Since you dont know very much about cameras just get a point and shoot (and yes they are digital) I think a SLR-D would be over kill for you. Unless you really want to get into photography and you are willing to put not only the money but the time and effort into it then just go with an everyday camera.

Plus what kind of shooting are you planning on doing. Close up macros need a completely different lenses then say a a lenses that you would use to take pictures of landscapes.

Im into photograph and let me tell you its a expensive hobby... even more expensive than snowboarding. Hell i just had to buy a new tripod and it cost me over $200.

I know a a couple of kids who have SLR-D and they think there all cool and take great photos. But all of them take shit photos and it pisses me off to see people through there money away by getting SLR and not knowing how to use them!

Anyways i have one question to ask you. What kind of shooting are you planing on doing?

If you havnt yet nikon sets up free lessons for either type of camera that you buy.  I have both and the slr is really nice its just totally bulky and doesnt fit in any of my pockets for the really sweet shots that I bought it for on top of the mountain

ok so i would pretty much be taking close up pictures of like a lot of different stuff and like landskapes. i would want to take pictures of anything that would make a good picture. my friends tell me that i'm good at taking pictures but i don't have a good camera to do it with.

since this is a snowboarding/outdoor forum, im going to suggest action cameras. gopro3 and contour+2 are both much cheaper than 800 but will get you some awesome awesome videos

i personally go with contour because the form and fit is just so much more suited for wearing. i primarily use it for snowboarding, paintballing, and motorcycling. In terms of video quality though, gopro is arguably better

Honestly why the hell do you care how he chooses to spend his money? If he wishes to lite cigarettes with benjamins so be it.

I say get the damn DSLR. Have some shtooking fun with it and you will learn. I mean honestly what? are you saying dont get a camera unless you were born with some god given powers to use a camera perfectly?

I do a lot of other photography than just snowboarding. That's why I went with a DSLR. I also honestly like canon way more than Nikon or anything else. Haha I was surprised that I found this thread as well actually. Just thought I'd let everyone that helped out that I had finally got one. I did a lot of research and demoed a lot of different cameras. I put some money away here and there for the camera and don't regret getting it one bit. You are right though maco, I have used my friends go pro a lot and it is a lot better for just shooting videos and some pictures while boarding. I spent 5 bucks on a tripod from value village and it works fine. I'll put some pictures up that I have taken of snowboarding with the DSLR. I don't think you'll be disappointing macoWink I got the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM lens by the way. I didn't pay full price for any of the lenses I have. Got them all for under about $170 each.

I bought me one of these. Check it out. Comes with a kit with another free lens. Helps you learn to shoot manual or you can always do smart auto. Small lightweight but takes dslr quality photos.

^^Yeah I did look into a couple of those. I guess I like how much control I can have with a dslr. I can literally make the camera do whatever I want.

don't get the sony alpha series... i had to buy one for work, and while it works pretty well, it's extremely over priced. Also, it sucks at taking pictures of things about a foot away. if i had a choice in the camera, i'd never buy the sony camera again...

Honestly I got this free app for my Lenovo touch screen computer and it works great. It's called Fhotoroom and yes it has an F at the beginning lol. There was a lot of color to start out with though so it's all the better. I'll post some more later.

You're talking nonsense. The Sony nex I have shoots great photos at a foot away.

Just get a good DSLR... I would recommend saving some money by buying gift cards from somewhere like giftcardgranny.com and using them in conjunction with a coupon... Just got a gopro hero 3 black edition for $290 doing that =)

I don't think a gopro can be considered a DSLR

I finally got the Canon 60D! Completely amazing! I'm shooting a documentary in Central Oregon and use the crap out of this camera. I've made tons of amazing timelapses using a motorized telescope head and a motorized slider!

The 70D is arriving soon. I'm kind of lusting after it, I'd like to shoot some DSLR video. Canon came up with a new focusing system that is supposed to track moving subjects more like a videocamera.

Yeah it should be pretty awesome! I've heard that it isn't all that great though. Not to burst your bubble or anything. I just got done making some timelapse videos of some beautiful landscapes!

Is that suppose to be on the new models?  Well I would imagine you need to still have some skills in order to utilize the feature anyways.

I bought a camera for my son and he dropped and broke it just a few months later. For some people you have to encase everything in rubber.

Or, just don't drop it.  LOL  But a drop test really does test out the durability of the product.  I found out that dropping a Canon once would break it, even when in a case.  Broken 3 Canons so far.  While my friend who is pretty reckless has dropped her Olympus multiple times still runs fine.  LOL

It's new on the 70D. I believe it's automatic, but to take video that looks anything like the samples on the Canon website would take a lot of skill and a production crew. Still some amazing quality from prosumer level gear.

i think best bang for the buck under 800 is the nikon d3200. it's the newer model of the 3100 but a huge improvement. if you read the specs on it, you'll be amazed that this camera is not over 1k
