I'm planning a trip in March and have narrowed it down to the Park City/Salt Lake Area or the Breckenridge/Keystone area. So far it looks like the Salt Lake resorts have received a good deal more snow. My question is this. How do you guys judge a resort's snow? I've been looking mainly at Base-levels but I'm not entirely sure that's the best way to go. It seems to me like more rugged mountain such as Jackson Hole would need more snow than a gladed mountain. Of course I realize predicting snow between now and March is impossible and things can change quickly but it seems to me that a big base now increases the likely hood that snow will still be around in Mid-March. I'd like to get some perspective from you guys that have lived out in the mountains. It's tough to judge this stuff when your a hobby boarder living in the deep south.

the best judge is up to date info. if you plan a trip for march right now, all you can base it on is whats happened so far. it could be horrible when you get there. hopefully it wont be, but you really dont know.
best you can do that i can think of is talk to people from the area who actually ride a lot and have been for years, see what its typically like, get their info on what its like when its been worse, etc etc etc. and in the end, just hope for the best. |

just to warn you that the snow may be icy and hard when you get there. So when you fall it may hurt your butt a lot!
I've gone to vermont in late march before and the snow was very hard the first 2 days. The third day, it was groomed the night before so I got lucky

I would judge by weather forecasts because a resort can get 10 feet of snow in a week. Also come out to snowflex in virginia whenever you get the chance this summer it is well worth your time.

If you're looking for powder, you just gotta wait for the time to come and check snow reports.
If not, then I don't really know what to look for. Make sure it isn't raining.. |

If you don't have the option of planning a trip only a week out from leaving then give snowfall averages a good look in. places with 400+ inches would be pretty reliable for a bit of powder over a holiday of longer than 2 weeks, but then again you could luck out. A friend hit Whistler mid January and got an entire week of rain top to bottom, go figure...

look for amount of snowfall and forecast. lots of snowfall = powder days and snowy days :D

March is the snowiest month for pretty much all resorts in the Western US. It is also the time of year that the snow pack is reaching near 100% of it's maximum (happens in April in Colorado) depth. So the base will be there at that time.
I'd say go to where you are going to get the best bang for your buck. My guess is that it'll probably be Salt Lake, but there are some pretty attractive packages for Breck/Keystone out there. Big storms are not uncommon at all in March for both places. Utah tends to get a bit more, while temps are generally colder in Colorado preserving the snow for longer. It's looking to be a La Nina season which favors both spots. Generally the best seasons in the Rocky Mountains are La Nina years. |

I could tell you when to come to Utah but, I don't want to draw attention to it. I like having the resort to myself when the place is getting nuked.

The snow in Utah is dryer because of the humidity. The dryer the snow, the fluffier and lighter it is. This means you get more float and face shots. Because of the altitude and climate, it makes for literally some of the best snow on earth. And if you hit it on a powder day, you'll never forget it. I would recommend Snowbird or Park City if you are considering Utah.

I really do not believe the snow is drier in Utah. The moisture content is quite similar in both Colorado and Utah. The average altitude of the resorts is very similar (if not higher in CO) and they are both located mid-continent within the rocky mountains. Here's a great reference
