I loved the old Red Wings too. Yzerman will always be someone I'll look up to. Sergei Federov was my favorite player for a season or two as well. Lidstrom? Hull? Shanahan? So many old memories watching team.

Yeah I fully expect it to be a different story back in San Jose.  I like the Kings line change ups though.  Having a big hard nosed grinder like Clifford on Kopitar's line seemed to really change the dynamic and Brown played great on line 3 which sorely needed with the loss of Stoll. Be interesting to see if McLellan counters at all.

It's as if the Sharks "need" an excuse lol. How is it an excuse, when they are playing a higher seed (who are the defending Cup champions) with one of the best playoff goalies in recent memory, and are still in the series. Beats me. It is insanely tough to win a Stanley Cup, but the fact that the Sharks are perennial playoff contenders is great, even if they haven't made it to the Cup Finals yet. It'll make it that much sweeter whenever they finally do. Enjoy the bottom of the standings next season ;)

Yep, the Avs are golfing, fishing, etc.  But the Avs have won the Cup twice, how many Cups do the little fishies have?  Let's see, they can't seem to get past the Conference Finals - lost to Calgary, Chicago and Vancouver the 3 times they made it that far.  That's a team that can't finish, eh?

They were outshooting, outhitting, winning more faceoffs, and had more time in the offensive zone than the Kings in a majority of the periods. IIRC, they outshot the Kings in 7/9 periods to start the series. Quick is just playing incredible, there were a couple saves last night where I was screaming at my flatscreen.

Anyway, game is over. Bottomline, Sharks need to win Game 6 at home. 

Agreed, the only thing that matters is the W, but that WAS the first game that LA outplayed San Jose throughout the entire game. The previous 4, San Jose was easily the better team for the majority of the games but Quick is being a chuckledick and playing lights out.

Ya, that's kind of what I am thinking. Personally, I still feel that they blew the whistle early, but I'll take the lucky break, especially when the Kings have been getting them most of the series.

Either way, either team shouldn't bitch or moan about the refs. If you're a good enough team, you don't let the refs decide the outcome on a call, you win the game regardless. Calls have gone both ways in the series.

Riiiiight. Sharks should've taken Game 2, and the only reason the Sharks aren't at least up 3-1 in the series is because Quick is playing out of his mind (yet again). 

If the Sharks can keep the momentum up and not have a let down after Game 4, they'll take tomorrow's game and finish the series off at The Tank on Sunday.

I'm pretty sure the reason for that was to protect Niemi... Remember the penalty that was called on the Kings when their player slammed into him. A penalty was called of course but I'm sure that the ref's were told to try and make sure that didn't happen again (avoid hurting goalies). 

thus... quick whistle as soon as the ref lost sight of the puck when players are charging the net.

Not saying the Sharks didn't deserve to win...they played great but to say they would not have come back is hard to say.  The game ended 2-1 so...

Third period shots went 14-2 in Kings favor.

I predicted 3-2 wins by Boston and San Jose, both teams won 2-1.  I'm getting better at this.

Yeah that was a terrible call! But even had the goal been allowed I don't know if the kings would've come back. It would've given them some life but the sharks outplayed the kings in all aspects. Face offs won, hits, blocked shots, etc. Sharks really earned that win.

Oh and what a ridiculously quick whistle and horrible call on that goal they disallowed. Niemi never even came close to having that puck, why the ref blew it I have no idea.

Boston pounded NYR 5-2.  Lundqvist gives up 5 goals in a playoff game - last time it happened was 2009 (5 goals in a playoff game).

What i'm pissed off about is the $100,000 fine that the sharks GM got for his comment on Torres' suspension. It's ridiculous they fine you for speaking your mind/truth/opinion. and then change the rules so that they can fine you 4x the amount they're supposed to even be able to do so in the first place...

Shame on the NHL for this...

Ottawa is putting up a fight, down 4-3 with just over 4 minutes left in the game.

