I agree with blair for the most part. I have so many parents who "want their kids to ride with them" but that is so far away.

Focus on fun sliding on snow. To me that doesn't matter if it is skis or a board. When I take my son (now 4, and skiing) out ... when he says he's done, we get hot chocolate. doesn't matter if it is 10 minutes or 8 hours. As soon as it's not fun, we're done.

Teaching riding ... I start having real success depending on the child's athletic ability around 5-7. This is a factor of size, athletic ability, desire, and frankly, the parental/sibling attitude to the sport. don't discount these last two factors.

YOU set the tone with the fun.

in my experience younger children lack the muscular development and finer motor skills needed for snowboarding. They especially struggle with toeside, because there is not much development in the lower leg muscles. What generally happens is they build bad habits like a tendancy to stick on their heelside edge and bad basic stance. These habits can be hard to break down and can limit their progression as they get older.

Short answer:As long as they're having fun it doesn't matter what they do!!

Long answer:Start them on skis, they can develop concepts of edge awareness, turn shape and gain experience in the alpine environment, i.e using ski lifts, alpine weather etc. Start them on a snowboard around age 8 or 9. At this age their muscles are more developed to cope with snowboarding and with the on snow confidence a couple of years of skiing has provided they will excel on the board.

As soon as they've mastered walking, they're old enough to board. Maybe ski, but I'd give them a choice.

These were just taken a few minutes ago - apparently - my daughter (1.5yrs old) has taken a shine to the board. While I was on the computer earlier, my wife was calling me because she was trying to get the boots on and strap herself in.

So, what did I to do? What any normal parent would do... and yes... I was pulling her around on the towel strapped in. She didn't fall once, even when I let her hand go.

My son turns 4 this week. We just had his birthday party today.

For his birthday, "Mama and Dada" got him a Burton Chopper 100, Burton Grom FS bindings, and Burton Grom boots. Check my thread that I JUST posted out in the "Gear Talk" portion of the forums here.

Last winter, we just started out by getting a sled/toboggan and pulling him around on it while standing. This summer, we started to teach him how to skateboard. And on crappy days, we put a huge dry towel down on our laminate floors and pull him around while standing on it.

This winter.... he's going to strap in for the first time.

Our son has and almost unnatural balance and coordination for his age.

So, how young is too young? I think the answer is different for each kid. Specifically, their balance and coordination, and to a degree, their intelligence.

Just make sure it's fun, and when they're ready to pack it in - pack it in. You want each experience to end on a good note.

My daughters first time riding happened

when she was 2.5, last winter. I got her a Burton Chicklet 90,

Freestyle Juniors binders in XS, and Burton Motos in the smallest

size they make which was Toddlers 11. The boots are big

on her, she wore a 5 at the time, but it didnt matter much.

We just hiked up a mellow groomed run and rode down.

I would run next to hear. She just pointed it and when she

got going to fast she would just dig her frontside edge in and sit down.

This year I wanna get her on te beginner lifts. Future Olympic Gold Medalist.

My girlfriend's niece went up last season at a couple months into being four years old. The board was a bit big for her, but she ripped it up. She didn't care about falling and had a blast.

Her parents bought her a board for this coming season, and she sits at home in front of the TV strapped in, rocking back and forth. It's classic!

If you can find gear that's the correct size, then why not? If manufacturers are making boards/boots/bindings that size, someone out there is riding them, no? That said, in my experience working in shops and renting out gear, finding small ski equipment is usually a bit easier than snowboarding equipment.

One limitation might be gettng itty bitty gear for him...

I have heard both sides of the debate with kids, some say he should ski first, others say go boarding right away...

I did actually once hear about a concern with posture developement problems related to snowboarding at a too young age, but honestly have no idea how much truth is involved with that...

main point would be that he is having fun doing whatever he wants to...

So I've got a son who is a year and a half old....

When should I start him out on a snowboard?

Should he learn to ski first?

Any suggestions on how and when to get him started would be awesome.

Obviously this year is too soon, but I was thinking next year, when he's almost three. He's not afraid of heights, loves to climb, and I can't imagine anything more than if he likes it as much as I do, so that we could go together.
