Just wondering if any of you guys are into poker as a hobby or occupation. What games are you into? Where do you like to play online or live? We could use this thread to discuss strategy and other poker related news.

I dabble in Hold 'Em. Tried to play online but it wasn't as fun. Once we get the new house all remodeled and finished we'll be hosting a poker night... hopefully once every week or two. Bought a nice 8 person poker/bumper pool table for the dining room so it should make for some rowdy nights.

Oh sorry i didnt see the older post.
Sounds cool Icechickay, post some pics when you get everything all set up. I mostly play at Pokerstars these days but i used to spend a lot of time at the Borgata and Tropicana poker rooms in Atlantic City. Havent been able to make it up in a few months though. I play in the occaisional game around town but its been tough to find a good one as of late. My games of choice are pot limit omaha, limit and no-limit hold em. |

I have a friend who plays semi-professionally if thats what you would call it. Its his only sorce of income... and its pretty much ruined his life... I would advise against playing for real money, unless its money you expect to lose... poker is fun as heck to play with friends though, i tried online but was bored really fast, I like the social aspect of live play, even though I suck really bad, its still always a fun time!

It's a hobby, but if I won the lottery, I'd pony up the money and play in the WSOP.
I play semi-regularly with a bunch of friends. Always Hold 'Em. Usually $10 buy-in tourney style with rebuys up to a certain point. I'm also in a free poker league in which the ultimate prize is a seat at one of the money tourneys. I've done a few tourneys at casinos with mild success. Also played online on Xbox and Facebook but haven't done either in ages. I prefer live and wish I had a weekly game, but kids and such take up time for many of my peeps. And just where did AA go? |

I play online all the time but I'd rather play in a real live tourny ( or home game if you're in Sac)
In the last 10 months I've won a few tournies online ($2500 , $2000, $1400, $700) and probably lost 2/3 of that back... I'm due for a win soon :) I recently started playing some local cardrooms and have made the final table 7 out of 10 times and cashed 3 of those. I love poker, and I hate it. I think it's a love hate relationship for everyone. Anyone wants to get down hit me up on here. |

I like the structure of tournaments because it forces you to limit the range of hands you will call with as the value of the chips change throughout the tournament. In a cash game it's easier to justify calling with mediocre hands because... you can always reload. If you like that factor then you might want to try a Rebuy tournament. |

Pokerstars for me to. Playing mostly $3 or $6 turbo hold'em tables. Most players don't calculate. So this makes it very easy to win ones you recognize the players styles. Top 3 place assured.

Tournament play is just too high variance for me. Plus, it's nice to sit down for an hour or two, and be able to stop when I want.

I just got done with a 3 hour session on Pokerstars. Played 2 $50+5 sit n go's and placed 2nd and 3rd. I also sat at a $1/2 NL table for about an hour and won another $40. Works for me.
Id really like to get up to Atlantic City sometime soon for a large tournament but last time i was there all of the ones i looked into kinda sucked. The blind structure was weak and forced too much action early. Basically they just want to hurry up the tourney so they can open up the tables for cash games. Lame! |

Yah it seems like a lot of card rooms are like that, there is one about 40 minutes from my house that starts you off with 2500 chips and you can rebuy if you get under 1000 for another 3000 chips or use it as an addon at the end of the 2nd round (blinds go up). So basically you get 2500 for $30 and then another 3000 for $20 more. Makes for fun times plus a lot of local donkies play, good times. |

The cash games at the local casino, Potowatomi, are so soft it's crazy. The vast majority of players are really, really predictable. Makes for some great high profit, low variance poker. If only I went more often. I've pulled around $4k out of the place last year, but only went 5 times.

So its official then.. poker game at BP??
I play pretty often, love it. Not a great player, but i enjoy the game, bluffing, calling bluffs.. you all know how it goes. I used to play at truepoker a lot, dont really have a favorite online site nowadays. I'm definitely down for an online/real game though. |

My experience with gambling has to do with losing dollar amounts that have commas in them.
Needless to say, I don't gamble anymore. |

That would be cool if we were able to organize a little online game for SS members, it looks like most of us play at Pokerstars too.
I logged in last night to see a few hands before bed, bad idea. I got my money in with middle set which was second best to his top set, i didnt improve and i lost about $400. Went to bed steaming for sure. |

Yah thats why I like tournies, you commit a certain amount in the beginning and can play for a long time on it, and you already assume that money is lost. What I dont like about them is this... I was in 4th place in a 1000 man tourny ($3 buy-in) with just 20 players left and was in big blind with A3, flop comes AxA so I'm checking to the guy in middle position who is betting small. River I go in for the raise for about 2/3 my stack since he didn't show any real strength and he shoves... i'm commited and he shows AK, he had me stacked since he was already in 1st, and now a complete powerhouse. |

I tried to deposit on Pokerstars but it declines my bank card. How do you guys do it? I'd be down to schedule some SnG's if I could get on it.
Can you transfer on that site? I'd hook someone up with funds on FullTilt in exchange if so. |

I HATE those so much. It's like, i'll play a few hands before bed and when you lose it's freaking it's 3x mroe fustrating. Even though i don't gamble with $400, it's more like with $40 but still.
The highest tourny i ever played in (because i suck and like someone said previously, i don't really calculate the odds that much) was the $24 turbo game? Not sure. but around there.
I usually like to win the $1.75 tourny a couple time to and take it from there haha.

