Waiting for the jello legs to come...34 minute workout and I didn't do about 6 minutes of it, not knowing I needed my yoga mat.

Does anyone know how effective doing assisted pull-ups are for a female, how many reps and set a 5"3' 120lb should be doing. I heard pull ups are very effective at strengthening.

The best way to do pull ups is to do sets of as reps as possible in a set time span for instance 30 seconds and do that until you cant do them any more every day or whenever you can. It's super good for your entire upper body and cardio.

Is anyone doing one of the upcoming Spartan Races in PA (Blue Mountain), VA, or VT (Killington)?  I'm signed up for all 3 but haven't started training yet... I'm wondering if I'm the only one haha.

No Spartan race for me, but I signed up for a 5k zombie run in October.  I wonder how do you train for something that has obstacles, running, and zombies chasing you? LOL

Played three hours of Basketball yesterday. 4 on 4 full court. Now thats a workout. My grey T-shirt was so sweaty that it was dark grey and the end of the three hours. My legs are killing me today.

Ive left it a bit late to start my exercise program for this season. Lucky there is no snow yet at Mt Buller. I've got at least 2 weeks to get it together. In desperation I'll have to hit the treadmill.

The pull-up is one of the best upper-body exercises you can do. Assisted pull-ups are good, as they let you get stronger to the point where you can do them unassisted. That should be your goal, you'll be stoked when you can do your first real unassisted pull-up. As for reps/sets, try to do 8-10 reps with as little resistance help as you can handle to hit that number. As you get more tired add resistance to continue to hit 8-10 for 3-4 sets. Try to make sure you're attempting to use less resistance help each week or so.

Zombie run sounds fun, I did this ROC (Ridiculous Obstacle Course) race a couple weeks ago, which was fun but kind of disappointing. The highlight was a 60ft tall inflatable waterslide, that was amazing diving headfirst onto it.

I play basketball 2-3 days a week, but haven't done much in the way of obstacle training.  I did "mountain climber" type lunge bursts the other day for about 20 minutes with a friend and still felt sore 3 days later.

Same thing with me. I played a lot of intense basketball games lately. And I've been in school for 3 days now without any work outs, but my body is still sore.

hanabanana....I do lunges and reverse lunges in my routine -- which is after a cardio session & plyo-stanced activity....so I know what you mean by leg shaking!

I'm starting to feel the tightness developing in my midsection core. Muscles getting worked out that haven't seen the light of activity in years. Woo!

I went indoor rock climbing for the first time today.  I know I'm supposed to use my legs, but it's so hard not to use your upper body to lift yourself up.  At the end my hands and forearms were numb LOL

Having a really hard time staying in shape this summer.  Both of my knees are long overdue for cartilage removal.  Can't even bike without pain during and soreness after.  Elliptical gets so old.  I've gained 10 pounds in the last couple months.
It's time to call the doc and just get these stupid surgeries over with.....

Been discussed many of times already but yes, it works to burn the fat and build your endurance up a lot.  Pretty much anything like P90X and Insanity will work.

After conditioning back into shape with P90X, I tried to jump back into Insanity but was interrupted so didn't even get through the whole warm up part and now my legs are sore as hell.

Sunscreen!

Yoga in the morning...oh man I was sweating a ton because I guess the room was heated a bit.  And then indoor rock climbing at night!  I hope I remember how to tie a knot from last week.

Anyone use one of those ab rollers things?  They totally work your abs even with minimal amount of reps plus your arms too.

Went to yoga in the morning and indoor rock climbing today.  I was able to climb to the top of a wall I couldn't do last week although there were a couple of times where I was like ok lemme let go of the wall here and think of where to put my hands and feet LOL  Tired me out though, but I don't think my arms will be sore tomorrow like last week

I've always wanted to try rock climbing however I'm always too lazy to work out my arms so I don't think I would go very far with my noodle arms.  LOL

stand flat footed.  Bend down and put your hands on the floor while keeping your body as straight as possible.  Inch your hands forward until you are as flat as you can get, without letting your body touch the ground, then inch your feet towards your hands (keeping hands on the floor).

