Hey y'all,

How's things, long time lurker, first time poster. :P

Just need some local opinions regarding going to NZ this August. Got a mate who's going 11~19th Aug, and I'm hoping to hook up with him but spend a longer amount of time there.

The questions I've got are: Do I go there earlier (start of Aug,) or stay there longer, or at that time does it make not difference... speaking of which, when is the best time for snow in NZ? July or Aug? I know it goes until about Sept, but I hear it may get slightly slushy then...?

Also, looking at going to Queenstown and Christchurch... I have some like discount vouchers for staying at... Mercure Queenstown... is that like close to most places? Or does it matter much where you go?

Also is it the same for Christchurch.... any reccomendations? I was told the going gets pretty good in the Christchurch, esp around the private/club fields....

Guys, thanx for any advice you've got (can you tell I'm a n00b to NZ snow? =P )

Hey mate,

Yeh July/Aug its all pretty good riding wise even a bit of June sometimes. Queenstown is a really easy place to get around and it is an awesome place to spend a week or more just having a great time. There is so much you can do its not funny!

The Mercure Queenstown, um from what i remember it is just a little drive from town centre up on the hill. Its a main road that has a heap of big resorts on it.

Christchurch wise i have only spent 1 night there but you are right that it has an awesome night scene. Loved it but i couldn't tell you about any good joints to stay. :S

Im sure there are others on here that could give you more details about QT, just thought id add my share!

2 cents -

Not sure about the place you mentioned down in Queenstown as I haven't been done there in a few years but it's a pretty easy to get around if you have a car (but also most things in walking distance if neeeeed be). There are some good resorts in that area so you'll have a lot of fun.

Christchurch, well you'll have to travel a bit to hit the mountains around that area but there are some def nice fields. Check out snow.co.nz and have a look at some of the fields around the place :)

Dude, hire a campervan...get a 4 or 6 person with your mate, you'll have a blast and get to see some wicked territory.  You're allowed to drive up to the fields most days, unless it's windy.  You can then check out the club fields too, and get to see some scenery in between.

They're cheap in the winter too...  the camp ground in Wanaka is in the middle of town, as is Methven.  Dunno about Queenstown as I reckon it's way to touristy and avoid it.

The vans have electric heaters and the camp grounds cost around $15 a night.

Mecure Queenstown is not really walking distance to town but is one of the main pickup/dropoff points I believe when arranging snowbus transport.  If you were having dinner in town, you'd probably wanna get a taxi back though unless you're hiring a car, then it's really only a couple mins drive.

I went about the same time last year and there was a dump of snow the week before and the week after, i'd probably go before in early August if I had the choice.

Go early and start off in Christchurch and hire a car then you can drop by the mountains near wanaka on your way to Queenstown.

if it's the Mercure Resort on Sainsbury Road then it's in Fernhill, which is about three quarters of an hours slog to the centre of town. If it's the Grand Mecure on Thompson St (unlikely), then it's less than 5 mins

July was great last year but generally speaking August and September see the highest avg snow depths

Sweet.. thanx for the heads up.. the other places we're looking at staying would be the Arrowfields Aparments, Breakfree the point, Breakfree the waterfront and Peppers Beacon as well as the Q1 apartments..... I mean, if you can get them for cheap then ... why not? =)

Prolly would end up in a hostel or something tho'....
Plus I can't wait to go to Ferg's. =P

Is it Fruit Elixir?

Grunge, it all depends what you're after. If you want to get smashed and try and pull Swedish girls then book a hostel like Southern Laughter. If you're after a flashy pad for you and you're missus then something like Garden Court would probably be more up you're street. I mentioned Reavers Lodge in another thread because it's neither on nor the other, but the heating is good, they have a hot tub and they're close to the centre of town.

Now see, if I knew about the Swedish girls, I wouldn't have let the missus tag along.

Naah.. really we just want value for money, theres 6 of us and I'm the most experienced of them which amounts to almost zip, and I've got these voucher things from a timeshare company that allow pretty much $30~60 a nite on most places including nice ones which is why I figger why not... I'm partial to getting a campervan and doing that but I got outvoted on that... (more like ganged up!!!) maybe next time...

Again, thanx for the help guys.... bottom line for me is, I'm there to board and enjoy myself, and as long as I get a good sleep anywhere, I'm okay. =)
