I'm dying to try it myself, especially being African American. I know from my skating days how that sport does indeed take control.
Always wanted to get into way back when, but as already stated some of the main issues is "fear" I think. Most folks I speak to fear the fact they maybe "made fun of" not to mention injuries, and not having anyone else to ride with, (that's one of my hesitations)?
My biggest issues is trying to find just down right "cool" people to try the sport out with?
I get along with all colors not to mention I'm as "old school" as they get, age wise and every thing else.
But anyway, I would love to see more folks trying new things and sports that may not be considered, "common place" so much.

most of the black guys I've known over the years sight the cold as being most of the reason they don't want to do the winter sports thing.  Aside from the whole socio-economic aspect, and access to hills, etc. I think that's a lot of it.

Check that, I went on a MLK weekend to Blue Mountain about eight years ago. All black folks. I was THE only one snowboarding. About 150 African Americans for the trip and they all were skiing. Most were people I worked with. I was still kinda learning then as well. Much laughter ensued. The one time I actually saw a group of black people at Sugarloaf, they stopped me and my buddy so they could get pictures with us.  I have no idea why they were up there, but they had no gear.  We were like tourist attractions.  It was weird.

I am an African American snowboarder. I've only seen about four other black folks on the hills since I've been on a board. Most AA prefer skiing from my experience. My buddy Cedric who is black, is a hardcore skier. Well if you really want to be put in shock, there's a national AA ski/board organization that has a summit every other year at different resorts around the country. If you go, you'll see an entire mountain full of AA's, I've been to one and some of the other peoples reactions are pretty hilarious.

When I was out in Breck I was suprised of the amount of Latino riders. Most were skier but they were pretty legit hiting the big jump line and superpipe.

As for African Americans, at least locally, I have never seen a boarder or skier who is respectable in the Park. However for pros like Stevie Bell he is amazing.

Ever since I moved to Maryland I wanted to go skiing.  After the first time I skied, I wanted to snowboard.  Took me a few years and to realize all I had to do was travel 45mins to get there.  I love being my own person and not following the "crew" Wink.  I've had some friends say that for white people.  I tell them dont knock it till u try it.

Hahaha, between this and the asian can't drive thread, interesting thread has been popping up lately.

Riding in So Cal we are a little bit more diverse, but still it's kinda rare to see black people on the slope. I've seen a lot of mexicans and asians. Hey at least it's refreshing to see one on the mountain rather than us asians being called gapers all the whole damn time LOL

Kinda remind me of Carlos Mencia's joke about white people and their extreme sports.

And yes, little kids out there are crazy.  As soon as they learn how to stand up they'll bomb down the mountain at full speed.  No turns.  No fear.  Makes me a little depressed how quickly they pick stuff up.

As for black people snowboarding. I've seen them. I've seen other kinds of people snowboarding too. The ones that truly make me stop and stare are the 6-year-olds zooming down the mountain and doing tricks. The reason I stop and stare is because I am trying to get out of their way! Don't want to get run over. Little kids have no mercy!

i've met quite a few actually. yea, it's a rarity, but more and more of them are getting into it. and also, a majority of them don't like cold weather.

i've seen both skiers and snowboarders. also, i think people don't pay that much attention so they don't look for em.

HAHAHA i was about to post my boy jayx is black and rides hard.  Jay you beat me to it.  I grew up in the city and didn't really know about winter sports until high school and I'm asian.  I was never exposed to hockey or snowboarding/skiing.  It's the same reason why certain americans hate foreign cuisines.  If you're not exposed to it you just don't like it.  They're just missing out is all.

Actually I dont think its a racist question.  I think its a good one b/c its true.  I can accept some who IS ignorant or less educated about a culture, rather than someone who ACTS ignorant.  There's a big difference IMO.  Agreed with JayX, but see the one thing about us is that we will be quick to drop a couple thousand on some rims and music for a car, but wont think about using it for other recreation..lol.

I'm black and love the sport with a passion. I'm going to agree with Gigglinpig for the most part though. Most black youth or inner city youth in general don't have the opportunity to experience snowboarding. There's little exposure to it so the desire to get into it just isn't there. We all know how expensive it is to snowboard and many people who fall within lower socioeconomic status wouldn't dream of it. Ah...this thread hits home.  I've been 5 times last year and I've noticed about 10 of us MAX.  I might be being generous.  Most blacks grow up with the mentality that some sports are for "white" people.  I grew up in Miami and know that when I tell friends back home that I snowboarded..they think I'm crazy.  Yes, most blacks..especially from the south dont do cold weather either.  When I go, I stick out like a sore thumb, black guy, dreads...bright yellow Volcom suit.  I dont care who looks at me...I'm there to have fun.  All the lift operators chit chat with me when I ride back up and are cool with me.  One guy the second time I went was like, man you gettin alot better from last week.  I think they enjoy the diversity.  Too bad lots of blacks are closed minded about winter sports.  I'm just an athlete and want to do anything thats fun.  I get along with anyone of any race and it dont matter, my parents raised me that way.  The last time I went this year..I seen no other black person...and to top it off, I was riding solo....talk about a looooooooonely feelin..lmao.  I still had a blast, the lifty kept me company whenever I got back to the bottom..haha

I see quite a few at the resorts here in NM. Well, usually spot a couple a day. But I do have 2 African American friends that are better boarders than me ( my first season ), so they do snowboard. 

I guess it's just the culture you are brought up in, and for some people/cultures snowboarding is the last sport on your mind to try. For example, I am from South Asia, and when I moved over here 10 years ago snowboarding or anything related to snow was a turn-off. I wanted year long warm weather and water sports, but my friends finally got me to start going boarding this year, and I have been snowboarding more times this year than any of my friends.

Funny thread.  Got a few black buddies of mine that live in Chicago when I was in the States and throwing out being PC, a decent number of them don't like the cold and we'd always give sh!t to each other.  Had a few that tried it out, they liked it but opted the basketball court. LOL

ha, funny you should mention...I'm like the little old lady on that road (especially ever since I almost skidded off a cliff last year). 

I'm "that guy" that keeps his chains on a little longer than he should and, even without chains, I go relatively slow (get beeped at a lot, too).  My slower speed (and frequently letting people around me at the turnouts) definitely bumps up my commute time.

I put up close to 30 days last year with on average a 3.5 hours drive (and as much as 4+).  I don't think I put in more than two overnight trips last season either.

If you love it, you'll do what it takes. Trust me.

anyway, yeah, until you get introduced to it, snowboarding isn't the kind of thing you're going to seek out.  Once, you get it (hooked), you make the effort to get up the money to purse the sport...at least that's what happened with me

I've seen a few african americans at my home spot...but i'd say maybe four in the three years I've been going thereConfused.  One of the guys is local and rides solo and frequently, older guy (gray hair), skier.

Knowing gifted and shaka, they both love to ride and more importantlythey can both AFFORD to ride.  Sadly, that's probably not the case formany black Americans.  I don't think it's controversial to say thatpeople on the mountain are predominantly lower-middle-to-upper-classfolk.  Nor is it controversial to say there is a deep economic andeducational divide between the blacks as a whole versus the whites as awhole.

Part of it's also probably cultural and/or social.  Many of us get into snowboarding because friends got into it first.  If you don't have a friend to take you or get you into it, it's unlikely you'll go up on your own to try it out.

And, perhaps most importantly: you live in shtooking Indiana, one of the honkier states in the Union...
