I'm not a photographer, for sure. I just have a cheap Kodak digital camera (with a flash option, neat, huh?). Just want to show some pictures, all within a three week period. Every one of these. From the bird in the air, to the bike on the street, the to board at the mountain. The man of many lifestyles.

I like the film too, but you can get a similar feel by shooting with a high ISO and shooting underexposed and then lightening them. grain is also very easy to add.
but if you can do it with film - who wants to waste time photoshoping... although you dont have to pay to get them exposed ![]() |

i still touch up my film photos too. when they come out right i dont have to, but these last two or three rolls have been really weird and i havent done anything different, so..... i dunno.
im working on getting at least a decent dslr though, and of course ill shoot with keeping that film-like feel in mind. |

oh, and zoe.. i changed my ISO setting on my camera to HI auto. ive always just had it on regular auto, cause its a super basic point and shoot so i dont really think about setting it up for each individual shot, cause i dont get that serious with it... i never thought about messing with the ISO settings though, and the higher auto one already gives it a slightly better feel (in my opinion anyway). so thats good news for now, i guess.
unfortunately im not making as much money as i used to be, because im working less, and i need to move before next winter, and im probably going to school this fall finally, and there are other things i need to take care of first before getting a camera. so ill probably just have to wait till we get our PFDs this fall.. at least ill have it by winter, i hope. and who knows how much the d90 price will go down.. technology is updated so quickly. |

So you shoot film too Spenser?
I used (and still use) a Canon Rebel G for all my film stuff, then I got my Canon Rebel T1i. I still need to build myself a darkroom though. Used the one at my school A LOT before I graduated. Have around 12 B&W rolls I want to get printed out sitting somewhere though. Need to get some money to get them printed and copied on a disc somewhere. I've copied a few here and there though: ![]() Shot on Infrared film. Need to find more of it... I love the contrast that comes from it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

when i actually do "real" shots i use film, yeah. ive got a pentax ME super with a wide angle lens and a 70-210 zoom, and a 2x teleconverter. it was my parents. they were around from around 1980-84 or something, so its got a fair amount of years on it, but its still in great condition and usually works great. i read that it was pretty good for its time cause it has an auto setting... which really only does shutter speed, but whatever.. haha.
i just love the feel of film. even if you simply take a picture of something random, it still looks radical. but really, a lot of the feel comes from the depth of field you can get, with the specific focusing and all... and you can do that with a DSLR too. but its still not quite the same. |

. I believe the ISO is supposed to match the 'film quality' I think it says on the film package what quality the film is - and thus what setting you're supposed to shoot at. It doesn't really make sense how it translates to digital since you don't have film, hmmm. BUT i don't shoot with film so I could be WAY off on that - thats just what my understanding of ISO.Where are you moving to? hah I wouldnt hold my breath for camera prices to drop. body prices might drop slightly, but if/when it goes on 'sale' it's worth a laugh (it's hardly a sale)... whatever you can find a lens at now, is as low as it's probably going to get. The only other way to get a deal on new gear is to buy a lot at once and have them drop the price (like a package deal). OR buy used/refurbished... I personally prefer to shtook up my own gear rather than who knows what someone's done to it. But its a good way to go if you're short on dollars. glad the ISO is working out, let's see some more shennanigans

im not leaving juneau, just moving to a different house, or whatever living establishment.
iso is just film speed, how sensetive it is.. like a 200 iso is going to need a longer exposure to get the same light as 400. and higher iso usually ends up with more grain. most normal film that youll find in a regular store is 400, and theres usually 200 there too, from what ive seen. ive always used 400 in my camera, and its a better "normal" all-around film speed for pretty much anything.. low light, sunlight, action, etc. normally a film camera has ISO settings that you adjust to match the ISO of the film youre using at the time. so if i put 400 in, i put the thing on my camera to 400.. and if i bought 200, i would change it to 200. im pretty sure its so the cameras light meter/etc knows whats going on, so it knows how to read the light and tell you if youre over/under exposed.. something like that. with digital, i guess its simulated obviously, but i played with it. my camera has manual ISO settings from 80 to 1600 i think, and then auto and high auto. at 80, theres very little grain, but you need a longer exposure. at 1600, its a much shorter exposure, but theres a lot more grain. i left it at high auto.. theres a little more grain, but in a good way.. gives it a slightly better feel. just cause im bored, i might do some comparison shots with different ISOs |

haha I knew most of what you just said. I know how ISO affects the image. I just don't get how it translates from film to digital... since you don't have FILM (obviously they've made a transition from one to the other). and I was pretty sure about the ISO matching the film, but since I dont use film, I could have been wrong.
you know what else I dont get about digital... all cameras shoot in RGB, and printers work in CMYK - and I would imagine most photographers like to print their shots (maybe not so much now, since most people have point and shoot cameras and just put their photos on their computer & online). but why is there no setting to shoot in CMYK? people now have to callibrate their monitors if they want to color correct their photos before printing them. this just seems dumb to me. |

I actually have a funny story that proves this point... So about a month and a half ago, my dad, brother, and I went to Yosemite for a day. The entire time I was there, I shot 3 rolls of film. My last roll was a color roll, so it didn't matter all too much towards my actual photo assignment, so I didn't really care how bad the shots came out. Me and my dad got in a conversation in the car about how you can pretty much take a picture ANYWHERE in Yosemite and it'll turn out nice because there's pretty much no bad place to take a picture, so I put my camera out the window and took a picture to try and prove that fact wrong. It ended up being on of my favorite pictures on that roll. ![]() |

I just weighed my camera bag out of curiosity... its over 11lbs, it barely has anything in it other than my camera and 2 lens's.
Another out of curiosity, my D90 & 80-200mm lens is 5lbs. who needs working out with a camera that heavy pffff! |

that just means its a good lens. its like in OG jurassic park when theyre in the SUV on the auto track and the kid is playing with the night vision goggles. the older dude goes "dont play with those. are they heavy? then theyre expensive."
weight = quality, right? same goes for snowboards, as of right now. heavy is the new light. |
