you use for navigating through the website.  So if he/she has a bs brand review for Merrell... instead of having to find the brand in the various categories, I just type Merrell in the search bar.  I click on the first Merrell product that comes up.  At the top left of the page, you'll see:

I then click on "Merrell" just before the actual product and that brings me to the brand review page for Merrell.  Then you find her review and flag it.  It's still a bit cumbersome, but at least you don't have to hunt for brands through the brands tab.  I was able to flag a lot faster this way.

I PM'ed her to ask her why she would so it again after we already caught her the first time.  We'll see how she responds.

EDIT:  OMG, she's back up again to 400 points from brand reviews!  3 strikes and you're out, that deserves a ban from the community, in my opinion.

or just close the loophole of being able to still do BRs even after having 10/10 flags......

I look at it like this:

- Cops = all the full power mods (eg. gsrrr)

- Neighbourhood Watch = unofficial expert members (eg. ippo, derby)

- Hall Monitors = regulars (eg. ctoma, chillwill, fj5)

- Delinquents = bad regulars (eg. snowboardinrox357, snowflakez)

The dude has 4 identical sticker reviews (copy paste).  I "No"-ed and flagged them all, including the hoodie review.  I'm not going to touch the 2008 one since that was before the points and criteria were made.

I said that they were questionable.... but in all reality they are really quite poorly written!

the biggest problem though is that they dont contain any valid, useful info.

I also think that you'll have a fairly tough time getting them unflagged. 

PS. Im not trying to single you out, but no one gets sympathy for reviews. Either do them properly or dont bother.

I took a look at your reviews, even the one you brought up above.  As mentioned by ctoma and derby, read the thread regarding how to write proper product reviews.  Your spammed reviews as well as many of your currently rewarded reviews leave much to be desired.  1-2 liners are insufficient.  You need to describe in better detail your experiences and objective opinions about the product so that an uninformed shopper can make an educated decision before making the purchase.  

Take a look at Ippolite's reviews if you'd like some great examples:

I can't even see your posted reviews through your profile. But chances are your reviews are lacking useful information to help potential buyers, premature reviews. scroll back a page to look what some of the posts say about reviews.

Its curious you find splices have only an okay field of vision compared to crowbars. Each to their own. Of the two i picked up the splices precisely because they seemed like they had a bigger field of vision. i wont stress the point though because i havent ridden the crowbars, and ten minutes in a shop based on a flimsy memory tells you very little... :) 

The minus 1 star problem is the repetition of the phrase to any moderator looking through your list of reviews. They see the same phrasing and it impels you to look through to see just how much repetitive phrasing you can find. If you start seeing overly repeitive phrasing you might consider that the person reviewing it is phoning it in a bit, or worse, simply mixing their phrasing to garner points. Its not a flag in itself, but its circumstantial evidence building up to a flag/lock out. 

Heres a nuaghty secret... but genuinely we do really want to flag as many reviews as we possibly can. 

I know that sounds obverse to what you think, but reviews should only be carried out by people who can offer genuinely informed information on the product. Its not really a free for all like the forums. Youre basically doing a job for TruSnow and being paid with 5 points instead of one foryour time and trouble. So if you do a shitty job of it, we have zero hesitation to flag them. As i say then, its best when writing reviews to consider that. We're really looking for patterns of behaviour a lot of the time (continually throwing out 3 reviews then leaving every day, or repetition of stock phrases are good patterns... other patterns thti would take into consideration is padding nonsense, and type of items you choose to review - stomp pads are a great way to catch out points spammers im afraid for the very reason you listed... what can you really say about it? You can find super short reviews of them, and you can find reallllllly over the top long winded reviews of them. But you find people running to them for points precisely because they think they dont have to think about what they need to say on them. Its like shooting fish in a barrel for us just by the very action of trying to review one. Which of course sounds cyncial. There are good ways to review a stomp pad. It just needs to be informative, lack fluff, basically talk about its grip, display, its board stickiness, and ease of removal. You dont need to say too much, but you do need to say enough. Goldilocks. The fact that someone is reviewing them though is suspect and builds on the circumstantial profile thats being built in case of a duff review... :) 

