^I haven't been to a grunion run since a kid, now a days the runs are strictly monitored by department of fish and wildlife but they have it a lot down here at Cabrillo Beach,it's fun to catch em with the family but they don't taste very well IMO.

Went fishing today and not a single nibble so we released the minnows and kept the worms. Help em fish get fat! Such a nice day to fish though... too bad we didn't get any action.

anyone here ever used a fish finder? I'm thinking about purchasing one but don't know if it's easy to use, accurate, and most importantly is it worth the buy,I read that it's better just to get a fish sonar instead of getting a finder with a GPS or get new imaging type DSI? this will be used mostly for lake fishing and some ocean trolling..any insight?

We aren't allowed to release bait into the waters anymore.. apparently it contaminates the natural balance of the lakes. How you say? invasive species.. I catch a lot of em grouppers funny looking things. And they eat anything and everything.

That's crazy! Never heard of that! My local shop always tell me to dump my bait into the water if we don't use them all and keep only the bait that we can keep alive. like worms and crickets.

Dumping worms and crickets into the water is one thing... putting minnows and other species of fish is another.

I've definitely seen some species of fish in lakes that shouldn't have been there.

^ maybe those big grey carps that hang around at the marina eating those fish food mini bags that people buy for $1.00. They're huge, come in big numbers, and eat anything you throw at them.

Surprisingly cold and windy yesterday. Got shut out fishing. Switched up bait. Used frozen anchovy and sardine. Stuff wouldn't stay on the hook. Gonna go back to squid.

Had a great night on the pier crabbing. Pulled up 6 keepers and my friend pulled up 5. We threw back a lot of shortys/teens. They were all eating like crazy. Even when the snare came up empty, the bait had been thrashed. The guy on the other side of the pier pulled up 3 big crab in one pull. We were only there for 4 hours. It's the first time I've had one of those nights that you hear the other fishermen talking about. Super tired at work today, but aboslutely worth it.

We used to catch crawfish at the lake and get buckets load a night but now the lake has been over fished so we stopped going.  Cry  Not that I mind, I don't even eat them, my family does though.  LOL

^I would never waste time trapping for crawfish,it's just too much work for something that small with little meat, just take the fam to the boiling crab or claws, it's like seafood heaven there.

^ This was way before boiling crab ever existed.  LOL  It was actually pretty fun catching them on foot with a net, traps off a pier is boring.  LOL  We've even managed to  catch some by fishing rod, little suckers wouldn't let go of the bait.  LOL

Crawfish fishing is fun! Especially if you do it with the family, this takes me back to so many good ol' time when I was a kid. We still do it now when we go on our annual Float Trip. Catching them at light with a flash light is a blast!

We boil our wild-caught crawfish with beer to add flavor, otherwise, we cook em with cajun powder and bunch of other veggies and fruits in the boil.

^ Yeah, we did the flash light thing too, it was so much fun!  We also cooked it in beer too, I guess that's the easy way to do it or something.  LOL

I've only tried fishing once, but it didn't turn out so well since my older bro was like trying to show me and my little bro how he does it and well, he lost my lure by trying to cast and getting it caught on the pier at the toss so I couldn't fish anymore.  LOL

I havent been out for a little over a month.  Spent some time in the snow on a Lake Erie trib for spring run.  Didn't catch anything, but enjoyed being on the stream in the snow with no other people fishing.

went to Cape Henlopen in DE to fish last weekend. it was very windy. probably the most wind I have ever experienced. Also it got cold.
Out on the pier the wind blew harder.

drove 3 hours there fished for maybe 2 hours and drove another 3 hours back.
didn't catch a single thing. nor did i get any bites. apparently there were hard core guys catching flounder.

cant wait to go back and get a bite. And some keepers

^One can only eat so much crab until the thought of eating more crab makes one... crabby. On the flipside, I don't think I'll ever want to pay for Dungeness anymore. So much more fun and fresh to catch the critters yourself. This was my first season crabbing, and the learning curve has starting to level off a bit. I'm losing fewer crabs in the waves and bringing more and more keepers home.

The crawfish hotspot at that time was at a lake at a park in Riverside.  We were fishing at the lake because the crawfish likes to come out at night so we had time to kill.  Oddly, that same day we caught a 2 ft carp and catfish with a regular net by hand.  LOL

Julius, nice crab orgy you got there.  LOL

Going to try again this weekend. Flounder only. Togs are out of season for the time being.
Maybe we'll get lucky and catch a black or red drum off the pier.

It's my buddy's birthday today, so I got him a 9' Beefstick and a new reel. The guy works too hard for what he gets paid, but we love pullin stuff out of the ocean so I hope he likes it. Better than a carton on Winston's, which was my original plan until I actually gave it some thought.

Just for Clarification, the Beefstick is a surf casting fishing rod made by Daiwa at an incredible price point. It comes in various sizes and is made of fiberglass. It's a great rod for catching salmon, striped bass, and crustacians (didn't want ctoma saying I got crabs on my beefstick).

^I got skunked on Sat as well. The pier was more crowded than I've ever seen it. Crossed lines everywhere and people who can't seem to cast out straight. We only stayed a few hours, but came home with 5 keepers my buddy caught.

I've never done salt water fishing. I wish I can go with a friend or someone experienced so that I'll be sure to catch something. Pretty hard to make this happen especially when I live smack dab center of the States.

all fishing is great, if you ask me.  I was lucky enough to be born in one of the fishing meccas of the world, but man I think I would love fishing the great lakes.  it's just so pleasant being on a boat out on the water, even if you don't catch anything.  we have more lakes than the "land of ten thousand lakes," but almost all of them are remote, so to get to them is one thing, but boats.... not an option, hah.

and yeah, seafood that lives around [human] populated waters can tend to not be as "clean."  there is a lot of trash and waste that goes into those waters, unfortunately, so the species living there are living in it and it goes through their system over time.  depends though, you could have fish from a few miles out in clean waters that have ventured toward shore for people to catch.

all fishing is great, if you ask me.

I'm more domesticated to fishing. Having only fished in lakes and once in a while fishing on rivers. First time I fished on the river I can actually see the fish that's biting my bait. And I can also see fish swimming around me too.. at that point my mind was already blown.LOL

So this year, I'm gonna go bowfishing! It's gonna be a blast! Just hope I don't shoot anyone else.

Just bought a St. Croix rod for flounder. Dicks had it for $150, but $20 credit back, $10 off coupon and $10 store credit coming to me. Makes it $110.
Also ordered a Shimano reel for $59.99 usually $100.

ah, I hope I can catch some flounder.
