OMG, great movie.  Best computer animation I've ever seen - up there with king kong.

I saw the 3D version, which I don't recommend because it takes half the movie just to get used to the glasses and, even, then the picture is darker and motion is all f*kd up.  Good for still scenes but still kind of a gimmick.

GO SEE IT!!!

This looked like a horrible movie! Impressive computer graphics but I don't know if I buy the plot.

im really unsure of the plot as well.. the best analogy i've heard so far is that its 'the last samurai' all over again.. (which was a god awful movie, i thought). anybody got a plot summary?

you gonna have to trust me the so-so plot doesn't matter.  It's all about the eye candy.  Imagine a Roger Dean painting brought to life...worth it just for that, alone

I haven't seen it, but my favorite review so far was from Irene Gallo, the art director at Tor books (a SF industry mogul, as far as I'm concerned). "...With all that money behind Avatar, it’s a shame they couldn’t come up with something more original, but knowing that the environments were the star of the show they turned a good portion of screen time into a loosely narrative, and comepletely mesmerizing, nature documentary...And I can watch nature documentraies All. Day. Long."

I saw it in 3D yesterday, but I wasn't so sure of the 3D aspect, because as Piranha said, the colors were darker, and the motion was a tad awkward. Other than that, I really enjoyed the movie, the special effects were unreal!
I think it's called snowboarding, but I'm not to sure.

Incredible movie.  The most awe-inspiring experience I have ever had a movie theater, edging out the Omaha beach scene from Saving Private Ryan, Batman Begins last summer, and the LOTR films.

The plot is cliched (from the outset it's pretty obvious how this are ultimately going to go down), but the story is well told, it is perfectly cast, the pacing is solid, and the script is tight and largely plausible.  It's a rare 2+ hour movie that doesn't feel like it drags or belabors anything unnecessarily.

The special effects are truly unreal, not just for the way that they blend seamlessly, but from a design standpoint.  The movie looks incredible.

I saw it on a standard screen and will go back to see it in 3D next week.

Really the only problem I had that took me out of the moment is that they gave the ore they're trying to mine a ridiculous name: unobtainium.  When that's the worst thing you can say about a movie, especially an epic blockbuster type of movie, I think you're doing alright.

James Cameron + sci-fi = win.

LOL I knew someone was going to bring up "Unobtanium"...although, I'm pretty sure Cameron wrote than in to be tongue in cheek

Agreed, this is an almost 3 hour movie that had me glued to the screen the whole time...and I have ADD.  Of course, the CG is state of the art, but the acting is very good, too.  Movies with Sigourney Wearer or Giovanni Ribisi are usually pretty good.

the movie was great... and for those whose who think the plot "sucks," well, it's a deliberate reference to why our american troops are in iraq. unobtanium = oil. these not-so-subtle references to real life events, like those found in district 9, only make for a more thought-provoking movie. loved it.

the plot doesn't suck...it's just bordering generic sci-fi.  The good thing about Cameron writing it is that it's not overly complicated...just about anyone can watch this movie and understand exactly what's going on (I hate movies/stories that are so complicated, they're just confusing).

...and Roger Dean deserves more credit.  Most of the visuals are direct representations of his surreal paintings/album covers:

Tropical dragons with floating islands and looping stone arches...even the neon color palate is all Roger.

Weren't they making an Avatar movie off of the cartoon ''Avatar: The Last Airbender" as well? I got confused when this one came out because I thought it was one in the same.

Apparently that movie sucked because I didn't hear crap about it.

I think the plot goes well past "bordering" on generic.  The moment the movie starts it's very clear where the movie is going.  Every character is built around a very simplistic archetype.  The worn out soldier with nothing to fight for, the sleazy businessman, the warmongering commander, the native princess, the scientist with the heart of gold, etc.  Extremely formulaic... it's Dances with Wolves + The Last Samurai + Pocahontas + sci-fi.  Cameron is not big on subtlety.

