In the time between the end of my current job and starting grad school, I'm seriously considering moving to Australia or New Zealand next summer (winter in the southern hemisphere) and working at a snowboard resort.  I'm in the early planning stages at this point, but wanted any feedback from our Aussie contingent.

So far, I'm looking at Perisher Blue and Thredbo as my top choices in Australia, and Treble Cone and Wanaka in New Zealand.

More specifically, what places are good and which are bad?  Which places have legit terrain and snowfall?  Also, if you know of any resort's reputation for employee treatment, that would be great to hear as well.

Has anybody from the states been down under to ski/ride?  How do the resorts I've mentioned compare to Tahoe resorts?  All comments are welcome.

ok i m an aussie but havent ever been to the snow in the states so i wouldnt be able to compare.
From what i think i know :D: Aussie resorts are a lot smaller than the states and we get a fair bit less snow so not as much pow and more groomers which can get icy.

Also with the perisher thing, my cousin worked in the snow last season in australia, he ended up getting a job offer at both perisher and falls creek (he chose falls)
1. falls is much cheaper to live and also you can live on the mountain. I think perisher is much more spaced out, David mullaine will be able to fill you in on the NSW resorts i can only tell you about the Victorian ones.
Falls i think has the best free ride terrain park in aus.
And my cousin said the employee treatment was great and its anexcellend atmosphere

What sort of job are you looking at? Liftie, instructor, food and hospitality?
Most of the shit i have said will probably be corrected.

I know South America is better but a friend of mine really wants to go to Australia with me, so I figure its a good compromise.  Plus, I dont really know Spanish.  Thanks for the info Sambo!

Yeah the Australian resorts are pretty rectile compared to America. I have been to Italy, France and Japan riding and they are massive by comparision.

The variations between Perisher Blue and Thredbo are as follows;
Perisher has the biggest area in Australia.
Thredbo has the most vertical and the longest run.
Perisher has a better consistency, with a longer lasting base as it is higher in alt.
Thredbo has a village, Perisher does not
Perisher has 50 lifts, Thredbo has 11 but they are long bastard which also cause congestion.
Thredbo has a better snowfall usually, but is always crowded.
Perisher has a good area, with the possibility to escape the crowd.

Ask me for more info if you need it.
