Has anybody ever been to an REI used sale?
I just found some all white 09' Burton Motos for $19.85 size 13 d@mn near mint condition besides some minor scuffs. The return reason simply says "too soft" returned 1/24/10. I have a pair of 2010 forums. Should I try to flip these on ebay or just have an extra pair? Is it common to have two pairs of boots or just one?

That's a pretty good score. I'd probably just keep the second pair because eBay is a royal PITA.

Yea i saw jackets but none my size. yea breaks i think i am gonna keep them, i would only be able to sell them for maybe 45. I wasn't sure if people kept more than 1 pair of boots per season.

REI is just like an all outdoor activity store, i guess you can say. Its not on their website you have to actually go into the store. They have this type of sale a couple times per year. I stumbled onto one of the sales while looking for snowboard gear before hearing of sierra. I signed up for their membership it's like $20 lifetime and their return policy is 100% satisfaction if you have the membership. So yea to clarify you have to go in-store and the items vary at each store. If there's one in your area just sign up for email updates and you'll get a notice of any future sales.

its called the scratch and dent sale. all of the stuff is like returned, or aesthetically a little weird, but works fine, and you can get some sweet deals. they have a sale every few months on saturday mornings, just go to REI and ask them when the next one is.

Yeah, the REI garage sales are often a treasure trove.  I've picked up some >$100 sleeping mats for $10, some basically new cross country skis for <$50, internal frame backpack for <$20.  I've seen some >$1000 skis going for $150 and other crazy things like that too.  REI lets people return for any reason whatsoever, so often times, the gear at the garage sales is essentially unused because people just don't like the color or the fit doesn't work for them.  You just have to be a member to take advantage.

Yeah, REI can afford to do these sales because most people buy things at a keystone markup. I think every product(back from when I worked there) is marked up at least 100% from their cost. That's why they have their lax return policy and that's why they close this stuff out so cheap. The B-25 sales are great. You can get some good stuff for dirt cheap.

For those who don't know, this is without a doubt REI's best sale of the year.

I need to get over to the local shop and see if they have any stuff worth snagging. Last year my buddy ended up with some boots and all sorts of other stuff at Sierra-like sale prices.

You talking about the garage sale that REI has, or a different sale?  Around philly REI has garage sales about every other month or so where basically they sell all of the returns they've stored up for super discounts.  You have to be an REI member to buy from it ($20 one time fee) and usually there's a line outside the store starting the night before.  Feb. 09 i got a pair of size 11 Vans 2xboa boots for $60 in perfect condition (retailed for $300) and flowm11's in good condition for $40 (retailed for like $200).  I've moved on from the flows, but for my first setup I couldn't beat the price....even here.

Since then it's been hit or miss.  You have to get lucky, but I've seen people walk out with bikes, canoes, ski/snowboards, all sorts of camping gear, clothes....really it's a mixed bag what they'll have...boots/shoes are sold too.  I got a pair of rollerblades for $40 last nov.

It's worth it for the $20 fee....especially since that also gets you a store credit every year.  Every item you buy from there at full price when you use your membership account nets you a 10% dividend at the end of the year.  Come march (actually just a couple days ago) they mail you your credit from the previous year.

If you shop at REI even a little bit then it's worth having.

Yeah, REI is one of the last stores that really stands by its customers. I'll have to check out the "used" sale, too bad theres only 1 store in Socal that has boarding equipment.

I'm actually amazed at the condition of some of the gear they sell at the sale.  Some is in perfect shape, barely worn while other gear looks 10 years old (sometimes is) and i've seen them sell shoes with mud still on them.  Pretty cool that they accept returns on stuff like that and pretty cool that they offer it up for sale again.

You could use REI as gear rental haha!.... i had a friend that kept buying and returning the Thule Rocket Box carrier when we went snowboarding.  He bough and returned it on a monthly basis.  Kind of funny.

If you mean kinda funny like your friend is a total female hygene product that drives the price of items up because they abuse the system, then yeah, kinda funny.

A REI buy and return strategy isn't funny... it is weak. Falls into that category of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
