Pretty much all the snow in SoCal sucks now. I doubt Bear would be much better.

Mammoth is the way to go right now.

Bear and Summit wasn't so bad, but if you're new to boarding, the place can become bumpy by afternoon due to people moving the snow around which would be difficult for beginners.

unfortunately, all the snow in Los Angeles and San Bernardino is about the same...mostly man-made (sticky) and not very deep even when it is real.

also unfortunate is the fact that the next closest resorts from Los Angeles are about 5 hours drive north.  5 hrs up the 99 freeway will get you to Sierra Summit and the same distance/time up the 395 freeway will get you to Mammoth.

the good thing is, both these are much better resorts than anything in LA or SB.  Mammoth is far the superior of the two, being over 2000 feet higher than SS and slightly higher in latitude (farther inside the standard california storm path). Mammoth is also easier to get to because there are no winding foothill and mountain roads to deal with...the freeway basically takes you right there.

even better, some would say mammoth is the best resort in california and, so far this year, they've gotten significantly more snow than even any of the Tahoe resorts.  This season, both SS and Mammoth got 6 powder dumps (so far), as opposed to 2 in the LA area mountains, and the amount of snow per dump is often nearly three times as much as down south.

There's always that virtual boarding simulator at mt high.
I'm not sure where else they have it, but it's definitely at high.

For a beginner, Mt. High better in term of cost. You can just buy the points. My wife and I started mid-season. We are sharing 1000 points and have maybe +300 points left.

Snow Summit has a longer beginner run and has two express lifts that go to the same point. This means less time on lift and more time on the slope.

I agree with Shop, Mammoth is better than both Mt High and SS. However, it way farther and more expensive.

To summarize:

Mt. High = McDonald's
Snow Summit/Bear Mountain = In 'n' Out
Mammoth = Morton's Big smile

OMG, with the ridiculously filled in base they've already got and a the fresh dump they're getting tonight, you could be getting mammoth about as good as it gets

I would hit up snowbird, utah. pow days. ya. but big bear makes new snow every night, so that shouldn't be terrible. Mammoth will be a lot better, but not as awesome awesome as the snowbirdy.

Last year was a lousy season for snow for Socal, this year the supposed El Nino will be in effect and snow is expected to be much better.

Baldy is the closest but the snow is rarely good, you have to go there right after a dump or else you get rocks and ice.

Mt High does make a lot of snow but also get the real stuff too. Depending on what time of the day you go, yes there is ice or packed snow. If you go at night, ICE. If you aren't all into park, try the East resort. It has a 1 1/2 mile run, gets the blood circulating.

Bear/Summit, well I've only ridden there a couple time honestly. I hate the drive. Great Park and pipe but kept running into flats where I'd start to stick and literally have to walk it out.

If you have the time and $$, drive to Mammoth. You can beat the size and snow coverage.

You didn't know what you think you thought you knew.
