Just wanted to voice this somewhere, and have a reference point to talk to the locals about it.

Super stoked about this, aside from having to breakup with the girlfriend.

Yeah my only advice is dont just jump into moving to CO try to plan it well and make sure you dont have any important factors missing, such as having a job. Trust me my cousin moved to San Fran right before the economy crashed, didnt have a job and then she had to move back to Boston because no one was hiring.

im not trying to sound like an ass or anything just make sure that your not going to have to give up everything and then end up having to move back.

But if and when you move to CO your going to love it. COs full of outdoor stuff and not to mention CO has great snow. Big smile

I'd hardly say im jumping into anything, i'm taking a year to plan/move LOL

I'm not worried about a job, I have skills.  Like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills.

Yeah a year in advance is definitely not jumping in quickly.  Good amount of time to plan ahead.

Jayxprez, when I moved there were plenty of jobs but you had to have a local address to be considered at the time (since then they've changed that).  Plus it was great timing and I had enough money saved up to make the move.

Bow hunting skills are super important here...a must.

I am not sure when exactly you want to move but pep started looking for a job out here at the beginning of Feb and started his new job June 1st.  I know every situation is different but it could take a while to find a job.

Spring/Summer.  Exact month depends on when the job requires.

I guarantee it will not take me longer than 6 weeks to find a job.

I may do that.

The best way though is to go through IT headhunters, they are so desperate to fill jobs so they can get paid they'll do whatever it takes to get you in.  Its like having a sleazy car salesman working for you.

I'm serious about the bow hunting, the shred geniuses all do it here.

We'll definitely drink, bru doesn't drink enough with me...lame.

Yeah just use a colorado address, much easier to apply for jobs.

Did you think about the mountain cities by vail? EX eagle, avon or vail. Within an hours drive to vail or beaver creek. I used to live in eagle. Great for easy access to two of Colorado's best mountains. Personally i like the city better and now live in denver. Commute is not to bad if you wake up early enought to get ahead of the ski traffic.

This process is officially back on, and wheels are in motion as of about 9 minutes ago.

Over the next two weeks I'm going to need to decide if I want to plan this all out and do it the smart way, and try to get a job/save money first and move out in the spring.

Or just pickup and go with $5000 and figure it out when i get there.

Should be fun either way.

$5k eh?  Shouldn't be too hard to find some work, especially if you are not too picky.  That should get you through a couple to three months no problem.

Not a fight so much, just a long discussion and a mutual decision that it wasn't going to work out long-term.  So, yeah.  Colorado bound for sure.

There are tons of IT jobs i'm qualified for in the denver/eaglewood/boulder area so i'm pretty sure i'd be able to find one within a month or so.

So, I think i'm going to be looking in the golden, wash park area of colorado for a place to live.

I figure that puts me at < 1 hour to some sweet shredding, and around 35 minutes to boulder and Denver depending on where I get a job.

Any other location recommendations?

Rent in these two areas is very high, especially since you don't have a job yet, but if you had the job and moving then i'd say go for it.

Didn't seem to bad, found a few nice places in apartment complexes for around $700 a month.  That might be pricy out there, not sure.  I pay $1000 a month hehe.

I could also find someone looking for a room.

Wash Park is fairly central.  It's still going to be over an hour to the resorts.  Golden puts you right at an hour, maybe 10-20 minutes more depending on what resort you are going to.  Unless you go to Echo Mtn, expect a minimum hour drive.

Also, being that you are looking into the IT field.  The vast majority of the jobs are either going to be downtown or in the Tech Center area.  Golden is a real pita to drive in from, especially if you are in the Tech Center.  Which is where a lot of the jobs are going to be based.  Expect an hour long commute.  I'd rather deal with a shorter drive to work, intsead of a shorter drive to the hill.  Wash park is much more central with good highway access, light rail, etc.  I would stick to that area.  You can always move to a different location once you got a job.

University Park and the surrounding Englewood area would also be a decent spot, close to the Wash Park area with good highway access.  I would look at Southeast Denver in general. Lots of great neighborhoods with fairly easy access.

~$700 is pretty typical for an apt out here.  I paid like $730 plus utilities for my apt out here.  IT jobs are really all over the place since pretty much every company has an IT department.  Now that things are worked out with the lady friend are you trying to move sooner?

Yes, my lease is up here 12/1 so i'm targeting a mid november arrival time.  Once I get everything worked out here, and I sell all my crap I should be solid.

congrats on making the decision to come out here. I echo everyone elses' feelings about coming out west. I moved out here from VA a little over a year ago, knowing nobody, and it's been frikkin' sweet. as far as meeting new people, the mountains are a great way. The Denver Boarding Coalition and the Boulder Snowboarding Group are two super chill clubs that do stuff all winter (and summer) and I've made a lot of good friends through both. Look into them. I've run into Bruizza and Nfinit on the slopes a few times (Brian did I get you back Rocky's collar????) and I've crashed in Shay's closet. Colorado's got some fine people and the weather just can't be beat!

to be fair shay, you've got a massive hallway closet. something like harry potter's place under the stairs. although I knocked my head on the ceiling more times than I care to count.

Hey whats up? I just joined this forum, and read that you were looking for a job out here in IT. My company is looking for a network admin. PM for more details. I've worked there for a year, and the environment is pretty relaxed, not like google, but not too corporate.

Oh, and I was in your shoes 2 years ago. I packed the car, and drove 16 hours from Columbus, OH. No job, no freinds, and I lived in a hostel for a month. Best decision I made in my life.

How do you like it? Did you have a job lined up before the move? GF and I have been tossing around the idea of moving to CO this summer before our current lease expires in August.

I'm not a big fan of living where the snow piles up, but I like having snow on the slopes (obviously). Has it been a bain to live in such snowy conditions? I spent 25 years growing up in FL and the past year or so in Raleigh, NC so moving to CO would be a HUGE change for me.

the snow doesn't pile up in denver. it dumps a foot over night and then it's gone by lunch time the next day. it's bizarre dude.

I like it a lot so far.  I did not have a job lined up beforehand (I'm still interviewing actually)

Like taiguy says it doesn't really pile up.  I don't mind living in snowy conditions, I came from Philadelphia, and we get some pretty brutal winters sometimes.
