I remember going to Mammoth during Super Bowl weekend when the storm came and we were waist deep in fresh pow. We all fell down at one point and couldn't get up so we had to take off our straps and packed the snow around us so we can strap back in and get back up without sinking.

If you can manage to pack down the snow around you, I find it easier to get up from your toe edge. Being on your heel edge seems to make me sink in more

If you're getting stuck go faster and if you can't go faster you're on the wrong run, simple as that.

Don't sweat the technique.

Get ready to sweat a lot when getting stuck in powder. Not to fun of an experience.

Whenever I get stuck in powder, I usually just try to get into a position where I'm lying on my back . . . . then I just start making snow angels

we very rarely get that much powder but i have experienced it a couple of times. if im ever stuck ill normally just unclip and walk it out. ive never experienced being deep enough to have to use my board to crawl out but ill have to remember that if im ever lucky enough to get overseas where you guys get some serious powder. |

If you do find yourself deep down in the floaty-ground-
* DON'T PANIC- flailing and hollering are going to tire you out and you need all the energy you can muster, mister. * Unless you are within a few feet of firm snow, which you could boardwalk or ollie to, unclip. * Distribute your weight over as large an area as possible- if the snow is toooo deep, keep on your board like a surfboard, if its shallower, surrender your dignity and crawl out on all fours, with your weight spread over your forearms and legs beneath the knee. * If in a sink hole or bowl, use your board edge as an ice axe and pull yourself up by the bindings. Boom, walk out with the nonchalance of Bond and get you a martini. |

Well when your riding, you just want to lean back and ride your tail so you don't stop, and if you realize that is a pretty flat run, don't make any turns that will slow you down, and just try to get back on the run.

I used to climb out of those situations because I couldnt be bothered undoing my bindings because they were hard to put on. I had C60's back then with Burton Driver X Boots. I'm a US 8.5 but I can fit into large bindings? I usually wear Medium bindings. What do you guys think? Are bigger bindings also okay? Sorry for going a bit off topic.

Usually i take off my board and press all my weight on to it in order to stay up above the snow then once i get to a place where the mountain steepens then i strap back in by pulling myself back up on the board and going fast down the mountain keeping weight on my tail

I've never been in a position like this :(. Most I got was like a foot of powder. That was so much fun. I love carving into the fresh pow.

i gather all the snow i can around me and push down, creating a sort of base to sit on.... unstrap, then hike it out... i hate it so now when i know im hitting pow, i keep my speed up, nose up, and ride it out, no matter how sketchy it gets |

It's hard to keep your nose up though because it gets tiring. |

If you're riding off-piste or backcountry just make sure you know where your going if your in real deep powder. Sometimes the best powder runs are off-piste but if you get stuck it can be dangerous, exhausting, and really time consuming trying to get out. Its happened to me a few times including one time in France when we thought an unmarked run reconnected at the bottom but it went into a flat riverbed. We had to hike all the way back up hill through the woods in waist deep powder.
If your in knee deep powder you basically have to spread out your wait to get out or else you'll sink so deep you cant move. Try putting some weight on your board or crawl out. |

Haven't had the opportunity to ride in knee-deep powder yet, but maybe will get the chance this winter :). Will keep all these tips in mind, and try not to get stuck in the first place.

everything has its price...
getting stuck is sometimes part of a powder day specially for those looking for un-toched around unfamiliar terrain small price for a big reward. for me, if i am stuck in deep powder it means it a great day for sure! |

don't bother wasting your energy trying to get up or dig out while strapped in. Just unstrap, roll out, get back a few feet to your own track to strap back in if possible. Or else just surf it sit it down to a steeper area before restrapping.

we never get knee deep powder in southern california, but one time i was in mammoth and it's the first time i ride powder and so much fun.
i basically just put my weight on my back foot and lift the board so it can float on the powder |

If you're still on a slope and not on flat ground. Do an ollie and lean a back a little. If it is flat ground or a trough, then unstrap and walk out, and as other people say hold a firm grip on your snowboard.

Avoid falling down by setting your bindings back (nothing too drastic), either both or your rear binding. This will help keeping your nose afloat and will make shifting your weight easier.
If you get a lot of powder days, invest in a board specifically for powder.
