This tends to happen to me a lot. I usually struggle a bit before I can stand up and ride away again. Any tips or suggestions on how you guys get out?

step one: quit whining about being stuck. here in the Midwest we dont get that experience
step two: stay calm i went to utah when they were getting dumped on. week ago. week and a half...if you freak out. you can sink farther. other than that it sucks getting stuck and having to walk out of a bowl |

Highly agree.. Some runs are just not meant to be tackled on deep powder days. you will get stuck no matter how damn tempting that powder looks.

If you're stuck, you just have to unstrap and walk it out. Make sure to keep a handle on your board to prevent it from flying down the mountain! My friend got stuck in the pow and unstrapped and tried to lodge his board in the snow, but it got loose and slid away. He had to dig himself out and then go chase down his board.

gotta unbind...yeah and use your board to dig yourself out. Takes a lot energy, but again, if you're in pow...ride it like you stole it cause it's not like you're going to bust your tail bone faling on ice.

Take your time and don't rush it. You're already at a higher altitude, so your lungs are already working harder to distribute oxygen just doing nothing.
Also, avoid runs with lots of shallow/flat angles. There are few spots at Meadows that I love after some snow, but when I eat it (80% of the time) digging yourself out and getting moving again is a huge bitch. |

Umm yeah I just had my first Real Powder day this past Monday and I sunk like a rock! Luckily I was with E13 who pretty much pulled my @ss out and kept me stable till I was ready to go again! I definitely recommend bring a friend like that along with ya. . . although a guy holding up another guy might not be quite the same!

Make sure that tree isn't full of snow, nor does it have a tree well, otherwise you're in a much worse situation. :-)

you need the right board and the right steepness to help avoid sinking in the first place When I fall, I just kinda roll around to pack the snow down and end up on my stomach, which is the easier side from which to push back up. It's not pretty, but works without unstrapping ...and don't call it "pow pow", or you'll get barbed wire |

Haul ass through powder and stick to the steeps. Slashing through powder is tons of fun with good speed, but if you lack speed it will be exhausting.
If you fall and can't get going again, then unstrap. Get your board to the surface and use it to climb out of the powder. Putting most of your weight onto your board will help you climb out as it spreads your weight onto a larger surface area you are less likely to sink. Trying to walk around you will sink right away and tire yourself out. Keeping your hands and weight over your board you should be able to move around (you will look stupid all bent over but at least you will be on the surface). Get to a firm area or a steep area wher you can get going again and you're off. |

Using a tree is not recommended. If you sink into a tree well you will either stuck much deeper and in a potentially life threatening situation.

yeah, the best thing you can probably do is unstrap in try to get out. My friend and i got stuck, i unstrapped right away and got back to the slope in less than 5 minutes. My friend, on the other hand refused to unstrap, tried to get out for 15 minutes, ad eventually unstrapped and got out.

never slow down
also, if you have friends that are skiers don't follow them on powder days through the trees. it'll end up getting you stuck while they push out of it

i always end up spending the time to pack some snow down for leverage to get back up, only to fall back down 10' later and do it all over again...oh well, at least i get a good workout.

uh, the whole point is not to sink in powder. You basically want to float on top of it...unless you're landing a cliff drop

Keep your rate of speed up and you'll hopefully get stuck in less pow.
Worst case scenario is unclip, board dig out, then go get an adult beverage. |

Now seriously: 1. If pow is about knee deep - try to get up and ride away as usual - just put your board under your body try to transfer body weight over the board and ride away(you can prop with hand on your board or grab your toe edge). 2. If pow is deeper and ^^^ doesn't work better unstrap than beat up some snow to make enough space to strap again and you are good to go. ![]() |

when the pow is deep, go steep, that black or double black diamond run is where you want to go! also speed is your friend, don't traverse steep runs go down the fall-line the pow will keep your speed in check. in the flats keep up your speed and stay in others tracks to get back to the groomed sections.

Try rolling onto your toe-side. My wife struggles to get up in pow, and says its way easier for her that way.

Avoid low angle/flat runs
Unstrap and walk out if it is not too deep. Do not lose grip of your board. If it's deep, sometimes you can unstrap and lay on the board and paddle/swim out with your arms like you were on a sled or surfboard. This helps distribute your weight across a greater surface area (like walking with snowshoes vs regular shoes). Avoid being too close to trees with low skirts and tree wells -- very dangerous Always ride with a friend when there is lots of snow or carry a 2-way radio. |

Ahhh POW days gotta love them!!
This year we had a epic pow day riding pow up to my knees on groomers and up to my waist in the trees! Its was sooo much fun I get pow highs :) If I get stuck I try to crawl makes it a little easier IMO.

the only reason you should be getting is stuck is because you've hit a sizable drop off and tried a front flip and misjudged the landing, mmm love the soft landing in the pow...
