HDPE is the stuff that the resorts use and it's relatively cheap too. Don't use plexyglass.

I've read that puck board works really well (the stuff hockey arena boards are made of) Not sure what the pricing on that is, but its supposed to slide well and be tough as nails.
 
If you make the frame out of wood, watch out for warping and rotting. Steel is better, but obviously a little harder to build. Post up some pics when its finished!

UHMW, strong easily obtainable (just search for industrial plastic suppliers in you area) and not crazy expensive.
