Just get a good DSLR... I would recommend saving some money by buying gift cards from somewhere like giftcardgranny.com and using them in conjunction with a coupon... Just got a gopro hero 3 black edition for $290 doing that =)

Honestly I got this free app for my Lenovo touch screen computer and it works great. It's called Fhotoroom and yes it has an F at the beginning lol. There was a lot of color to start out with though so it's all the better. I'll post some more later.

don't get the sony alpha series... i had to buy one for work, and while it works pretty well, it's extremely over priced. Also, it sucks at taking pictures of things about a foot away. if i had a choice in the camera, i'd never buy the sony camera again...

I bought me one of these. Check it out. Comes with a kit with another free lens. Helps you learn to shoot manual or you can always do smart auto. Small lightweight but takes dslr quality photos.

I do a lot of other photography than just snowboarding. That's why I went with a DSLR. I also honestly like canon way more than Nikon or anything else. Haha I was surprised that I found this thread as well actually. Just thought I'd let everyone that helped out that I had finally got one. I did a lot of research and demoed a lot of different cameras. I put some money away here and there for the camera and don't regret getting it one bit. You are right though maco, I have used my friends go pro a lot and it is a lot better for just shooting videos and some pictures while boarding. I spent 5 bucks on a tripod from value village and it works fine. I'll put some pictures up that I have taken of snowboarding with the DSLR. I don't think you'll be disappointing maco
I got the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM lens by the way. I didn't pay full price for any of the lenses I have. Got them all for under about $170 each. |

Have some shtooking fun with it and you will learn. I mean honestly what? are you saying dont get a camera unless you were born with some god given powers to use a camera perfectly?

since this is a snowboarding/outdoor forum, im going to suggest action cameras. gopro3 and contour+2 are both much cheaper than 800 but will get you some awesome awesome videos
i personally go with contour because the form and fit is just so much more suited for wearing. i primarily use it for snowboarding, paintballing, and motorcycling. In terms of video quality though, gopro is arguably better

If you havnt yet nikon sets up free lessons for either type of camera that you buy. I have both and the slr is really nice its just totally bulky and doesnt fit in any of my pockets for the really sweet shots that I bought it for on top of the mountain

Since you dont know very much about cameras just get a point and shoot (and yes they are digital) I think a SLR-D would be over kill for you. Unless you really want to get into photography and you are willing to put not only the money but the time and effort into it then just go with an everyday camera.
Plus what kind of shooting are you planning on doing. Close up macros need a completely different lenses then say a a lenses that you would use to take pictures of landscapes. Im into photograph and let me tell you its a expensive hobby... even more expensive than snowboarding. Hell i just had to buy a new tripod and it cost me over $200. I know a a couple of kids who have SLR-D and they think there all cool and take great photos. But all of them take shit photos and it pisses me off to see people through there money away by getting SLR and not knowing how to use them! Anyways i have one question to ask you. What kind of shooting are you planing on doing?

Don't have much else to add other than I hope you're really serious into photography to spend that much money on a camera. Like what Sinixstar said, I feel that a lot of people want to take shots that would be overkill with an SLR. I generally only take my dSLR on trips that I know I'm going to be playing camera man or at least can prepare for in advance. I do not have a point and shoot camera which is killing me, because I would love to have a small one on me to take quick, simple shots that my cell phone can't cover, but otherwise had me taken by surprise without my Nikon.

I have the Rebel and the rebel xti, they're both solid cameras. I love canon lenses, and thats why i've been using canon for the last 6 years. That said though, i forgot a battery to my rebel for a shoot last wknd and borrowed my friends Nikon D300 the day of. Long story short, i'm selling my Rebel and lenses and switching to Nikon. I saw colors in the Nikon that i just didnt get in my Canon sensor. If you're looking to break into somewhat serious photography, a point and shoot will not do what you need. You can get a reasonable body and lens for the price you're looking for. I doubt you'll need above 6 or 8 MP's if you're getting an dslr, but they're getting to be so cheap nowadays, why not? Heres a good one..

dragon: curious what lenses do you have or take out on the mountain? i'm looking to add another lens, something that has longer reach. i was thinking the 70-200mm f/2.8...but i'm not to sure about paying so much extra for the IS, i hear it's mainly for stationary objects and doesn't have much impact if your are panning or taking action shots. it seems like the sigma 70-200 would be a good alternative for half the price of the canon.

I know quite a bit about cameras... i was in your boat not to long ago and decided got get a canon 40D for around $600.
I chose Canon over nikon because the lenses are easier to obtain and are cheaper. Honestly though if you are considering going into a DSLR realm. The body of the camera wil be a miniscule expense compared to all the lenses you will want to buy. I have 3 lenses, one lens cost me a whopping $1300 bucks while the others cost me anywhere from 300-500 bucks. If this is a serious hobby. I'd suggest you pick up a mid tier camera like a Rebel of some kind and get a NICEEEE lens. once the rebel breaks down you can upgrade your camera body. Let me know if you have questions

I have Cannon Xsi with a 28-105mm lens and a 75-300mm lens. i use it all the time when i go up riding. there have been a couple of times when it would have been nice to have more wide-angle focal length. this camera has a lot of features that make it great for shooting something moving like when im riding. also it is really easy to use and user-friendly, which makes it a great entry-level SLR. i got mine from B&H Photo. great service. and i got the body for $557 and the lense i got from Amazon for $125 i think. definately a good but and worth it.

I have a Panasonic Lumix DCM-TZ1 its a few years old now, but now you get a TZ5 I think. Well worth checking out coz mine is the really good, everything I could have asked for just a bit big in size, even my mates who use it comment on what a high tech camera it is.

If I were you I prob wouldn't get an SLR, it think it would be over kill. Like giving someone who just learned how to carve a vapor.
I would vote canon G10 or the one sinixstar said both look good. or this one http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-1050SW-Digital-Black/dp/B001CCJNY4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1239689510&sr=1-1 They have older models i liked better I think. I think that would be a really fun on to have. |

Unless you're using it for blown-up prints afterwords (better then 8x10) I personally wouldn't bother with an SLR. You can get all of that in a really good point and shoot. Some of the sony's are nice, although i'm not a big fan of sony. Night shots are kinda - eh. Olympus's sensor works really well for low-light stuff, but I don't think the quality is there the rest of the time. This for example is $339 - and is going to be able to do just about anything you want out of it. The resolution is high enough you'll even be able to get it blown up a bit, and has a 12x optical zoom. The only advantage of a digtal SLR over a digital point and shoot, is with SLRs you can swap out lenses as needed. This however is both a blessing and a curse. You end up spending $$$$$$$$ if you want good lenses, and then you have to carry them around. Personally - after years of carrying around a 35mm SLR and a handful of lenses, it's just not worth it. The vast majority of the time if you want to take a picture, you want to take a picture NOW. You don't want to dig out a lens, meter it, adjust your settings, and 4 minutes after you thought of taking a photo finally push the button.

Honestly - I think SLR's are overkill for 99% of the stuff people do. Unless you need super clear hi-res pictures, some of the little point and shoots will work just fine. I can't really think of any situations i've been in where I seriously said "man, i wish I had dSLR". Given the cost difference when you start racking up accessories like lenses and whatnot - SLR's just aren't worth it for most people.
I would like to have a digital back for my olympus though - but that's just cause film processing is so damned expensive these days. |
