looking real good.

just my thoughts... if you put the chat on that page, people will be navigating away from it constantly to ready forums, vids, ect.

Which will in turn cause them to have one page for chat, and one page for the community. One person potentially having two chats open could bog down a lot, and if i recall, you will receive 2 PC for every page open, and potentially, will not  receive all messages.  They will alternate which chat they go too Currenlty, if you have 2 chats open..

but i really like the look of it and flow.

Good work!

I do not like the recent videos on the forum page and the RSS feed on the chat page. Is the chat detachable? I think it would be pretty awesome if the chat was detachable and the private chats opened in little tabs from that chat.

Otherwise it looks pretty awesome

This is just a quick ugly sketch of a few ideas we are throwing around...wanted ya'll take on what the community homepage would have on it, and what content you think is/isn't important.

There is pretty much content on the page. But as long as it's the starting page and you can navigate to each page by the subnavigation it's great, because you get an overview of all things that changed since your last visit. I have concerns about the chat too.
By the way, have you ever thought about a customizable version? So every user can choose which things should show up on the community page, something like "mySierra".

I think there's too much content on one page.  I like the way the site is laid out now with quick and easy drop down menus with the tab.  If anything it would be cool to have a customizable toolbar at the top where we could set links to commonly used pages on the site.

There is a whole lot of content on the same page. I do like the idea of being in chat and being able to see what new posts are coming through the forums.

We're thinking the homepage would be a synopsis of everything that the community has to offer...there is so much information that get's lost.

I think combining the media section and the forum section is a great idea.

I would like to see a community homepage that works as a starting point to get you where you need to go.

If you cut off the example above just below the chatbox, I think it would work better.  You can see recent articles, recent threads, recent headlines, videos, who's online, and what is going on in chat all on the first page.  Then, you can jump to where you want from there.  The link bar at the top is great for navigating deeper into the different sections like the forum, chat, meet up, etc.

That way, you can easily see what is going on in the community and click thru to whatever interests you.

I would remove the forum section and below except for upcoming ride days

the community home page should just have what has been updated for the day, week or month

as for the chat look at what facebook has you can browse facebook and chat at the same time

other than that looks pretty good.

This thing has WAY too much going on. Makes my eyes wonder.

edit:

I would get rid of the following:

How to videos
Headlines
Sierra Articles
Reviews

Move the Meet up and Ride section to the top, as that's a community driven piece of functionality.
The how to videos, headlines, articles are not really community driven content. The reviews are - but they're more product related then community focused.

I would do a smaller/condensed version of the Upcoming Ride Days across the top - floated left, with the giveaway at the top/right.
Follow that by a more condensed/concise list of recent thread topics. Make it shorter (height, not content) with the recent member uploads to the right - kind of like how it is now.
Follow that by an option to join chat - i wouldn't put the whole chat app directly on the homepage.

The way it is now - there's no clear path for the eye to follow. Everything is organized, but because there's so much stuff on there - it looks jumbled. It's hard to grasp exactly what you're supposed to do or what's available to you.

I would try to cut down on the dimensions of these different blocks from a height perspective, as that will help de-clutter the page, and help give a more clear/direct path for the eye to follow.
I would move ride events to the top - because that is the snowboard community at it's most basic and pure form. We're here because we love to snowboard, so anything that gets us snowboarding should (I think) be one of the top promoted aspects.
I would move the giveaway to the top as well, and make it stand out more. Similar to where it is on the page in this mockup - but with more emphasis.

If you do it in a clear and concise way that allows the user's eye to focus on those two objects, you have a clear and concise call to action, and incentive for becoming a member of the community. "Go snowboarding, and win free stuff in the process - all on sierra snowboard".

That's a much bigger draw that some how-to videos, or recent forum posts - which are now the two places your eye tries to bounce to immediately.

I also say don't put the chat thing directly on there - because with the scrolling of chat 9the only thing that's moving on the page) - it's going to capture the user's attention, and everything else gets de-emphasized, or even lost in the process.

I say remove the other stuff like headlines/media content - not only because they're not really community items - but because they're really heavy. If you look at the layout of the headlines and the sierra articles pieces vs the recent forums piece - the headlines/articles are much more dense. They have much more gravity on the eye, which pulls the user away from the more community oriented features.

When I talked about making the design of the community features more compact - I meant going for something along the lines of the 'Recent Sierra Articles' box. You look at the recent forum posts, and it's full of dead space. You look at sierra articles - and it gives you something to really focus on, everything is clear and easy to see - and it has a weight that draws you in.

Balance the weight/density of all these pieces a bit better, and lay them out in order of importance from left/top to right/bottom - and I think you'll be in much better shape. Right now it's all out of balance and discombobulated though.

Or something Wink

It needs to slim down a bit. Too much going on. My slow computer at work would crash if I load that page up. Sometimes, simple is better.

Also remember that for those of us on a widescreen display - the available height is significantly reduced.

Between the browser window's own header bar (title, address bar, buttons, bookmarks, and tabs), and the header of the Sierra site (search, logo, nav tabs) - you lose about 1/3 of the screen right off the bat. Once you start drilling down into the site - there's more layers of UI at the top as well.

Coming into this thread for example - the thread title "

Community Homepage Ideas

with the "post reply" button under it - is right smack in the middle/left of my screen. That's a LOT of lost real estate. Anything you can do to cut down on the height of these elements, and move the most important pieces to the top - is going to go a long way to their being used.

I mean think about it - Most of the stuff people ask how to do in chat, is linked to at the bottom of every single page on the site. Yet nobody even knows it's there. Why do you think that is?

I hate seeing chatboxes on the homepage so I always end up closing the chatbox so it's best to keep the chatbox off the homepage.
Sessions sucks hairy monkey balls, the end.