The thing is Cameron's direction and script are so tight, the movie is so perfectly cast, and the scenery is so spectacular that it doesn't detract from the movie.

the script is definitely "for the people"

I think a nod to "Tron" should be thrown in there as well...there's a lot of neon

There is another Avatar movie coming out that is based on the cartoon "Avatar: The Last Airbender."  It hasn't come out yet though.

As for this Avatar.  I saw it in Digital 3D (regular screen, not IMAX) and I loved it.  I had no problem with colors or getting used to the glasses.  I totally agree with Kimchi's review above.

Aside form the plot being cliche and predictable, this is the most amazing movie I have ever seen.  The visuals alone kept me in awe the entire time.  This movie has set a new standard in visual effects and filming.

Avatar and Avatar: The Last Airbener are two completely different movies.  The one based on the Nickelodeon cartoon series is going to be called "The Last Airbender" and it will be directed my M. Night Shyamalan.  The Last Airbender doesn't come out till Summer of 2010.

the plot was basically how americans took land from native americans for a resource. except this time, john redcorn was a smurf that was 5x bigger and 5x uglier.

Saw it last night, no 3D, no Imax, still loved it. I have this superpower where I can get completely sucked into a plot and forget that I have seen it a million times before in a million other movies. But its worth seeing for the scenery alone. Get there.
Thats whats up.

I came to watch the movie knowing full well it wasn't going to be a tear jerking or movie Oscar like fil. But in an artistic sense Avatar was nothing short of beautiful. I loved just watching the Rendered scenery and environment. Pretty much each and every bit of CGI that Cameron used was messed in very well. From the wild life to the floral movement, it was an awesome sight to see

The plot is alright, I really more or less like a few other found it a mesh of things from other films of it's genre. I really sat there thinking it was Princess Mononake with Halo-esque looking spacecraft and weaponry... which I found even more funny after I saw that WETA, Peter Jackson's effects crew was on board, who has been more than rumored to be on the Halo Movie project. I think Kimchi nailed it on the head, you already knew from opening credit how the story was going to go, but just like how I applauded to see humans get blown to bits in District 9, I was literally fist pumping and coming out of my seat in the big epic battle at the end.

I just feel like this movie is a visual experience more so than a epic ocsar winning story driving movie. So if you perfer the latter then well you should pass it up. But I personally think it was one beautiful film that I have seen in a long long time

Saw it IMAX 3D. Awesome cgi... felt like I was watching a final fantasy or any other square enix film... Some parts really seemed real and some parts felt like a video game movie sequence... overall really good film... I'd recommend in 3D if it doesn't give you headaches.

the animation and rendering were impressive.  worth the movie.  the plot was lame and full of propaganda...but then again most things out of hollywood are full of propaganda.

I do get sick of the stereotypical, 'we are destroying the earth' cliches.  The anti-war generalizations.  With so much on the forefront of technology you can't ask that everything be unique I guess.

I kind of wish the movie would have been less than 2 hours.  I get why some people like it, I am not one of those people.  5 out of 10, purely on graphics.

I've seen Avatar 2x now.  Once was regular 3d and the 2nd time was Imax 3d.  I have to say that the colors in the Imax version did not appear to be as vivid as the standard version, but the 3d immersion in the Imax was superior IMO.  Perhaps I feel that way because of the sheer magnitude of the Imax screen is more overwhelming, but it definitely was an experience.  Remember the 3d movies of old when we were kids?  They used to be really good...It seemed that for a long time 3d movies got really lame.  Well something has changed because once more I feel a total immersion in 3d that I have not felt in years.

I LOVED the plot and special effects in Avatar.  I felt that visually and conceptually it was incredibly fresh..and I say this specifically with regards to the Avatar concept itself, similar to the first time I saw the Matrix.  The idea of being able to "link" into a foreign body and control it as if it were your own is a really cool concept, and thusly the "bond" that the natives of Pandora share with the Banshees and horse-like creatures is quite fresh too.

I do agree to a very small degree that it was "Last Samurai"ish, but only from the aspect of the outsider infiltrating the "hostiles" and becoming an insider, but otherwise there are no similarities.

FWIW, this movie will definitely go down as one of my all-time favs.

"What" ain't no country I've ever heard of. They speak English in What?
