    Posted: Apr/13/2010 at 4:44pm
Hey guys,

The snow season is creeping upon us and I can not wait to try out my new board on the slopes but....the difficult question now is that which mountain to try it on. I have been on Falls Creek and Mt Buller but out of the two Falls Creek's runs are mind blowing while Mt Buller was just medioka. Any other suggestions and when is a good time to go? Went last year during August but by then all the snow was melting so it was slushy and lots of snowstorms.

If you're only looking at Vic resorts and have progressed beyond green runs, head to Hotham.  Falls is for family's, Buller is for Volvo Volvo or Merc drivers with Melbourne FC stickers on their plates and Hotham is for people who actually want to rip some awesome terrain.

Only slightly generalising though...  LOL

I hear the best things about Hotham, but I've never made it there myself.

If you're going for anything 5+ days, take the above advice and go to NZ

NZ is only cheaper if you do NZ on the cheap and Australia staying on the snow. Its not comparing apples with apples.

etm, not true.

aud/nzd = 1.3

lift tickets there are like 2/3 the price here.

if it's 5 days, that's like free reeturn flights to christchurch almost.

I have boarded at Hotham mostly with one trip to Buller during a complete white out.
Never been to Falls - but I will do so this year.

HOTHAM absolutely rocks - but then I am biased.

assuming different snow levels for each, the best mountain will be the one with the most snow!

have been to buller / falls / hotham

i'd say falls and hotham are both nice, different in its own way

Did a level 5 lesson at falls, the instructor brought us (3 boarders) through the trees, blacks, park, natrual jumps and drops; now that was FUN since he knew where the good terrain was

the terrain parks are pretty decent at buller i thought, havnt been to any other vic field though, if your looking at nsw, thredbo = long runs, whereas mt perisher = shorter runs but more options and better terrain parks

hmm it sounds everyone has high praise for mt hotham. Guess its the place to go this season. Would of loved to go NZ but not quite sure where to head to. Heard Auckland isnt that great and Christchurch. And heard people telling me mix reviews on how expensive or cheap it is.

Also that lesson sounds awesome at falls... do you remember how much it was or what it was called?

I boarded Hotham all last season and it was pretty sick, if there is enough snow and Keoghs/Orchord lifts are open then ya will have a sick time. have been to falls probably about 12 days all up and love it there too. pretty much if there is enough snow ya will have a blast at both, but id say hotham is better for some rippin terrain.

I like falls for its simplicity to get too, with good cover of snow and runs to to suit everyone. Perisher is harder to get to, although the ski tube is simple but costs, Perisher has plenty of runs, I agree even when crowded you can get a decent run.
Thats my two cents worth!

I'm from Canada and just went to Whistler in March.  I am actually thinking of doing a snowboarding trip somewhere in the southern hemisphere as December is a long wait for the next snowboarding season here in Canada...

How does the Australian resorts compare to Whistler?  I know they won't be as high but how's the snow?  looking for good back country and or ungroomed type runs...

Actually, Hotham is shit.  You don't want to go there...

Part of the appeal is so few people than Buller on the same day.  I'd recommend you all head to Buller.

dont come to australia if thats what you want to ride, better off in NZ like theyve said.

alright here is my break down

Buller is great if your centralized in melbourne it easy to get too and if you're worri3ed about ti being packed head up mid week there qwill e half as many people there

Hotham is a good fun resort, bigger vic mountain so more snow with some pretty steep and decent runs

Falls - i personally dont like falls because its where i tore ligaments in my ankle. i had shit weather there when i was there too. but i can see it definatley holds the rep for Family Mountain has some pretty easy runs and some pretty advanced stuff like Ruined Castle.

Baw Baw, this would have to be the most unapreeciated mountain in australia, most of you would have seen me harp on about this joint. ill clear it up now ITS CHEAP! its one of the more poorer resorts in Australia, its samll so not tons of snow, it isnt steep. about now you're thinking :this joint sounds crap" but if you board and you like to jib around a little bit of cross country exploration and hit natural features this is where it is at! they have tree rides, big air bag, tons of features that are made from bent over trees ect. word of warning - they only have tbars and pommers but suprisingly they are really easy to ride here, Bullers tbars are BALLS

ill be spending most of my time at baw baw and buller.

good tiems will be had

so if you like bombing runs and getting fast ild go Hotham or Falls, but Falls has alot of families and beginers so you will probably collect someone.

day trippers meblourn based Buller - mid week is good-  uni students tuesday is your day! like $50 something lift tickets

stuff around with mates on a board - baw baw (pick your day but because snow has its moments there [but this resort is super cheap like 60 full price lift tickets on weekend])

never been to perisher or thredbo sorry :(

Hotham is best by far with a fair bit of challenging terrain and free cat skiing.

I believe that is the general consensus from most Aussie here. =)
Nicer snow and cheaper costs are the general reason why.

Yep, i reckon any more than 4-5 days in a row and NZ works out to be the better option.  Plus you can get duty free grog which is just the icing on the cake!  Wink

only ridden perisher and thredbo. i prefer perisher more so because i have ridden there for 4 seasons and have more people to ride with. thredbo definitely has steeper terrain but less of it. perisher has a huge area to explore and i always seem to find some sweet natural terrain everywhere (im a skateboard influenced snowboarder). parks are pretty good in both i know that perisher has 4 parks (baby park, 2 mid parks and slopestyle XL park) one boarder x and a superpipe which gets cut frequently. no matter where you go find a good crew to ride with and you will have a blast

I disagree. I loved falls compared to Hotham. There's some really nice runs at Falls which are not very wide, tree's on either side heaps of stuff to jib and nice and twisty. Hotham has some huge wide open runs and I can see it being good if you've got the fresh snow to go with it.

Jarryd are there any cheap lift ticket days to Baw Baw for tertiary students? I know its only $60 so cheap already but just asking hehe... You make it sound pretty good, i don't know how good i'd feel about t-baring / pommeling up to the top every run though...

Im with spud...we went their for the nationals for inter schools and it was flat...their parks were awesome, but the snow was like riding your board through mashed potato, it was sluggish and boring. But then again im biased cos i live at the base of Buller...I skiied hotham and it was pretty awesome, would like to get back there on a board this time

Mate, you want to check out New Zealand's Canterbury club fields. If you're into serious backcountry, the experience will blow you away.