I know i sound like a bureaucrat in these situations but i genuinely like the reviews section. I was very protective of it against the vagaries of the points system since i consider it a genuinely useful and helpful part of the site. If people use it for free points, it loses its legitimacy. Arguably it has long since gone way the hell beyond that line, but its nice if we can keep trying to encourage good reviews. So though i no longer trust a word that anyone writes in there, i live in hope that people may see its mutually beneficial to post good reviews over empty reviews for points. :) 

So yep, the considerations that go into flagging are complicated and arent just based on only whats written. To be sure, reviews are DEFINITELY flagged based on their own merit, but if its borderline, circumstantial evidence starts playing a bigger part in the decisions. Understand though, flags shouldnt really happen if the review is decent regardless (unless its copied from another site - as actually used to happen, or you've recopied the exact same post on a different year model for the same item). Circumstantial information only factors in if the review is kinda lame anyway. :) Hope this helps explain more than youd ever want to know about it :p

I'll admit I have some half ass reviews but the product only commands so much attention ie stomp pads, lol its a stomp pad it sticks. done.  I forget what I wrote for it, its been awhile as for how it'll go this season...I think i took it off my old board and stuck it on my new one, Seeing if it continued to stick., So far it STUCK! i'm surprised.

As for the splice and FOV I was comparing it to my Crowbars which is a very similar goggle. I was expecting more somehow. If i'm looking I could see the inner frame through my peripherals .

Id ask them to look at your malavita, dakine travel bag, and ruler boot reviews. Basically theres no doubt youve used them for their purpose based on what you wrote. The malavita is a decent review, the others okay, but way beyond the minimum. 

Borderline reviews might be the splice one and the stomp pad. Stomp pad reviews are generally bullshit to be honest. But i guess people need to know if it sticks. The problem with your review is that last line stating youll see how it goes this season - implying of course youve only really stuck it on your board and havent yet used it with snow. 

The splice one was okay, but needs just a little more comparison to other goggles when you make a claim like the field of vision is just okay. My splices seem pretty damn good to be honest. I also ride with EG2s which are great, and though the splices feel a bit smaller, the field of vision is still way beyond other goggle ive used prior to them (phenoms, targa 2s). So the Okay needs qualification - okay compared to what? 

So again, comparisons always help make the case a bit stronger and add detail to your review.

Beware of reviewing stuff though that you havent used in the place youre supposed to be using them. It might just be how you wrote (i dont think it is though), but the impression i got from a couple of your boot reviews was that you tried them on at a shop and reviewed them based on that. This is definitely the stuff of flagging. Also beware of using the same phrases ("4 stars, minus one point for..." and "they could pack out..." And beware of qualifiers like "could" in the phrase "could pack out", since they immediately tell the person reading that you dont actually know, which means you havent actually tested them anywhere near enough to comment on them.

for every 5 'minuses' it was supposed to automatically spam/flag the review.... but personally ive never seen it work quite like that.....

It takes 3 flag's from a regular member to spam a review, and only one from an expert/mod.  At least, I believe that's how it works.  So unless you were the third person to flag it, it would appear as if nothing happened.  The problem is if someone has a million reviews, and you aren't an expert, after the page refreshes you have to continuously keep scrolling down to find the one you left off at.

then you have all of the brands from which to click from.... but its easier to right-click and open each brand in a new tab to search for what/who you're looking for.

Its a MAAAAAAASSSSSIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVEEEEEEE  pain in the nuts. Still, i expected it to be worse than it was. Thankfully there is much less exploitation of it than i thought there would be.

I'm sure you may find the points you put up on your reviews to be valid, but what's funny is your view doesn't matter, what counts is what the mod thinks is valid or not.  With the system the way it is, you'll be hard press to find different perspectives on products.  i don't know who's responsible for marking spam so I can't point fingers and good luck with your endeavour.

Amazing as it sounds, but the season is around the corner so a lot of people will have a lot of questions and wont have a clue about forum protocol, points and whatever else. Can we just assume for the next few months that people are just 

a) excited about going snowboarding and will ask all kinds of questions that have been asked and answered 100 times already.

b) excited about the giveaways on the site and will want to talk about it.

c) excited that points lead to free shit and will want to try and game the system a bit. 

Most take a little bit of time to adjust to the way things happen around here and just assume its standard forum moderation. So can we let them find their feet a bit before driving them away from the site. 