I would like that, if the sharks can pull off an advance to Rd 3 that would be amazing.... they do have a hell of a lot of work to go to complete that. 

I feel like it is tougher to predict scores in Hockey than in football.  I mean, you are never exactly right in football, but I feel hockey scores are less consistent.

I think the Sharks are going to come back and win the series.

Yeah I doubt that would happen. Sharks are a perennial 2nd round losers. Kings have caught fire once again. I have a feeling this series will be over quick.

 

The game was close until the 3rd, then the Red Wings just fell apart. The Blackhawks just had too many shots on goal...

Agreed except the part where you state the Sharks dominated the last 10 minutes.  Kings were up two goals and obviously are not going to try and score... you would expect that last ten minutes to go that way. Although do credit the Sharks for putting the pressure on.  This feels like a must win for the Sharks. If they go 2 down they will have to be the Kings 4 out of 5 games which seems highly unlikely.

That's a tough one to call as it's still kinda early. Several teams riding huge momentum waves right now. Detroit, Boston, LA and even the Rangers are all playing well. Pens needed 6 games to knock off the Isles. So it wouldn't surprise me if it came down to two other teams in the cup finals.

Sharks will have to put a lot more traffic in front of him to get goals. 

They didn't put enough pressure in front of him.... and he was spectacular. 

Otherwise, both teams played well... Sharks dominated 10 mins of the 1st and the last period. 

Some good things to take away from this series is that the Leafs are able to comeback just when you think they're down and out. This team has a lot of heart. They'll be back in the playoffs 9 years from now kicking some ass! LOL But seriously, they'll be tough to beat against any team. Kudos to Brian Burke for putting together a solid squad. It's been a very long time since I've last felt the buzz in this city.

The Kings have definitely beat the best team of the forgottens so far this post season.  St. Louis was one of the hottest teams in the NHL heading into the playoffs and Detroit definitely wasn't.  Anaheim should have not let this go to 7.

Hope the Leafs can stay alive tonight and force a game 7.

No kidding! First time TO has seen playoff hockey in 9 years. That's a massive achievement even for a shortened season. Reimer is a total hit or miss kind of goalie. A shutout one night, then gives up 4 or 5 goals the next. I'd love to see the Buds get past the first round, but the way they've played thus far, it doesn't inspire much confidence to make me think otherwise.

It's a good thing then that my Leafs are on the 1-goal game days and not the blowouts. Then again, when it comes to the Leafs anything is possible.

Lucky for you that you do not have to be disgusted, Zetterberg nets the winner at 1:04 of the OT.

My guess it that it ends in 4.  Sharks caught a break playing Vancouver instead of St Louis who is the better club right now.  Kings would have been served losing to the Sharks in the last game of the series and getting the 6th seed.  Although if the Kings take care of business then they end up playing Anaheim if they win or the Sharks if Detroit wins which means either way they avoid Blackhawks in round two and they would have home ice against Sharks.  That was a mouthful but bottom line just take care of St Louis and things take card of themselves.  Anaheim against Kings in round two would be awesome.

Luongo was the only thing keeping the game tight for Vancouver.

I understand your thinking if it's 1 on 1. But if it's a repeated 5 on 5 fights, the game has gotten out of control and they need to try and put a stop to it and calm things down before someone gets hurt.

They're saying that his head was the principle point of contact and that his route into the hit was not correct, (not enough body contact)

so basically.... not malicious but poorly aimed. 

I see where you're coming from cuz I'm sure we've all been seeing the same view that they play over and over on the highlights. Is it the view from the d-man passing?... basically, where Eller is heading up ice? Cuz that one DEF looks like a head hunting shot. But they played it from another angle, behind Gryba, and it clearly showed Gryba's shoulder contacting Eller's chest first only to follow it through and catch his chin. It wasn't totally flush cuz Gryba pretty much aimed for the right shoulder/chest area which spun him around. The severity increased when he hit the ice and smacked his head. I guess that's where it got bloody. But I still feel that it was a clean hit. The league has made quite a lot of rule changes to protect the players and their heads. Some times it falls on the player to protect themselves.

