Hey Portland heads I'll be heading to Portland this weekend for two weeks, staying with family (who I've never met). Just wanted to take a look around and hopefully move out there permanently. Anyone up for meeting up for dinner? What local spots should I check out that isn't in the guidebooks? I don't drink so yes I'll be missing out on some of Portland's local brews...

Yeah Shaka, I even started a fraternity in school and never drank
. I get weird looks all the time. One of my college friends that grew up there said the same thing, she didn't have any leads other than alcohol related spots.

Pearl District is the most interesting part of downtown, but its restaurants and bars...oh and shopping.
The greatest concentration of cougars can be found at Portland City bar and grill, but don't overlook The Vault and Vino Paradiso. The 24 hour fitness on 14th has the hottest chicks |

Acropolis if you like nekkid women and beef.
Voodo Donuts if you like weird donuts.
Mary's Club if ya like old stripbars where the wenches
gots to play their own music on the jukebox.
Burnside Skate park under the burnside bridge if you like
the smell of piss and skateboarding gnarly bowls.
There is so much cool stuff in Snortland. You can just walk around and find
stuff to check.....The PNW rules.

Design, galleries, hiking, cycling? Going to look into some schools to see if a graduate degree in design is worth it. Anyone have hook ups for visits to the Nike or Adidas campus? Or any of the many awesome design / advertising firms in the area? Ziba, Wieden+Kennedy?

Don't even visit, just bring all your stuff and move here then. Sounds like you are perfect for this city.
Forest park has 140 miles of trails, if you want serious hiking, just decide if you want to go to the coast or Mt. Hood and drive about an hour in either direction, otherwise, Forest Park is roughly 5,000 acres right in downtown. Cycling is pretty much the official mode of transport here, just try not to be one of those douchey cyclists that thinks they own the road. |

Yeah I apologize for the behavior of my fellow cyclists. Some don't grasp the idea that if they screw up while cycling, their lives are in danger, not the people driving cars. Cyclists are douches to other cyclists too; there have been so many times I just want to beat the crap outta one in Manhattan.
I've been thinking about moving to Portland for two years now, never lived outside of NYC / Pittsburgh so it's been taking me a while to really feel confident about it. This recon trip is just the first small step!