This doesnt mean we cant still draw attention to things, or flag stuff or moderate the forums. But can we chill down on the personal attacks a bit. 

This site has one or two things going for it, and the main one is that its not (supposed to be) intimidating to new people. Its been an ethos of the site since day 1. I think this is a good thing and would love for it to continue. Can we save the ire for people who really deserve it?

I should stress before its maybe taken the wrong way, it doesnt mean youre reviews are BS, but three reviews in a row, no history indicating youd have extensive product history in the forums, and a fair amount of reviews does send up a few red flags to anyone casually perusing your profile. ;)

AFAIK its only admin/experts that can flag/spam.

I do recall for whatever reason, your old reviews were popping up on the newsfeed.  I do think there should be a statue of limitations on being flagged for stuff years ago.

But the one I wrote just last night was definitely truthful and legit... sigh , is someone out to get me?

Those were posted a long time ago.  I don't recall if the points system was even in place when they posted those reviews.  I typically let those slide.  

Yeah, truth be told i stay out of that one because i dont like flagging people for finding things funny. I know its a dumb rule to be honest, but what ends up happening is this:

One person says lol.

Five other people start complaining that they should post a picture or shtook off.

Those 6 people then get into a meta discussion crapping the thread.

Five more people start complaining that everyone should stfu and stop crapping the thread with meta bullshit.

The thread descends into a clusterfuck. 

The first few pages of the funny pictures thread have lots of conversations like this. Sorry you got flagged dude, but just think its for the greatest happiness. The funny pictures thread stays clean and tidy, and meta contributions are at a minimum so we can all enjoy the pics. :) 

For new people to the site its definitely the most controversial flag. But its pretty much an iron law.

I dunno, ive explained the mod policy plenty of times, its pretty consistent, but heres the gist again.

1. Post a funny picture in the funny pictures thread. I might as well add that you should DEFINITELY stay on topic in the other points receptacle threads. Since people do their five and out there, off topic stuff is often mercilessly shat on.

2. Standard moderation rules apply everywhere else - no threadcrapping, spamming, multiple posting, trolling (not really enforced to be truthful), necroing etc.

3. A note on spamming: Since points exist and since they give you free stuff out of the pocket of the people paying for it, then do try and understand they want their forums to be used in as legitimate a way as possible. Its not to say you cant fake your legitimacy,  but of course try and make some effort if you want to avoid the flag. 

Naturally, this is the big controversial one that people (to some extent rightly) feel annoyed by, but as i say, unlike a lot of other forums, you get free shit here just for writing posts and being signed in, so its reasonably fair to expect that the site is moderated to some extent to keep the people solely posting because they want the freebies kept in check a bit. (Particularly since they do drive people off the site and destroy plenty of conversation not only with their random posts that have nothing to do with the ongoing conversation in the thread, but also because when people call them out on it, it turns the thread and the conversation into yet another meta discussion on points and spamming). 

Thus, "legitimate contribution" is a thing on this site. But the threshold of what "legitimate contribution" means is really really low. It just means youre participating in the conversation and not just posting random shit for your 5 points. For me personally i wont flag you unless you have a history of doing it or its absolutely bullshit (such as making a post like "ihwikadhug"). For some other mods, the threshold might be a little tougher, but really ultimately its like this: dont crap, necro, and spam threads with bullshit. Try and at least stay on topic, and do try and contribute to an ongoing conversation and not just the thread title.

Basically what the site wants is people to come and chat about snow stuff and products. This creates a nice friendly happy climate that encourages people to visit and stay on the site. Which of course leads to purchases. In return, they give you free shit as a reward for keeping these forums alive and healthy to keep you creating nice engaging posts which brings in new users and keeps you here because the conversation is great and shtook me! youre getting rewarded for doing something youd be doing anyway! :) 

Unfortunately thats the ideal. 

What actually happens (more often than not), is that people pop into conversations, spam any shit killing conversations dead or leading to meta discussions and thread crapping which in turn leads to many of the regular users who are genuinely here just to talk about snowboarding and dont really care about points, feeling like theyre wasting their time participating in the general conversation. They then leave the site, which leads to fewer interesting threads being created, and LOTS more bullshit one word/sentence threads that have no actual conversation to them filling up the forums and the front page. 