Yea, most debit/credit card will decline poker site deposits. The only way I've done it has been through direct bank account deposits. On pokerstars this is the eChecks option.

He slow played you goooood....but damn, 1000 player tourny? You got a lot of time on your hands lol.
I didn't know you can transfer funds from a bank account, i only use credit cards.
As for transfering funds, not sure as well. i've only played in pstars. but i'll be down for a game.
There's just only 1 thing i dont like about online games.
It's that there's so many ways and forms to communicate with friends which would give them an edge in a tourny.
For instance, my friends and I used to join the $1.75 tourny and we'll just tell eachothers our cards. And we pretty much transfer chips to one and other when needed until we're top 3.

1000 man tourny takes about 4-6 hours online if you make it to the end.
I've won first in 5000 man Freerolls a few times, took about 7 hours. Tends to go fast in the beginning because .. it's free.. and everyone just gambles all the way till theres like 800 players. My bank card is a debit/visa. I think FullTilt and Bodog get away with it because they process the payments through random sites somehow so it shows up as a random purchase like.. my last one was for "1-800-MedicalHelp bla bla.." or something like that. Then bodog started doing it, probably a matter of time before Pstars too. True having a friend at the same table is an obvious advantage but still no guarantees. Knowing two cards in certain situations is great if you're on a draw and they are inhibiting that draw so.. slight advantage. Chip sharing could potentially be bad because it gives you less buffer if you have to showdown a big pot with another substantial stack but... if worked correctly could save your butt too I suppose. If you cant beat em, join em. |

I've won a 8000 player free roll before too, took around 3-4 hours. It was pretty quick all the way up until the final 100 players or so. Well, top 27 can get you into another tourny that has like a $1000 pot? So yea, but i've only done it twice and that's when i had all the time in the world lol.
At a 10 player table, having 3 friends is huge advantage. There's a high chance that we can out bet the guy unless he has for sure top hand. Like it's easy to tell if one guy is bluffing or not. but to tell if all 3 of them, chances are very unlikely.

To deposit on Pokerstars just use the eCheck option. You have to give them a whole bunch of personal information though, and its an uneasy feeling to give all that info to some off shore company.
The large tournaments are such a crapshoot these days but they are super fun if youve got some time to spare. Pokerstars has gotten so big that they can afford to gaurantee prize pools for many of their tourneys too. If you can make your way through all of the dead money players and make the final table, the payouts are really nice. And the multi table sit n gos provide good payouts for just a couple hours of play. Playing in online tournaments/cash games is also a much safer alternative to playing in live ones. Games constantly get held up and robbed. Its worth the trade off of having to stare at a computer screen for 8 hours to ensure my safety! |

I haven't started playing online yet. I guess I'm not really that into it. I play at a semi-weekly game at a freinds house, which is fun, but more social than anything else. It's dealer choice there, but mostly Hold'em, some Omaha and a few other fringe games.
I've played some sit-n-go's in Vegas (won one). And made the final table in a tournament on a cruise ship I went on once; that was kewl. Maybe one day I'll have some extra time to play online and see some of you there. |

I play online as a hobby, and occasionally with friends. My favorite site is PKR, it's a pretty cool game. Every other poker site is identical, PKR is the only different game. It is fully 3d with customizable players, and camera settings. It's like being in a tv tournament. I usually stick to the freeroll tournaments.

I occasionally play at PokerStars and think for online gaming it is a pretty good site. However, there are really no guarantees that you won't find yourself playing a team of cheaters on any given day. For that very reason, I get a lot more serious when I play house games or in sweet, sweet Vegas.

I had an account at Partypoker then the law stopped that. Later on i switched to Pokerstars. I still have an account on there, with-drawled the money though. Maybe because it was because playing lower limits or something around .50 and 1.00 and highest i played was 3.00 and 6.00 i think, but I like live better and is how i got started into the texas hold em world.
By bro used to host weekly tournament games. Hanging with friends and fam. GOOD times. Not anymore. He now plays at another house with no limit live games. It's just not my style. Risking a lot more than i want to.
I've tried it before i wasn't playing much think it was 5 small blind 10 big blind at the casino. That was my first live no limit game and boy were my hands sweating! I NEVER sweat in regular limit games and tournament poker. I could have fun even it was just a buck buy-in as long as their is some sort of prize it's all good.