Congrats, I just saved you 19.99 on an ab roller.  We call it "inch worm" at my gym, but I have heard about a billion different names for the same exercise.  Your core will be flat out destroyed in minutes.

It depends on what kind of style you take.  There are restorative kinds where you mainly stretch and relax while other incorporate heat so you're in a heated room.  The hottest I believe is Bikram at 104F while most hot yoga I would say range from 74-85F in the room.  There's also non heated yoga too.  It depends on the instructor too...you can have a hard yoga class where you're in handstands or headstands or where you're mainly stretching while lying on the ground.

Style wise if you want more of a workout I would do power yoga or a vinyasa style where you flow from one pose to another.  Don't worry if you're not flexible, because the amount of flexibility ranges in class and they also call out modifications.  I can't get into binds so I usually do the modified version while someone whose as flexible like gumby will take the pose to its full expression.

Take a beginner yoga class so they can show you proper alignment.  Also during class they usually emphasize your breath so it's like meditating all the time while you focus on your breath.

@witty - I go to climbx in huntington beach since I got a groupon there a while back

@angrymidget - I think you're supposed to use your legs more to push you up rather than use your arms to pull you up...well that's what I've been trying to do and it's a lot easier that way plus your arms don't die.  Give it a try, it's really fun just being able to climb a wall.

Finally back to doing strength training after breaking my foot two months ago.  Can't really do any mobility/agility/cardio still though.  I might have to take up swimming laps.  I have been going crazy not being active the past two months, feels good to push some weight around.

I just got the cast of my hand this week!! Now I can sort of get back to working out! Just no push ups or pull ups for a little until I can straighten all my fingers! Looks like instead of rock climbing this year I'm going to have to get into mtn biking.

Doesn't mountain biking put a lot of stress on your hands?  You gotta hold the handle bar tight and stable I'm sure.
Sessions sucks hairy monkey balls, the end.

Dang, I didn't even take that into consideration I was just trying to come up with an outdoor alternative to my norm of rock climbing :(

You can always go hiking up really steep terrain I guess.  Although you probably want to start working out your hands again, you can always use those power grip finger exercise thingies.

I love camping for that reason.  You're just active the whole day and not just sitting around unless if you're like just sitting on a lawn chair at your site....

Yoga again today...I def feel it in my arms and shoulders.

No....Went to yoga in the morning and indoor rock climbing today.  I was able to climb to the top of a wall I couldn't do last week although there were a couple of times where I was like ok lemme let go of the wall here and think of where to put my hands and feet LOL  Tired me out though, but I don't think my arms will be sore tomorrow like last week

How's yoga? I want to try it out but I am still not sure what it does.
Is it just relaxing while stretching?
I can't get into binds so I usually do the modified version while someone whose as flexible like gumby will take the pose to its full expression.Take a beginner yoga class so they can show you proper alignment.  Also during class they usually emphasize your breath so it's like meditating all the time while you focus on your breath.@witty - I go to climbx in huntington beach since I got a groupon there a while back @angrymidget - I think you're supposed to use your legs more to push you up rather than use your arms to pull you up...well that's what I've been trying to do and it's a lot easier that way plus your arms don't die.  Give it a try, it's really fun just being able to climb a wall.

Thanks that was a lot of help.
I'll give it a try! power yoga seems fun.

For anyone looking to get into Yoga I strongly suggest "Yoga For Americans" which has been retitled "Yoga and You" recently.  This book was written by Indra Devi who is the person credited for bringing Yoga to the Western World so you are getting the all the information you need straight from the horse's mouth.  You learn the proper breathing technique which is such an integral part of Yoga and yet it seems it seems to still be a secret. She teaches the reason behind each pose and gradually builds you up to more advanced poses as you go through the book.  Although the book does focus on relaxation the more advanced poses work many muscles in your body at once.