The proliferation of these point receptacle threads means that new people who want to just chat about snowboarding see very little keeping them here so they head to other sites and participate on those forums instead. This just leaves a bunch of superficial bullshit threads in their wake and the spammers are shtooking delighted with that. 

I honestly feel sometimes we might as well shut down the forums and create one big thread with the title "what are you thinking about?"... but then i remember we have about ten threads in the board room which continually end up on the front page dropping all actual conversation off the first page with a variation on that theme... 

Its a massive cycle of shit to be honest. :)  

ETA: im often told that i shouldnt really give so much of a shit about it. But honestly, when i came to this site it was THE COMMUNITY that kept me posting here. The people on this site knew their shit, offered super quick and helpful advice and were also wickedly funny. This was a great place for beginners. It wasnt as steezy and scene intense like EL/BMB and it wasnt as dry and slow as snowboardingforum, but it had a place in teh scheme of things. It could go deep and interesting, but it also was super friendly, easy going, chatty, and ultimately a helpful place for first timers to really get their head around it all. So yeah, i remember that and kinda miss it.

But c'monnnn... any mod with common sense on any forum should know that should not be considered spam. spam usually means you're off topic. i'm not worried about 1 spam post, just the fact that it shouldn't even be considered spam to start off with. 

As for the flagged post. Its the funny pictures thread. Its pretty much the only thread on the forums where youre going to get flagged for not posting a picture. I dunno why, i didnt make up the rule. I dont even flag in it, but there you go.

Its not about quoting the picture, its about posting a new one im afraid. 

As for lame hall monitors. Swings and roundabouts. You see it from your side of teh fence, we see it from ours. Annoying as it is for you, i assure you its equally irritating for us. But thats what happens when a company wants at least some modicum of contribution to their forums and reviews section in return for giving you free shit. If they didnt give you free shit, a rather large swathe of posts and posters would disappear overnight.  Points bring activity. If they didnt, do you honestly think theyd keep the system going?... And with that activity comes spamming for points (which drives off legitimate contributors). 

So in order to strike a balance, they created the spam flag and gave us the task of looking after the forums and making actual judgements (ridiculous as it might sound), on deciding whether someone is making a legitimate contribution or whether they are just spamming for points and trying to game the system. I know it sounds insane, but then again, getting a free setup for doing nothing more than posting on a forum is pretty nuts too.  :) 

theres a great deal you can say about a pair of goggles. 

its probably in your interest to avoid reviewing until you can figure out how to say a bit more than "its pink" and "i can see through them" about a pair of goggles. :)

You cant flag brand reviews on the users profile, you have to actively go to the brand page, (a massive shtook around in itself), and the search through a reservoir of shit for a very shitty thing. 

Basically if i even so much as look at brand reviews i know im stuck there for the next three to four days flagging. 

We explained the flaw, we asked for it to be fixed. We then, upon request, flagged a TONNE of brand reviews while we waited for the fix (you might remember the people complaining at the time of being caught bang to rights 'but um... everyone else was doing it so its unfair to cut them completely out of the reviews for a little exploit'). 

A year or so later and the least we could expect is to have the very blatant loophole shut. In fact the least we can expect is that we can flag them on their user profile. Maybe they have and maybe the brand reviews no longer give points. I dunno. But im not wasting my time on them again. :) 

Actually, ill revise that. If they shut down the loophole, i will in fact flag every single brand review shorter than two sentences. Every single one. :D But until that day, i aint touching them.

Ippy, IMO spamming his posts is the best course of action, he has 9 Forum Posts marked as Spam, 11 more and he will not be able to "participate in that community activity".  I think some of the mods delete Spammer posts which does not increase their Spam count and allows them to keep coming back to shit on the forums.

Yeah Ipp we know, House killed the forums and allowed (or created) this fiesta of detritus and just doesn't want us to know about it, presumably because they receive a benefit from "legitimate" site traffic.  (Am I correct that their main effort at stopping spam has been to "hide" the forums by removing visible links???  Nice effort!) 

 

But there are still a few cool things on here, I think, FWIW . . . just no reason to get emotionally involved or expect anything other than, well, the usual fiesta of detritus.

