I'm asking this, cause I live in san francisco, and I am asian.  I wear business suits etc.  I've probably been asked 4-5 times in my life by random people asking for directions etc, wether or not I spoke english or if I was american.  It kind of annoys me I guess because I consider myself American first and asian second.  I know there are a lot of asians on this board so i wnated to see what other people thought.

It's SF...there are a lot of people who don't speak English especially Asians in SF. They probably ask because they run into people all the time who don't speak a lick of English. You wearing a business suit is irrelevant IMO. Are non-English speaking immigrants relegated to tattered clothes?

A lot of people don't speak English in the USA anymore. I might find it odd, but not offensive. Of course, it is pretty hard to offend me. Oh yea, I'm a white male between the ages of 25-35 who lives in Vermont. This really doesn't happen to me that much .

I see your frustration.  Not sure exactly how I would feel in the same circumstances to be honest with you.  Closest I have ever come to that was being in Puerto Rico and getting the same thing from tourists, they kept walking up and asking me for directions.  It didn't really bother me, but if someone walked up and asked if I spoke english, I would probably be really annoyed.

i'm Chinese and i think its an honest question.  Depending where you are its a relevant question.  If you were in a largely ethnic neighborhood its a valid question especially when English is not the main language.  Look at it this way, if you were in Chinatown and someone came up to you and asked do you speak a certain Asian language, how would you feel?  I also agree with Jimster that your outer appearance doesn't make a difference.

I'm white, but I don't think you should see this as racist.  I think you're looking at it all wrong.  because of the U.S.'s extremely diverse culture, there a TONS of people who come here every day who don't speak english.  Also, seeing as how you're on the west coast AND in San Fransisco, it is not surprising that you would be asked if you speak english.  Being in a business suit doesn't change anything because of the high levels of international business with China and Japan.  If anything, act like you don't know a lick of english just to mess with them.  You mind as well get some humor out of it!Tongue  I know that's what I would do.

Looking too much into it. I don't consider that racist. I was actually surprised the first few times I visited San Francisco. Out here in NYC, not many of the older Chinese speak English. So anyway, I was in San Fran's Chinatown and asked an elderly gentlemen in Chinese where a certain place was and he responded in perfect English, probably better than mine (and I'm an ABC). I was absolutely blown away.

And the suit thing has nothing to do with it...

I don't know if it's racist, but when people come up to me and ask me that, it does feel a little weird sometimes.

Why don't they just ask the question they wanted to ask rather than starting with "Do you speak English?".  If I didn't speak english, I wouldn't know what they were saying in either case (and they would find out I didn't understand just as quickly) and if I did speak English, there's no chance I would be offended if they asked the original question.

Unless the original question was something like "Why are you asians so damn stingy?"

I don't find it a racist comment.  Been to both NYC and SF and it's great to be able to utilize my chinese but have to default back to english.  When i was out there i'm always asking people if they spoke english.  I'm ABC.

I don't think I would agree with that being racist. I'm not Asian but I can pass for it.. I have had may people try talking to me in an Asian based language.

I don't think its racist, but then again at least they ask beforehand. I mean, over here in NY (I'm taiwanese) and have never been asked that, but I find it a tad more insulting (or stupid) when people say thank to you in Mandarin and completely butcher it. Confused

this poll is kinda silly, thus the skewed results.

Since you live in SF, you know there are plenty of asians there that still don't speak english...and it's a tourist city, so some people from other countries, or even the midwest, may have never actually talked to someone of asian descent.  Should they compose their question to be more politically correct?...maybe.  Anyway, most people can usually tell when someobne is trying to be derogatory.

Seeing as how I've never been to SF, or off the east coast, I can't say but if there are a lot of Asians who can't speak English then I wouldn't be surprised.  They probably think you do speak english since you're dressed so nicely and is why they're asking you, but want to check and make sure.

^^ lol i'm trying to figure out what that means...

there seems to be different kinds of chinese in sf.  there are the typical american born ones...that rock the north face, spiked hair, and drive integras.  then there are the hk's...long-ish hair likely combed down the middle or side, rectangular glasses, also drive integras except with a ton of stuffed animals and totoro decals...often spotted at dessert places.

if you resemble the latter...that might explain a few things.  i've lived in sf all my life and have never been asked that question.  i HAVE, though, been called a stupid gook and told to go back to my own country.

I have no idea why you would say that... It is completely irrelevant and is in no way similar to the question being asked.  Actually i think it is pretty stupid.

Anyway, back to the question.... I am not Asian but I am of Middle Eastern descent and still many people have asked me if i speak English.  It can catch you off guard but I mean what are you gonna do its just how people are. But I would not take that as someone being racist.

I don't know how I would take it if I was not caucasion, but I don't take offense to pretty much anything that people say.

Anyone see the family guy when the dog and stewie were on a train and asked the mexican if he spoke english, and he had some fancy response basically just saying Yes, but only enough to tell you that the only thing I understand is that question, then he just went silent.       I think that would be funny to do to someone in real life, but I would crack up halfway through

I don't think it is...the people who ask you that may have asked an asian person for directions, etc. in the past and turned out they didnt speak english.  Or they may be from an area that has a lot of non-english speaking people.

I used to live in an area where there were alot of people whose primary language was polish, and some people barely spoke english at all

I don't consider that racist. It's not that they laugh in your face and say you can't speak english. They just want to find out if you can help them with directions, weather, etc.

Probably if they asked you like, "Yu espiki ingrdish!!?" or "Hey you chink, do you speak american?"

Could be that they've ask a bunch of fobby looking asians before you and they got tired of getting the reply "No ingrdish."

Is it racist? No.

Is it Ignorant? I don't think so either, because they don't know you personally and they are asking you to make sure without making an assumption.

You may consider yourself to be american first, but everyone still sees you as an asian. You are expecting people to look at you and treat you the same as any other white dude on the street. That will never happen because you don't look like any other white dude on the street.

English is a language made by white people and since you aren't white, it's not uncommon for someone to ask do you speak a language different from your own ethnicity.

Would it be racist if a chinese old lady came up to you and started speaking to you in chinese? You would probably do the same thing if you saw a non-asian guy walking around some where in asia.
