check out curtis' twin cities thread, a bunch of info in there!  afton's not bad if you're close, i had a season pass there for a couple years because it was only 15 minutes away.

yeah it's not bad if it's a close drive, not the biggest hill around but if you don't have time/money to drive it works ok.  i wish they had more specials/deal thou cuz it's pretty expensive out there

Yeah it is expensive.  Think I spend close to a thousand dollars last season.  Bought the season past in oct and it was some where around 350 after tax.  Gone about 15 times so far this season - Making my season pass worth it.

from cottage grove you might want to check out welch village. buck and hyland are pretty small but they have a lot of rails and stuff in the small area. trollhaugen is cool, but pretty small.  i think afton is the best bang for the buck in the area

I live in Hudson and have a season at Troll.  It's only $199 if you buy by April 1.  It's only about 10 mins farther than Afton for me.  IMO the conditions are better at Troll than Afton: seems less icy, no flat areas to skate to the next lift or run, late nights until 3 on Fridays, better parks, & much better bar/restaurant.  All subject to debate of course.  Troll is def smaller.

I was at Welch last Friday after we got the +8'' and it was awesome, but I stayed in the new back bowl for the most part.  Some of the groomers were OK, and IMO the worst park I've ever seen.

Heading to Troll tonight for the last late night.  I think there's a band and free BBQ.

-afton makes more snow, grooms more, and you wont have to skate if you know how to get around and which lifts to take. not to mention it is way bigger than troll so there is less to get sick of, and more spaced out so lines are shorter. troll is cool once in awhile but its pretty small so it gets old quickly. i hate riding at night so the late night friday thing doesnt do it for me, the only thing i like about that is all the hot girls who show up there.

$100 season passes at welch village with a college id for anyone interested next year.

Glad to see somebody else noticed both of these things as well.

I wouldn't go to Afton again unless it was free.  I'm experienced enough to know how to pump through the flats, but it's crap trying to get around there.  The runs themselves aren't too bad, but getting to where they actually slope downward is awful.  And the one little curved area in the trees, it's right after the little tunnel you can ride through, has got to be the worst idea I've ever seen.  It actually goes uphill at the end and it's so slow to begin with you hardly ever make it out.  It's a sad place, in my opinion.

As far as Welch goes, I could only laugh at the park.  The jumps were pretty sweet cuz they weren't massive and unmanageable for me like most other places.  However, maybe something like 3 rails in the whole place.  It was weird.  The place as a whole was very reminiscent of Afton.

I'll stick with my Spirit, and maybe the occasional trip to Wild/Troll/Buck for something in between.  Might check out Hyland today, just for something to do.

^i know exactly which run you're talking about.  do they still have the main park set up there?  that used to be a bitch if you would fall then try to make it out of there...

otherwise, i never really have problems with the flats at afton.  i know they are a pain but if you know where you're going you can avoid getting stuck.  i can see how beginners or people not familiar with the layout would have a real hard time thou.  guess it's just one of those things that if you know when a flat spot is coming you can easily avoid getting stuck

yeah, afton was a bit hard to find my way back to the main chalet for some reason I was turned around.

and I only made the mistake of the flats once, and that sucked pretty bad, but whatever.

I do have the most fun at afton though, I've been to troll/wild/spirit too, and the only other one thats really fun for me is spirit, and wild just has the wall.

thats just me though, I'm the speed junkie, and I'm just getting into the park.

however, for people/vibe around the park, troll takes it easily, especially if you are on the right side of the hill.

I like afton but mostly because it is the closest place to me besides buck hill. I just suck too much at riding park to want to go to buck and sit there all day watching people be good haha.

Also those flat spots are not hard to get over.   Maybe the first time before you know they are there they can suck but after that it is more of just a small annoyance.

That one with the tunnel is kind of annoying but it is just because every little kid out there thinks the tunnel rules so they go through it then stop once they are at the flat and jsut sit in the way. Angry