Now, while much of what you said is conjecture on your part I would be willing to bet most of it (if not all) is spot on.  What the higher-ups need to realize is the forums and reviews are a place for someone new to the sport to ask questions, learn about gear, etc. which may lead to the purchase of gear.  I don't think anyone is asking for major mods to the site (which equals pouring money and resources into the web site), instead we need more policing of the forums to keep them relevant instead of becoming a wasteland for spammers which will drive people away from this site.  

IMO it seems there are many knowledgeable members who aren't around anymore but a quick check of EL shows they are still participating in snowboard forums, just not this one.  Why?  Have these forums become so stagnant that people are being driven away?  Has the lack of moderators and proliferation of bullshit threads, spam, etc. frustrated those members to the point where they do not even login?

There's so much more I want to say but my mind is foggy, it's too early on a Sunday morning.  I was up late last night (my niece turned 21) and was awakened by a work call this morning... something is getting lost between my mind and my fingers as I type this.

I think we should remember though that the people at st. pauls are doing their damndest to keep the site alive and working. But theres only so much they can do. I have a strong feeling (based on lets say, hearsay and conjecture), that although the forums were valued by the new owners, they were really just a way to keep their market within easily advertisable distance and never really seen as a core aspect of their business. :) 

I know this is de facto what the forums attached to a business are all about under the surface, but it seems like there was an implicit feeling that the groundwork was already done by sierra so they could just sit back and reap the cash. I think the general feeling was that although they understood the potential value of the forums on their business in terms of feelgood impact, they just never saw the return financially and so kinda let it carry on with things like the points programme, but didnt think it was a worthwhile investment to maintain or promote new forms of interaction with the community (nor to maintain the current ones like the review section). 

Doug and Donald were great and tried really hard to show the value of the community activities instigated by sierra, but the people above them just never seemed to buy it. Its a pity because this was arguably one of the best places for a new person to the sport to come and get decent advice. Even without the whole sierra pricing fiasco (or "glory days" for me as an international customer),  there was a great balance between overzealous idiots like me trying to advise people on what little actual experience we had, alongside older wiser hats like scorer, myke, bruizza, spenser, zoe et al. 

Alas once they left (most of them realistically sometime after the chapter 11 rumours) the spamming started getting out of control and honestly, we couldnt keep up. By around late season (probs march) 2011 it was evident there just wasnt enough hours in the day to deal with it. There were just too few of us logging in and looking after it, and as it piled up personally, not speaking for the others here, i just lost interest in trying to keep the reviews maintained as a viable resource. I wasnt being paid and it honestly felt so much like a second job that i got fed up with it. 

I really loved the reviews section to be honest,  i really thought that could have been such an excellent little treasure trove of rider experiences, but points turned it into a fiesta of detritus and i was genuinely annoyed by the selfishness of it all. Spam the forums, whatever, but i always felt the reviews section could have been a great help to the rather confused and bewildered people out there trying to figure out what snowboard they actually wanted. 

In addition, it was also a great way to advertise the business. 

It was the lack of vision (not from the sierra dudes who fought against this apathy by the way), to recognise that the top hits from certain key brands on google came from SIERRA precisely BECAUSE of reviews, that made me shake my head that they let it fall apart.

A few more moderators and the shit could have been cleaned up and gotten under control, but again, for reasons that i dont honestly know about (but can conjecture) it just wasnt a priority. 

I dont mean to step on toes of course, but i like a good tale. I reckon thats pretty much part of the story. The dudes at St Pauls need a bit of credit though since theyre kinda trying to deliver sierra product and sierra values but with the-house restrictions and core business practices. It was patently obvious rather quickly after the buyout that far from separating the two business and playing to the more community focus of sierra with TruSnow (whilst the house did its thing), the ultimate aim was really consolidation under a single programme. Again, i cat really say if thats a bad thing overall, but as far as the forums are concerned it really put paid to the whole community focus of sierra and i think thats probably why the forums have been in a tailspin for quite a while. 

Of course, this is best guess stuff. I should of course remind you im not an employee here. I have no idea what actually happened, and im notorious for getting carried away with ideas even if they have no factual basis in reality. :)

Well, that was a little depressing. No one's been added since the SS->TS move, right? It sounds like the recent moves are slowly whittling away at the forum, making it more of an accessory than a feature. I can understand it. TS and TO have no money (directly) to make from the forums.

