    Posted: Jan/26/2008 at 7:07pm
I got a grad school interview at CU Boulder in late February, and am planning to stick around a few days afterwards to ride.  My interview is Friday Feb 29.  I can probably ride the following Saturday through Tuesday-ish.

A few questions.

1.  Where should I go?  Ill probably either rent a car or if its relatively cheap, Ill do some shuttle service from Denver.  I'd like to go to the nearest place to Denver/Boulder that is worth my while.  My initial thoughts are either Keystone, Breck, or Winter Park.  For the CO folks, where would you go if you only had a few days.  I'm used to riding Kirkwood and Sugar Bowl around Tahoe.

2.  Whats the best/cheapest/least hassle way to ride for a few days?  Should I stay in Denver and drive back and forth, or just stay on a mountain for a few days?  If I do stay in Denver, are there a reputable shuttle service options?

3.  Anybody gonna be riding on these days?  Itd be cool to meet up with people if they'll be around, and it'd be even cooler if somebody wanted to show me around.

Thanks in advance for the advice

Hey Andrew, I am a California transplant living in the Denver area.  Let's see if I can answer a few of these for you.

1. Rent a car.  Shuttle sevice is expensive and you won't save that much vs renting a car.  You can even just rent a car for a day.  I have friend who does that when she needs a car.  You also won't need anything fancy.  A front wheel drive vehicle will do the job.  Chain laws are not much of a factor in Colorado.  In fact, I have never had to put chains on a vehicle here.

As far as Tahoe like resorts.  In the front range, only Slapahoe basin comes to mind as being similar to Kirkwood/Sugar Bowl.  The riding is a bit different out here.  The powder is super light and dry, but it also means it doesn't stick as well to the super steep stuff.  Tree riding is key, and you can find some good cliff jumps and such.  It takes a little local knowledge and time to figure out.  If you are expecting and want Cali style, I think you are going to find it lacking.  If you are looking for something different then you'll probably have a blast.

Winterpark and Loveland would be the other places I would recommend you checking out.  The cirque area at Winterpark can be a riot.  Lot's of steeps, cliffs, and mushroom patches back there.  It's also about a 30 minute hike out but worth it imo.

2.  March is spring break.  So resort area hotels/motels will probably be at a higher rate.  You might check out motels in Idaho Springs.  That will put you about 30 mintues away from most resorts and there are plenty of places to eat/hang out in the springs.

3.  I may be around then.  My preference is backcountry, but I do have a winterpark/copper pass and know both resorts very well.  If it works out, I can get you a cheap lift ticket on my pass and show you around one of those resorts.  Hopefully it's a powder day.  March is typically the snowiest month in Colorado so maybe you'll get to nail one.  I've got a couple of trips planned that may happen around then.  I'll know more when your dates get closer.

Kill--  Thanks so much for the info.  I'm not looking for a Tahoe type resort, I was just mentioning the terrain I'm used to.  I think I'm gonna look into some sort of cheap hotel or hostel in Silverthorne, if thats possible.  I'd be interested in riding with you, if your plans coincide with mine.  I guess I;ll keep you or this thread posted with how my plans develop.  Thanks again!

Send me a message a week out or so from your trip.  I should know if I'll be in town then or not.  The only real trip I have planned is down to ride the backcountry on Wolf Creek Pass at the moment.  That will probably happen before your trip.  Utah and Wyoming trips are always possible, but as of right now I have no plans to visit either during that part of the season.

Update:

Looks like I'll be riding Loveland next Saturday (3-1), Keystone on Sunday, and Loveland again Monday.  If anyone will be riding there, let me know and we can try to meet up.

Ya definately.  I really wanted to ride with you guys when you were here but I had a different grad school interview.  Sounds like a plan to meet up.

Nice i'll be riding Keystone as well on Sunday, gonna bring down a couple NS's for a friend to ride for the day.  Always good to leave Steamboat to ride other mountains is my excuse.

Loveland is a fun mountain, just hope it's not a windy day since your above tree line for the good terrain.
