That's because you haven't lived in the desert Wink  Anyway, you can already ski in the desert here in the US http://www.skithelemmon.com.  Just only during the winter :)  And of course it's nothing spectacular

I think they would need to have a great park at one of these indoor places, otherwise that place would be so boring.  It'd be like riding the bunny slope all day.  Which I guess has its appeal to n00bs and tourists, but what about the rest of us.

Having said that, I'd love to see someone open one here.  I'd gladly  take a few days during the summer to hone my park skills.  Suppose I could also head up there to the NW, but where's the convenience in that Tongue

Seen some videos about it seemed neat. I just don't know if i would go there instead of a real mountain. It's cool in all if you can drive there but it seems like you'll be missing half the experience. Moutain views, sun, snow, lot more spacious.

I think it must be pretty bad ass to live there though. I wouldn't mind visiting. The buildings and how the city has grown it such a short time is amazing. Like the tallest building in the world, the man made islands, that boat hotel, the shark tank, lot of interesting things.

How is it like living there?

I was watching one of those discovery shows on the building of the Indoor mtn. Its insane how much work went into it. If I ever go there I would definitely try it out. The technology that went into building it was incredible. The main slab came in one giant piece that had to be slowly lifted into the correct angle. It took a few days if I remember right to lift into place. Oil money is buying a lot over there!

It certainly is interesting, technologically, given its location.  From the web site:

FEATURES

- 85 meters high (approximately 25 stories) and 80 meters wide
- 5 different runs of varying difficulty and length, longest run of 400 meters
- Full capacity of 1500 guests
- Freestyle zone
- Permanent: 1/4 pipe snowboard area
- 3,000m² Snow Park with a snow cavern
- Quad chairlift, tow lift and flying carpets
- Mountain resort theme

i saw on the amazing race. they featured a crappy straight downward slope for sledding.

the park doesn't seem that big. it would probably take too much energy to maintain the ice. in another travel article i read, the author said that the locals are merely content to be in the cold or even ride the lift, let alone ski or snowboard. it make sense because to these people, they never seen a lift before.

it doesn't exactly matter what the locals think or do, they're only 15% of the population.

it's a great alternative. i find it ok. problem is that it's too icy at times. but works fine when needed.

I think it looks like a really nice alternative to not riding at all during the summer months. There was talk about putting in something like that around here several years ago. Not sure what the status is on it, but it most likely will never happen.

Not really imo. You could hotlap the crap out of that park :)

And Vegas was supposed to get one as of 3 years ago. There was a website n everything, it was going to be a waterpark/resort/indoor snowdome, but I think it got abondoned b/c of the economy.

well like i said, it's a good alternative, definately not a first choice.
Yeah, this thing doesn't come cheap. they charge you like 80$ for 2-4 hours of riding, whether you use their gear or not. I have my own gear and i have been trying to work something out with them to just charge me for entrance.
So far, it's not looking too good.

I've been there, its really nice!the snows actually very good as well. plus you get a free pair of ski-Dubai gloves, they're nothing special, just a simple cotton pair of gloves but its definitely worth trying out if your ever in Dubai

So I'm guessing that it takes about 20 seconds to go from top to bottom?!! Haha! I'd rather strap on a board and ride down the sand dunes for free.

Haha, definitely not. It's just a novelty for people who can afford it.

It's only cool cause the rest of Dubai is so hot. The runs are short. But if that's all you had nearby then by. All means. But if your flying there to ride go somewhere else.

Just tossing this out there.

If I ever go to Dubai I'd be more inclined to go dune surfing than snow surfing.  Makes more sense to me.
