hopefully.  i will be getting a car soon.  it will be my first car, so i want it to be a problem free as possible.  there's a bunch of you in this community that give great advice, so i'm turning to you all as one of my sources.

i'm currently looking at three possible cars.  they all look to be in good to great shape and their carfax reports look good.  here are the cars:

1996 Toyota Camry LE (carfax report)
$2,595
159,000 miles

1995 Suburu Legacy LS AWD Sedan (carfax report)
$2,995
135,000 miles
includes teleport button

2000 Ford Focus SE (carfax report)
$2,895
183,000 miles

what i want is a reliable car with good miles on it and good gas mileage.  i also want it to last me at least 3 years.  i know the toyota and the suburu are built to last, so my main concern is with the ford focus on that subject.

based on your experiences with the makes/models, please let me know what you think about the three cars and suggest which one i should buy.  if you haven't had experience with any of these makes/models, but you are experienced with car buying in general, please feel free to offer some advice as well.  thanks all!

LOL, maybe cuz its your first car you haven't paid attention.  Everyone is going to tell you to get the Subie.

As far as car buying in general, have a mechanic check it out, don't go strictly off of carfax.  They are not very reliable at all.  Autocheck is actually a lot better.  Carfax only reports damage if it was reported to the insurance company, autocheck reports all damage from when it was inspected at auction.

Neither is a substitute for having a mechanic look at it for 60 bucks though.

Dude

I had the 1996 Camery LE (V6). We just recently sold it (and got ourselves a X5).
It had approx 180k and it was still going strong. The guy who bought it test drove it once and signed papers the next day.

i am well aware of the Subie lovers on on this site.  the fact that i'm looking at the Subie has nothing to do with that.  it just happens to be a good looking car based on my criteria.  i absolutely will not join the Subie bandwagon, even if i end up getting the Subie.  i'll tell everyone i hate it and that it drives like shit.

Toyota or Subaru are both solid choices.

Only one of them has a teleport button though.

2nd.

mechanic.

some words of caution, the subaru will be more expensive in the maintenance category mostly because of the AWD transmission and the steps and requirements needed to care for that. if you're ready to take that on and accept much of the financial situations that arise, go for it. for example, subaru is THE MOST strict about their measurement of tires.

you'll find in the owner's manual that no tire can be outside of 1/32 than the others. when buying tires, guarantee yourself to be buying all four, all the time. when you get a nail in the sidewall of a tire, a random blowout, etc. and those tires are not brand new, expect to be buying a full set again. just something to keep in mind.
peace.

of those 3, I would probably say the Camry. I wouldn't pay any more than 2 grand though. Focuses are junk, and I'm sure maintenance on the subie will be expensive.

nothing wrong with loving a subaru. and when it comes to cars (as opposed to many other things people buy) brand loyalty often actually relates to the quality and reliability of the product.

that being said, i had a Toyota that served me well. if you don't need the AWD or cargo space, save the gas and pricier maintenance bills, and go with the Toyota.
this place is bleak.

the camry and suburu are already gone, which doesn't really surprise me, but it still sucks.  the advice in this thread was still quite helpful.  thanks to everyone who had some input.

what do you guys think of this one?

2001 Honda Accord
http://eauclaire.craigslist.org/cto/1535647634.html

doesn't say how many miles but it looks legit.  i've already sent an email asking a few questions about it.  it's only 30 min from me too.

^^links not working.

and i know you're on a budget here but i really wouldn't consider any of those cars to have good mileage... i'd stick with the hondas/toyotas/foreign cars if you're looking for as much reliability as possible
Say Shhhhhh...