Meanwhile, the forums are overrun spammers and whores consequently driving folks out and away from the forum and site. I can understand having less regulation in the off season, but  right now I see no regulation. No flags, bans.. 

Ill be clear, I'm not pointing fingers at the mods. I don't know if it's a volunteer system or paid... what ever. The apathy is with the company and the revolving door that's been transition of ownership. Did TS/TO know that there was an integrated, thriving forum linked to the sales site? Idk.

I didn't read your review, so I can't really say anything one way or another.  But I can say that if you half ass a review (or what someone else finds to be half ass), they'll flag you in a heartbeat.  I'm not saying it's a guaranty because I've seen some shit reviews not flagged.  And no one will first tell you, "hey dude, try harder"  they'll just flag yo ass. 

 

But simply, YES, people do troll the site.  As dtj said, for quality purposes.

In a way, yes.  Some TruOutdoors patrol officers (myself included) are merely using this thread to point out the obvious point w-h-o-r-e-s, the members who log in, post the maximum  5 meaningless messages for points and log out, all in 10-30 minutes.  Based on the lack of response from the offenders they are oblivious to it, ignorance is bliss I suppose.

alright derby i'm done with debating. just going to say my final piece.

@ letourneau41 apparently our abilities are beyond one another. i've grown up doing sports and activities my whole life: horse back riding, go kart, motocross, tennis, golf, basketball, kung-fu, karate and many more sports and yes i have trophies and medals and placks in most of these sports. I've even traveled to different countries to compete so our ability to feel for something and able to review it is probably on a whole different par.

@ctoma and if everyone followed every single point which you so dearly hold to no review that i've ever read qualifies for a quality review. I've read through many of the reviewers reviews in this particular thread. paying closer attention to those with expert member status or instructors or even batmanwest who likes to go hunting for criminals.

ODDMUT - I disagree that you should review a board that you have rode. I've demoed several boards but I don't think I've had enough experience on it to be able to give an accurate review. I just bought a K2 parkstar not to long ago and have about 6 days on it so far and I'm still getting a feel for how it preforms. I will write a review once I've got a great feel for it. i only review stuff i've used. my girl has stuff that's still on here that I have no reviewed cause i know nothing of it. and yes "my girls little bro has one" i have rode the board and so I can review it. straight off u're assuming a correct review should be dismissed. that just shows ur judgement is incorrect on that.

you sticking to your view on how my review is meaningless i guess we can say that per ppl who's been here for ages or has tons of post immediately has seniority so thus their view is immediately more senior regardless if a review is pure or even if another's view makes point. 

and points if u really break it down without reviews it'll take about 126 days roughly for me to get 1500 points. i'm in no rush and apparently writing reviews is considered meaningless to you even if it is as a persons interest to help someone else. why not look on amazon they don't get points for reviewing yet ppl take the time to review it and some of their reviews are shoddy. but the key point there is that it shows the the product is quality and it's worth something.

btw i did not collect the free t shirt nor am i antsy to collect it. there are other ways of retrieving that 15% or 18% or 20% discount even if my account is only 10%.

Most of your other reviews aren't too shabby but any review that starts with "my girls little bro has one" or "My cousin owns this vapor board" should be dismissed immediately.  Shit, I can write 30-40 reviews based on gear owned by my friends, in-laws, neighbors and wife's sister's former roommate's little brother's best friend.

Regarding the stone, using your words there is nothing to really review about a stone but I'll write a review anyhow.  Meaningless.

I see you joined a little over 6 months ago.  I was excited about being here and wrote shitty reviews, too, when I first started.  The points thing is mesmerizing... a few more posts plus a few more reviews and I can get a free T... more posts and more reviews and I can get free goggles... and so on.

sure there is 5 points but it also helps to confirm for others that that is all there is to it and they won't have to worry. i rather read reviews saying it's what it is and not no cheapy stone that will break if u squeeze it.

there is nothing to really review about a stone. even till now in my mind that's all it is. handy small and portable. and that's all and still do have to say about it.

i didn't know i review that twice but that works to remove it then but not report it as spam. i don't have to notify a difference between 09 and 12 if i'm reviewing. 

my understanding is that i should give as much info and my experience with the item in hand so others can get a heads up before buying it. and if what i have to say is relevant to them in whatever way possible that cheers and if not then sorry i couldn't assist you with my knowledge.

i got 2 reviews marked as spam. i can honestly see 1 of them being spam in someone's eyes but the burton tool review i wrote come on. honestly that is why i would buy that tool and that is what i use it for and so on. i'd like my reviews removed from spam.

you can look at my other reviews i'm not out there to create spam reviews. i'm sure 1 liners or stupid 1 phrase like "get this! this is so rad!" can be reviewed as spam.

i think my reviews that are marked as spam are not spam. I've definitely read reviews along the ones i've written to help me decide. yes i know how to write "detailed" reviews. look at all my other reviews.

