Anybody know of cheap places to stay in tahoe?  I am going this weekend and decided to not stay in tahoe cause it was to expensive.  I'm staying in reno at the grand sierra for 70 bucks for two nights, but would have like to have stayed closer.  any ideas?

Reno is the cheapest it's gonna get. It depends on what resort you plan on going to. Homewood, Alpine, SB, Mt. Rose are not that far at all. Maximum hour drive.

If you're going to Heavenly, then I recommend the Stardust Lodge. Right across from the gondola and about $60 a night give or take.

And steff is right about the Cal Lodge. $25 a pop by Sugar Bowl, but it kinda feels like a military barracks haha.

Since you thanked Steff, we can assume you're hitting up the North Shore.

Otherwise, barnyard's call of Rodeway in SLT is good as well as a couple other dives if you just wanna a place to rack out... i.e. I don't recall the name, but they have a HUGE sign w/ the day's current rate just before you roll passed Sierra@Tahoe (on Tue, they listed a $29 rate... I imagine it's prolly $39 on Fri & Sat).

Same here, except I graduated UCD in '01.  I was too broke and too busy with engineering classes to go snowboarding :/

i just stayed in the basecamp at kirkwood.  one bedroom with kitchenette, fold down king size bed was $190 bucks for one night.. you could probably sleep 6 or so people though.  But this place was not the nicest.    We should keep this thread updated with cheap nor cal lodging  :)

Mont Bleu is $49/night midweek right now. Jumps up to a whopping $69/week on weekends.

Pretty much any hotel in SLT will cut a deal right now. Inn by the Lake is awesome - but slightly out of the way, if you call 'em I bet they'll cut you an insane rate.

3 peaks is also super nice depending on the room you get. Their hot tub is REALLY nice too. They have some rooms with these massive stone fireplaces - and again - if you call i bet they'll give you a deal.

All the hotels are cutting deals left and right. I was in Mont Bleu the other night, and the place was DEAD. They're all hurting for business. So - just call, see what they'll do for you - then ask 'em to do better. They probably will.

I'm here for the gangbang....

I went to tahoe a few weeks ago and I found the lowest prices on skilaketahoe.com and travelocity.  I think they deals at a few Reno casinos for $29/night.

Hey I'm on the same page as you. Just got my pass and hoping I can just sleep in the back of my 4runner when I'm down there on weekends. Do you know if there are legit places to sleep in your car around Kirkwood without getting hassled?

KW's overnite RV parking info...
http://www.kirkwood.com/pages/resortservices/parkingshuttles.asp

If you're not real familiar w/ all the various lots there, here's a map showing the layout of the lots, buildings, lifts, etc....

Looks like the RV lot is the larger lot of the few that are across the way fr the Timber Creek area (see lower left of large map). Unfortunately, there are fees for using it though I'm sure there a ways around this, esp. if you don't have a full-on RV. A long-time skier I met there last year told me he sleeps in his camper mounted to the bed of his truck all the time. I think he parks over by the Towers near Red Cliffs.

FYI: If you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. The groomers & the lot clearing equipment are noisy. I slept in a condo across fr Chair 6 & got woken up by 'em around 3 or 4 in the a.m.

ugh, hopefully they won't care about some college kids sleeping in their trucks... that's a far cry from a lush, warm RV.

Thanks for the info. It looks like they charge $25 a night for RVs! I'll have to give them a call tomorrow and see if someone with a regular sized car still has to pay that fee. On slow weeks couldn't you get a room in the area for close to that??

I wonder if any BLM or FS land around there is accessible in the winter...anyone have any idea?

can you really just stay in your car...i thought that it was illegal or something..like the coppers would come around and say "move along now"

not saying that i havent slept in a car by the side of a mountain myself...haha

Well your right, it is illegal, however im sure they are some lots or "secret" places that people stay. Hence why i am trying to find some so i dont risk the chance. If i dont, well then its just hoping i dont get caught, if all else fails ill just park in some random persons driveway :)

I called the parking/transportation office twice and no one answered. I'm assuming that is because they haven't opened yet...

I'm heading down there tomorrow so I'm just going to ask in person, then have a look around the area to see if I can find some good spots off the beaten path or out of sight. I know there is forest service and BLM land surrounding Kirkwood where it is legal to stay overnight. The trick there is getting up any roads with all the snow...

I think its only illegal to sleep in your car if you are parked somewhere you aren't supposed to be...like on the side of a highway or in the day parking lot or something like that. If you are on public land and not in the middle of a road I'm sure it is fine.

If you did try to sleep in an illegal spot I cant see a cop writing a ticket or actually doing anything beyond asking you to move.

I dont fully understand the law, other than the fact of knowing that its illegal. My from stance, i would think it isnt because you are in your own property, and you should be able to park overnight in your car except when a sign is placed stating no overnight parking. As far as fine, most police officers would most likely just tell you to leave, unless your a douche, then they might write you a ticket.

It does cost $25 to park overnight anywhere at Kirkwood no matter what kind of car, where you park, etc. You can buy a $200 season pass for parking overnight if you are into paying ridiculous fees and that sorta thing.

Fortunately there are sno-park areas along 88 where you can park overnight for $5 or get a season pass for $25. Not quite as convenient as staying right at Kirk but still better than driving all the way home.

There is nothing close to kirkwood. Closest town is Myers - which is 30 miles away. Kirkwood isn't even on the grid, they have their own power station in the valley. It is in fact the middle of nowhere.

also with kirkwood - if you have a season pass, you get a discount on mid-week lodging. I stayed for 2 nights awhile back in a pretty decent condo for like, $200 somethin. Little pricey compared to some of the hotels in southlake, but it was a nice place, and right near the lifts.
Place also could have slept 4 people easily, probably 6-7 if you didn't mind packing in like sardines. Split that 200somethin between 4-5-6 people, and it's not very expensive. Well worth the money I think.

On a side note - I also have a kirkwood pass, and spend a fair amount of time up there. If anybody wants to get together and ride in the next couple of weeks, let me know.
