What sort of things should I do to prepare for the next season. Are there exercises or training that will help improve abilities? |

yoga is great for flexibility, balance and isometric strength.
general cardio training is good as well for endurance through the day. mostly though, I'd say do anything to stay active and healthy. If you want to go hardcore, you can get a ripstick to work on independent ankle motion.

I would say cardio stuff like running and swimming and riding the bicycle. Nothing sucks more than being winded after your first run of the season.

Also, take a look at a freeboard. It is like a snowboard for the streets. It has 6 wheels and 2 of them swivel so you can do ground 360's and such. I haven't tried it but it looks pretty sweet. |

totally changing the subject..
But, I see some boarders and wonder how flexible you have to be to pull off some tricks.. i'm assuming people have to stretch for this... right?

^^^I think stretching is very important. Not only does stretching help with flexibility, but it also helps with injury prevention.

x2 on the stretching. I also think strengthening your core is one of the best ways to prepare during the off season. Focusing on your core (abs, lower back, and hips) will greatly increase your endurance. Straight out of Men's Health, "Developed core muscles help you react faster and stronger, and let your body distribute stress evenly and absorb shock effectively. Athletes who give these muscles proper attention will reap enhanced balance, body awareness, coordination, and flexibility."

Couldn't agree more. Atleast to me, skating just makes pulling off tricks in snowboarding that much easier. A lot of techniques carry over from skating to snowboarding. Other than skating or possibly surfing, I would say eat well and do the exercises already suggested by people.

Besides moving to where the snow is...
Cardio and stretching(yoga) are a necessity unless you want to spend half your pow days in the lodge. The aforementioned leg exercises (squats etc.). Jump squats are also good. Balance boards are awesome! They aren't just for fun or practice, they actually work your core and stabilizer muscles. Just about any exercise that is a balance exercise will work your stabilizer muscles, which besides your calf and the arch of your foot from riding toe side too much, is almost always the first thing to be challenged your first days back on the slopes. |

do some bosu ball training. one leg standing. also squating on a bosu ball going side to side putting all the pressure in your hell squeezing the qlutes as you transfer sides. what this does is strengthen your hip adductor and abductors. make sure you train your quads as well doing stuff like leg extention and bulgarian lunges. or normal lunges work just as well. make sure you get cardio in as well as u use your fast twitch muscles a ton while snowboarding. got any other questions just email me.

I've been doing box jumps, keeping my legs at shoulder width throughout (to simulate binding distance). You can do it onto pretty much anything as well.
In theory it seems like something that would help riding boxes/rails in general and build muscle that you use in the same process. Not sure if it actually does, but hey if not its an extra workout so it's win/win for me. ![]() http://www.brassringfitness.com/workout-techniques/box-jumps/ |

I skateboard in the summer, so that is pretty much all I do to stay in shape for winter. Sometimes I ride my mountain bike on an indoor trainer starting in november just to get some cardio and leg stamina.

Yeah. Just hit a pool or half pipe twice a week and you'll be in great shape come winter. Street just doesn't work your legs quite as much. |

I never really got into skateboarding as much so I do BMX in the off season which works out most of your body, and gives you some good endurance. Plus a good run every morning or so is a great way to stay in shape. Stretching helps a lot, if you don't you will regret it the next day.

Wall squats would be good conditioning since you spend the majority of your time on the board with slightly bent knees for a prolonged period of time.

I'm picking up biking to keep legs strong and my cardio up. Usually when I board with friends I'm the last one standing. If I'm gonna go snowboarding I want my legs and heart to last from morning till night.

Here is a 4 week plan that is supposed to help you get ready for the upcoming season. I imagine you can do all the same stuff during the off-season:

My wife does P90X and loves it. She's been doing it for over a year and it has really helped her out during the snnowboard season. I do a lot of jump squats and box jumps prior to, and during the season. It definitely helps my legs get used to the "fast twitch" motion of jumping up and then landing and absorbing the impact. It really helped me out last season and I was actually able to hit the kickers in the expert park this year because of that. Like everybody else already said, do a lot of exercises for your core. I use an "Indo" board which helps with your core and balance and again, I could tell a difference in my riding as I was more stable because of spending some time on the Indo board.
Jaybez, thanks for the link. Those base exercises are a good start and will help any rider out.
