I got an idea. Is there a way you can setup a referral system? Lets say I tell people about your site and they sign up. You should make a place in the registration form for a member's referral name to be entered. So many referrals by a member doesn't win you anything(because people will just sign themselves up 100 times as different names) but if the new signees you refer also buy from your site, then the referrer gets something. Maybe the top referrer in new signee sales at the end of the month gets a Twin.

I think you guys are on to something.  We have been brainstorming about ways we could do something like that, but it seems almost impossible to eliminate the posibilities of someone doing exactly what nunu and damian said.  If we can come up with something that would actually work, we'll do it.  Keep the ideas coming!!!  Mabe the person who actually comes up with a fool proof way to reward the person with the most referals should win the  board?!

Revision 1
Lets say you get someone to sign up. They use your name as a referral. Nothing happens until that person spends 300+ dollars on a single transaction. Once that happens you get that posted to your account or in a database. After a month the person that brought the most revenue to sierra gets a twin.
300 is a steep price and if someone wants to make a false account then I see them using it once like that. You could even make the minimum referral buys 2 that way it is 600, an even steeper price for someone to cheat at. I think though that there will always be loop-holes.

Addresses are good too. Some people might get smart and send them to a friends house or even sign a friend up unknowingly. We did that a lot at work. We would sign up friends for stupid magazine subscriptions like pig international. One of my friends still gets that one.

you don't even need a referral system... i sent an email to sierra earlier this week about different ways to promote their site and one of them was having a rewards system... for every dollar u spend, you accrue points which can be applied to free swag. no cheating in that and it will also prevent ppl from making double accounts because then they can't get the higher-level point items

Nu Nu I am working on a rewards system for active members and shoppers.

Brejifus way to get the ball rolling,  I have once again stolen your idea and modified it.

This is an ongoing membership drive.  Any member who gets 10 new members to join, form a group to keep track, each new member must achieve 10 post, mysierra pimped out and then the whole group gets our 15/15 Discount card mailed to them along with 10 stickers each.

The discount card has a promotion code that allows you to recieve 15% off online unlimited use on any 2007 Gear* Certain brands excluded good until 12/31/06.

Plus, the member who recruits the Ten people will recieve a Free Sierra Tshirt along with their Discount card and stickers.

I know that there are holes in any system, and I can already think of a few ways to that this could go wrong.  But, I think that we should go for it.

I would like to have a VIP group for active members. I dont know what the requirements should be but make it so that its a select few only. One benefit would be that they would get access to 06/07 gear for 50% off one week before everyone else at the end of the season.

i plan on going broke at the end of the season.

i know you can order stuff and select instore pick up. some would do this so they can use the discounts but not all your gear are online. maybe you can make a VIP card for those who goes into the store and get 10% off their gear.

Good ideas for the reward system, on the one week early for select members.  Also, we are working on getting everthing that we have in store on the site for our 2 year.  Soon there will be a seemless shopping experience.  We are also working on some new shopping tools that allow you to shop by size, which will be ideal when we are on sale, but that is for March 2007.

Steve Jobs would appreciate this.

I think we should also do somthing like...
" what would you do for a twin retro" and have people send photos or videos of them doing stupid dog pile.... Like eating a dozen hard boiled eggs Cool Hand Luke style.

Or post something like "first one to call at 2:03 wins the twin".

...It would work.

How about with the referral system, if you refer someone and they spend over $300, instead of giving out a board to one of the people who generates the most $ for sierra, just give the person a discount on a single item. The more the person they referred spends, the bigger discount they get. Like if the person spends $300, give the member 20%, 400 25%, 500 30% or something. That way more people can get in on it and ya'll will still be selling stuff.

- Affiliate program is in the works to integrate.  There's two parts to track to extend bonuses to users:
1) Tracking how many people you get to join the community.
2) Track if that person buys something online.

3) WE NEED YOUR HELP/IDEAS immediatly with the following:
- to search organically with the engines we need every and anything linking to http://www.sierrasnowboard.com

what's been done:
- mysierra: we have the code to link up a "check out my snowboard profile" graphic to put on your myspace...
- vendor sites are linking to us.
- we need serious action on this...what are your ideas, what have you done to put the wheel in motion...what incentives can we give...any seo's out there...let's get cracken...

referral system is a good idea. i have referred this to other action sports sites before. base it on a combination of different email address and different IP address. that should solve the issue of someone signing in as themselves. X points for a referral. each point = a certain about of Sierra bucks. yada yada yada.

go viral Air-ik. go viral.

ride's tattoo party is always a blast, but that seems a bit extreme.

create some text that is added to the bottom of people's email addresses like a signature to spread the word.

myspace bulletins. (yawn, pretty standard)

blogging. blogging baby. it's the newest thing. mysierra should have blogging.

expand on the groups section. it is sorely neglected. some points or something for the best group forum.

i'll keep thinking and pm you later air-ik.

the next contest idea should be either:

1. the best spot for a sierra sticker photographed

OR

2. best/most original photo of someone in their full gear: snowboard, boots, outerwear, hat/helmet, googles, helmet (some of the surf mags have done this before with hilarious results). be creative. work, subway, etc.

Well let me first admit I read about 5 posts before skimming to the bottom and hitting reply, sue me.

As far as the referral system, who cares if the people they are referring are themselves.  So long as they're not returning the merchandise or using a stolen credit card to order it, sierrasnowboard is still making revenue so they should reward the referrer with something (read: crap that isn't selling anyway.)

Instead of counting the referrals on a user basis, count it by how many dollars the people they refer spend.  Then you eliminate any problem you had of people creating numerous accounts for the sake of referrals.
