I lucked out and saw a video of multiple coon babies mushing recently and it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!

I had a friend many years ago who had 3 coons for pets. They stayed outside, kept in a dog run type fenced area (because they were so tame), and they LOVED doritos & oreos as treats.

The weird part about her having coons? Her husband was a freaking coon hunter (which he hunted with my then-hubs, how I got to know her)...he had to keep his hunting dogs about 200yds behind their house near their barn since the coon run was in the back yard.

That's wild.  I'm surprised she'd let him hunt them or that he'd even want to once he saw how smart they are.  I don't understand hunting them or any other animal for that matter that isn't  done for food.  Coons can't taste good so that leaves just for the hide or fun (both not cool in my book).   And that's a big part of why I don't want to let my little out in the wild, it's sad to think someone could end her life because they get off on killing.

He hunted before she had them as pets. When he hunted, there was an old timer black gentleman who would go with him and would harvest meat/skin/etc (we're talking Louisiana bayou types).

Hunting any common animals helps population control, which is a very big issue. You have too much population and then the animals get diseased, without enough food, inbreeding, and just a whole bunch of not-cool stuff. I have seen this first hand, in different areas...deer & rabbit that were too thin, missing eyes, gross skin conditions, malnourished, yuck. I wouldn't wish that on any animal, so as much as it sucks to know that someone is out there shooting animals, I fully support controlled hunting...especially when the harvest is fully utilized and helps sustain a family who might not have anything else.

I'm all about people using the animal fully, just not about sport hunting at all.  I've got a very native look on hunting.  We humans do need to be stewards of the planet (not rulers) and that includes population control.  I think my problem is that we humans don't control our own population (as we too have issues- inbreeding, nut jobs, etc.).

^I love wild turkeys.  We don't see those around my house, but they have been making their way downstate the last few years.  My folks place north has had them for a while but now I'm seeing some within a half hour of Detroit.  Years back I had one fly into the side of my car on the highway coming back from up state.  I think it was alright, just dazedConfused

The coon is a baby we're taking care of for another few weeks.  I really want to keep her due to this huge attachment we've got to each other.  I know she'd live a lot longer staying with us, but they're a handful to live with.

I haven't seen any wild ones in a few years around here.  There was a mama and a bunch of babies in my yard one night, but I haven't seen sign of them since.  Maybe they smell my cats scent in the yard or are having a tougher time finding food with the recent rat problem.Angry  Rather have raccoons than rats any day.

Yeah, my dog tangled with a whole gang of 'coons a while back.  I like to tell people he was going to take them down, but the truth is he probably would have been worked over if I hadn't intervened.  In the end, everyone came through it unscathed (he had a few scratches, but nothing more).

Now, when I ask him about the raccoons, he goes over and looks out the back door and growls, but he doesn't go out there.

^ Yeah, dogs and wild coons do not mix.  Glad to hear your pup didn't get hurt.  I'm sure he could have done some damage to some coons, but they'd get the best of him.  Especially if a mama and babies were involved.  For the most part I'm pretty sure the coons would rather not mess with dogs or cats, I think they just cross paths and dogs (probably more than cats) will start some shit (wether it's friendly fire or real anger) and the coons react to that.  So far mine doesn't seem to like our cats at all.  She charged our (little bitch) male cat, but that was because he came in her room, came close to me (her mama so to speak) and he didn't act agressive to her (so she could act tough w/o reprocussion, plus I had her back).

@witty1-  kill the critter I've raised since it was a baby, yeah that would happen.  A buddy and I did joke that I should get her a little (faux) coon skin jacket and cap to wear.

I still can't get over the fact that you have a pet raccoon. As weird as it is it is even cooler on so many levels. You are a trend setter and I don't know how anyone can top that other than maybe a pet bear.

^lots of people have odd "pets" (I say that because she's more a companion).  A girl at work told me she had a baby deer at one point (until the dnr got a call from the neighbors), her boyfriend had a fox and zebras.
My wife actually had coons when she was growing up, they'd come and go as they pleased.  It seemed like such a foreign concept to me when she would tell me about it (I've lived in the city my whole life).  Now it feels weird not being able to take her to petco with me.  It just seems normal to me that she's here.

Wow cool, a raccoon! Aren't those buggers trouble when it comes to eating holes in your walls and furniture? I fancied a raven for a long while, but simply no time to devote to a pet. They're really clever birds.

^So would you train your raven to perch upon a bust above your parlor door?Big smile

Been lucky so far with holes. She hasn't gotten into that yet. She is tearing up the carpet in her doorway. She doesn't like being left in her room knowing that we're on the other side of the door without her, so she digs at the carpet trying to get under the door I'm assuming.

I saw a racoon run out of our bushes in the front yard one night a few weeks ago. It darted toward the storm drain and stopped to stare at me for a minute before disappearing into the storm drain. I've never seen it again since then. I wonder if it lives down in the drainage maze and just came up to look for food or something..

His name is Max.  He is half poodle and half golden retriever.  He prefers to not be called a golden doodle because he says that name is lame and hurts him when he is trying to score chicks.  He likes to remind people that he is a combination of the 2nd and 4th smartest dog breeds without actually directly telling people that he is smart.  He is cool like that.

She can be rough, but I think we'll be alright.  She knows who her "parents" are.  It's all in how you handle them for the most part.  Coons tend to be pretty sweet when bottle raised.  Not all are, but you can tell early if they'll take to it or be too wild no matter what.