The Blues are looking good, I don't think people give them enough credit.  Only 5 teams in the NHL had more regular season points than St. Louis.  If Elliot keeps up his strong play in net I can see the Blues going deep into the playoffs.

Anderson (Ottawa's goalie) had a great game, stopping 48 of 50 shots, .960 SV%.

I love playoff hockey.

Bruins' Ference got a 1 game suspension for throwing a forearm at Maple Leaf Grabovski's head.

Washington is putting it to the Rangers right now, 3-1 late in the 3rd period.

I foresee a multi-game suspension for that nasty hit. 

Yeah me too. I think the will come out strong.  They are a tough club mentally.

Teams will make adjustments and that SHOULD (in theory) make things more even (and entertaining). 

It's weird to see teams playing their 1st game while others are going on their 2nd....

Hopefully they come out prepared in game 2. 

he is very bad with the puck...the most brutal thing was they just started a 4 minute power play.  There was no reason for him to even handle the puck.

Very entertaining to watch and the Sharks have taken the home ice advantage.

MS is a terrible incurable disease that attacks the nervous system, I have witnessed first-hand the devastation it causes.

Just saw the highlights to the game. Yeah that's a tough one to swallow. Gift wrapped a short-handed overtime winner. Then again, it doesn't surprise me since he's one of the worst puck handling tenders in the game. Didn't he pull something like that in one of the games of last years cup finals?

 

Jonathan Quick has to be beating himself up for holding on to the puck behind the net that long and allowing that easy goal in OT. Conn Smythe or not, that was bone-headed.

But there were several other rule changes made that changed the game to make it his way.

If that rule was still in use today that hawks goal couldn't have been setup the way it did...

I think the goal was beautiful (hawks game winner) but I do think the forewards were way too high just looking for their defense to chip the puck out for a breakaway.

The playoff teams are set in the East, just a matter of finishing the seeding.

Detroit, Minnesota and Columbus are battling for the last 2 spots in the West.  I would not want to be the #8 seed and face Chicago in the first round.

Also a Habs loss bumped them down to 4th and could be a potential first rd matchup.

With 6-8 games remaining for each team it's going to be a crazy scramble to see who makes the playoffs.

I'm more confused as to how Ryan Clowe is the next best player on the trade block. The guy has zero goals! Guess it depends on what teams are looking for.

Teemu, at age 42, is just amazing - a pure goalscorer (I still remember his rookie season with the Jets, 76 G with 56 A - amazing).  Currently at #11 on the all-time Goals list.

I'm not a habs fan but them being one of the top teams in the East shouldn't come as a surprise really. They did have a terrible year last year, but before that, they were in a game 7 with the B's just 1 goal away from moving onto the cup finals. Not much has really changed with that team. Its just more of a shock that they're up there with Pitts cuz they don't have the star power.

As for the west, it's gonna be tight as to which team moves on. Every game is gonna be huge from this point on even if it means going to OT and getting that 1 pt.

With 11-13 games left for each team this could shape up to be wild finish for a playoff spot.  Only 6 points separates the 15th place team from 8th place (and final playoff spot) in the West, 8 points separates 15th from 8th in the East.

Florida's -35 goal differential is horrendous... I guess that's what you get when you have Clemmensen (2-3-2, .852 SV%, 4.28 GAA) and Markstrom (1-5-1, .891 SV%, 3.29 GAA) in net and a mostly no-name defense.

Chicago has 41 points in 22 games, the closest teams (in terms of points) are Montreal and Anaheim, both with 32 points.

Ok, that is true but still a pretty amazing run that they have going.

Had no clue. Then what I was referring to was they broke the record for consecutive games with a point to start the season. 

