I'm going out to Vermont in March and I've been checking out websites for the resorts, but I'd like to hear first hand what mountains people think are the best so I can make sure I get to the right ones. I want to do both back country riding as well as hit the parks. If anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it a lot.

I don't know, that's why I'm asking. My brother-in-law used to live out there 5 or 6 years ago and said there was, but he doesn't remember where.

negative on the backcoutry.
Mt Snow has the sickest parks in the east For big terrain, I'd check Killington (crowded), or Stowe (far)

Killington is awesome, it has everything. The mountain is so big that It is easy to get away from the crowds. Sometimes the K1 Gondola gets busy, but there are plenty of other lifts to ride and even another Gondola.

THere's backcountry riding on the east coast - just not as good as what's out west.
In march - I wouldn't count on much of that. THe snow just isn't going to be there. Mt Snow is definately one of my favorite mountains on the east coast. Okema is fun as well. It sort of depends on where you're going in VT though. There's a big (few hours) difference between Southern VT and Northern. Killington is a lot of fun - and you can find places away from the crowds - but the attitude there tends to bug me more then anything. That's part of why I like Mt Snow over Killington, and the same reason why I like Windham over Hunter in NY.

March can still be decent. I went to Okemo last year first week of April and I'm pretty sure nearly all the trails were still open and the snow was great.

March is still fun at the resorts, but backcountry riding in march isn't going to be too much fun.... |

Okemo FTW, big mountain with lots of trails, start at the top and make your way down going across lots of different trails. Killington is overrated from what I have heard and I hate crowds so I have yet to go, I'll get back to you on Sugarbush, I am going there in a few weeks. Don't forget Mt. Sunapee across the border in NH

Killington is my favorite so far. I just went to Mt. Snow last weekend and although it's a nice mountain, Killington takes my vote. It's alot bigger with a larger variety of trails. Wait time on the lifts was about the same despite the crowds for this reason.......mt. snow lifts are slow as hell compared to killington. There may be more people in line at killington, but it probably takes less time to get to the top. The lower gondala is also nice because people rarely use it. They also have some sick deals (check out their website).

Where are you coming from, how long are you going to be there, and are you looking for nightlife?
The big one's are Killington, Stowe, and Jay. Killington has the most terrain as far as I know and could keep you busy for a week, plus it has the most nightlife you will find. Jay and Stowe both have good vert and are a lot of fun, either one of them would keep you busy for 2-3 days. You might also want to check out some off the beaten path places like Pico (next to Killington) and Burke (hidden gem). I would not waste your time with Mt Snow, Okemo, and Stratton. I like the first two very much (not a big fan of stratton) but they are in southern vermont and see a lot of daytripper traffic from Mass. |

BC is very limited in the NE due to dense old growth forests everywhere. Your best bet for that is to check nelsap.org for some defunct resorts. |

I'm heading up to Vermont for the first time to board and I'm pretty damn excited. I'm an international boarder so I don't really know much about snowboarding in the US. If my friend's place is near Burlington, where would be the best place to hit up that's a close drive away? Any pointers as to which mountains would allow off-piste boarding or all mountain access?
Thanks! |

I'd avoid Okemo, their lifts are sloooooow.
My favorite is Killington because even when it does get crowded, you can get away from the crowds. Basically avoid K1 and the bunny hills. I always lap SkyeShip when it gets crowded since the lines are short to nil.... |
