I took my nephew and niece snowboarding for the first time a few weeks ago. Sat down and watched these vids with them before we hit the mountain and I think it really helped. Nice stuff, Doug!

some of the most high quaility vids out ther and love the soundtrack.
maybe some more about goggles, layers and jacket material and stuff like that. Also add more stuff like how to skate, get on ski lift, doing heel slide(think that wuts it's called) basically complete guide to snowbarding for noobs. When i started learning more about snowboarding i was searching everywhere for this stuff. youtube, fourms, everywhere. I demand more vids from SS!!! |

^^ slow down SeaBiscuit.. skating is not really a must so a video for it is not really necessary and its also to basic to actually make a video for.
And getting on a ski lift? are you serious? don't mean to be an a-hole, but if you don't know how to get on a ski lift, you really shouldn't be snowboarding/skiing at all. Getting off a ski lift can be somewhat difficult.. i see alot of good riders get nervous and fall getting off the ski lift. |

I think you'd be surprised at the number of people who don't know how to get on a lift properly, whether it's sitting, or even keeping their tips up. I've seen people catch boards quite a bit actually. Everyone has to learn somewhere, and videos may help alleviate any nervousness or first time jitters of someone just learning.

Funny story about my first lift ride,
My wife and I were at Copper with some friends who were teaching us the basics about snowboarding, my wife was terrified about getting off the lift, we hadnt even snowboarded yet. We get to the towards the top of the lift and our friend was running down the what to do's. Lift gets to the top my wife and I push off the chair and grab each other, I felt like I was about to fall so I pushed off her and knocked her down, then hit her in the head with my board lol. The rest of the group was ahead of us and got it on video, it was classic, all you hear is her yell out "ouch" lol.

Worst I've seen was someone just about to unload off the lift and fell off about 5 feet too soon. Beginners should take some time on the flats to get a feel for the board. The vids help too.

I'm looking for it also, as I'm heading to Mammoth on the 3rd. 18" of new snow this week and counting!
I was at Sierra Summit (soon to be called China Peak again) two weeks ago, and Doug's "switch" and "180" videos were hugely helpful. I had never tried either, and by my 2nd day I was comfortably riding switch and swinging the 180s flat on the snow. Next time I'll get the courage to try them in the air. Thanks Doug and SS.com!

So when a novice snowboard moves from their heals to start a toe turn they tend to focus straight down the hill rather than across the hill off the end of the nose of the snowboard. This change in focus can lead to engaging the toe edge too early and causing a down hill edge catch and slam. Make sure to look off the nose of the snowboard and focus with your eyes around the shape of the turn that you are going to make. This along with the proper movements; moving the body towards the front of the board and flattening out the front of the board to the snow with the front foot as you guide the board into the fall line. Don't rush the turn but learn to balance as you board lines up with the fall line. From their you can start to engage your new edge and steer the board across the hill as you ride you toe edge.

Awesome video! I didn't know that the 2 legs are acting independently in the press. I always tried to lift my leg while leaning, no wonder I can't maintain the board up. Going to try it this weekend

yes, a much waited video, should've been a part where you show how to spin while pressing. but i still have to learn to press higher on flat ground because my presses while riding is pretty low as if im not tail riding at all. And i have a soft board for pressing, am i suppose to slightly ollie and lift up the nose as much as needed and put a lot of weight on the back of the board?

Hey Doug.... by watching this video I figured my my ollies were not poping as high! Basically, I was "not" fully extending the back leg! Thnx.
The question is the mechanics of the motion... by extending the back leg, wouldn't that keep the board (back) pressed on the snow still? What are the exact body MOVEMENTS done before lifting the the back leg? The steps are:
1. Lean forward
2. Pull up the front leg while keeping backfoot down
3. ?
4. Extend the back leg to get the pop out of the board.
5. Land balanced
That little 3rd move is what I am missing to fully & properly extend the leg and get the perfect max pop out of my ollie.
Thnx in advance. I'll be out this Sunday to try it. Hope to read your reply before then.
Cheers...