Ok, looked into it a lil bit. Flyers do hold longest winning streak. But it wasn't to start off the season. They lost their second game to Atlanta then started that streak. 

 

What I don't get about the realignment is why the 2 FL teams are grouped with the Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, etc. division. They should just move the 2 NYC teams up and group everything south of that together. They should also bump Columbus to the Central division to make the 2 conferences have even number of teams.

I'm hoping the proposed league re-alignment is real and not just someone blowing smoke up our arses.  Detroit playing in the Western Conference has always been a mystery to me.  Although I would miss the games against Chicago, San Jose and St. Louis but I would not miss games against Columbus, Phoeniz and Minnesota.

I think it is good for them that it is a shortened season...so they might not have to worry about peaking too early.

On a side note, still very impressed with the Hawks and their unbeaten run thus far. Absolutely cruising right now at 15-0-3 to start a shortened season. Waiting to see if and which team will be the first to knock them from cloud 9.

The Bruins sure are rolling along, they never give up and you can see it in that game with the rangers on Tuesday.  You don't often see two goals scored with your goalie pulled.

Also hate to be a cbj fan right now. That club is a mess.

Anyways, watching the Hawks about to pick up another W against the Preds. 3 mins away from a shut out. Loving how we have been playing so far. Definitely looks like the team that won the Cup years back. Really nice to see Kane doing work again after a slumping previous season.

He is gone for 3 games bc of that right? but pretty shocking when you can be suspended for 3 games for a hit and they didn't even call it on the ice. 

The sharks get some good playoff experience every year it seems like it but still lose. But this is there year. They will follow the bay area, GO 49ers! 

But what is shocking is the kings, it isn't looking like they will make the playoffs this year unless they change something fast.

Definitely a bad call, looked like a clean hit although I wouldn't call it a love tap.  The penalty also resulted in Datsyuk's go ahead power play goal.

Z had a great night, 3 goals and 2 assists.  He battled Oshie on a loose puck sliding towards the empty net to get the hat trick (see it here:  http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-three-stars-henrik-zetterberg-5-point-night-061458811--nhl.html).  It was a great physical game.  Although I'm a Wings fan I respect the Blues, they have a great mix of young guys and a few veterans.  Tarasenko is on fire.

maybe they just weren't built to win in the playoffs?  The Kings were a defense oriented team which plays out better in playoffs in my opinion.  They are not scoring a lot again to start this season but I wouldn't want to play this team come playoffs.

With this shortened season I'm anxious to see how their stamina holds up into the Playoffs....

Well they wouldn't have to offer Shea Weber kind of money (which they have), and he's just the kind of punk that would fit so well with Philly. 

I dont really think so...the seasons are too long anyways.  I wish all the seasons were shorter that way the regular season games would be heightened and there would be less chance for injury before playoffs.  

Yeah, it's too bad we won't get to see the typical Leafs January/Feb debacle of the ages.  Three years ago they were something like 5-0 to start the season and all of my Leafs fan friends were planning the parade.  WHOOPS, thanks for Tyler Seguin was the result of that year.

Phil Kessel is incredible, he's the only 40 goal scorer in history to never have scored 40 goals. 

I think a couple of solid veterans on a team could really do wonders for this shortened season, keep the younger guys focused.  A bad streak this season will wreck any chances of a team making it to the playoffs.  It will be interesting to see the contrast between the guys that have been playing really high level hockey (Swiss, KHL, Spengler Cup) and the guys who have been playing shinny for the last 6 months .

I'm just glad a few of my Bruin players have been in column A (Seguin, Bergeron, Seidenberg).  Playing with Spezza, Duchene and Tavares isn't bad practice either (and against Pat Kane and Thornton).  If you guys missed it, some of the best hockey I've seen in a long time was played in this year's Spengler.  Normally team of nobodies, this year was fantastic, with a ton of top end NHL talent on display.