Where are the tools to even edit your review if you feel like u've left out information? which i also find lacking.

I advise you to listen to batmanwest's advice.

Incidentally, legitimacy ( as used by many here to refer to ownership of the product) has no bearing on whether or not the review is USEFUL. 

Its usefulness is based upon whether you can take the ownership of said item and produce a DESCRIPTION of how you have found USING the product.

It is USEFUL if you can then offer information or a perspective outside of the information provided by both TruSnow and the product blurb. 

It is not useful if you tell your reader that you used it/owned it and it was fun/shit.

In the first instance (that you use or own it), i should bloody hope so. This fact barely squeeks you in the door onto the review page itself (exceptions in the case of someone who reviews snowgear for a living and can talk extensively about the item based on limited usage).

In the second instance (it was fun/shit?)... well thats the actual REVIEW itself youve just bypassed. Youve told me your conclusion, but you havent told me WHY it was fun or shit... which is (as im sure you understand) the actual REVIEW part of the reviewing.

if you want to avoid the flag, just write a review that offers your opinion but also WHY you hold that opinion. This potentially creates a useful review. 

To make it cast iron useful though, just write it directly aimed at you before you owned the product and what YOU would have liked to have known about it from the reviews before you whipped out your credit card and paid for it.

Hey jdude, just looked through your profile, and read your remaining reviews. To be honest, they more than likely would get a flag from me.

Here is why:

Your Burton Joystick Review:" I demoed this board a couple of days ago and really liked it. Its fun to butter around the slopes with it. It isn't quite as flexy as my burton hero but it is still fun to ride. My only problem is that I don't like riding switch as much on this board. Good board"

The entire review is just you saying that you like that board. There really isn't much actual info provided about the board. When I am explaining how flexy something is, I try not to compare it to another product, but rather a 1-10 scale. I have never ridden a hero, so I have no idea how flexy this board is, get what I'm saying man?
Why don't you like riding switch on this board? Is it really because the board is technically hard to ride switch, or are you not the strongest switch rider? Maybe a few more days on the hill with it you might actually get the feel of switch riding with this board, but you just demoed it.
That brings me to my next point of I personally don't think people should write reviews on a board they demoed for one day. A week, maybe, but you can only grab so much info about a product when you use it for only one day.

Your Burton Custom Binder review:" I have had these bindings for 2 years and they have served me well. When I got these bindings I had only been riding for 2 days. It is safe to say that I fell a lot when I started. I have been riding in the park and have taken some falls there too. These bindings are great for the price!"

The only info you provided is that you like them. As in literally, the only thing you talked about was that you liked them, you fell a lot when you first started riding, they served you well, and you have had them for 2 years. There isn't any info on how they worked for you, anything about the product at all.
Talk about the straps, how do they fit. What are the ratchets like? do they click down like they should, do they not work as well after a few months? Does the paint chip on them...so on and so on.

Your Burton Hero Review:" I Got this board 2 years ago when I was still a beginner. I think that some the reason I progressed so quickly was because of this board. When I first bought this board I had been snowboarding for 2 days. I fell a lot and had skidded turns. Now I can get into a deep carve. This board makes it easy to just butter around the mountain and have a lot of fun. I get a decent amount of pop off of my ollie with little effort. If you are a beginner, buy this board! If you are intermediate, buy this board! If you are an expert, buy this board!"

See my advise for the rest of your reviews. To much personal, not enough technical info.

On a side note, after trying to find your hero review, half of the reviews for that board need to be deleted. Holy crap!

i'm about to review another binding after i ride a few times as i just put it on my board. But by putting it on my board i'm already disappointed in the quality of it.
