We all understand that it is a stereotype asians can't drive.  It wasn't meant to be slanderous, but funny instead.  They also toss up peace signs and smile in almost every picture.  See Sierrapalooza 2010 as a reference.

When I first read the title of the thread.. I thought it said that we "can't" drive.. needless to say I was a bit chapped Angry.  However, watching that video and rereading the title.. I was totally laughing LOL.  That girl needs one of these T-shirts.

I don't think its that asians are 'bad drivers', so much as it is their depth perception is often poor, which then translates to poor driving.

we'd think asians are bad drivers by the way drive here in the US. try driving in asia, we wouldn't be able to get out of the parking lot...

Doode... i am from frisco.. i know for a fact asians cannot drive.. you know who else that cannot drive?  Old white people.... You know who else?  Women of any ethnicity... the unholy trifecta would be an elderly asian woman driver.

I don't think it's only Asians...obviously...I think control freaks suck at driving...and backseat drivers...have you ever noticed that backseat drivers are usually the worst drivers themselves??? I HATE backseat drivers!

i'd have to agree...

let's say you live in russia or another location where there weren't as many asians...the number of accidents caused by another ethnic group would probably be higher :)

but i'd like to say in general california drivers are HORRIBLE :) not everyone of course but a large amount!

It maybe a Stereotype that they cant drive, its more or less a fact that they cant snowboard but will still take lessons anyway and make the instructor very irritated very quickly.

In MA old white people are the worst drivers.  They drive into Walmarts, Dunkin Donuts, liquor stores and well as people.

I think there is just a lot of people thinking that everyone else is a bad driver except for themselves.  I bet everyone here that drives breaks the law (traffic violations) everyday that they are out on the road.  Ever rolled through a stop sign?  Speeding?  Tailgating?  Unsafe lane changes?  Cell phones?

I'm not saying that I don't do this stuff... because I do.  All I'm saying is that we could all use some improvement and stop being angry at each other for driving poorly.  Make the roads safe for everyone.

wow.. how does one even respond to this type of closed minded comment?
So you're saying that unless you are inherently good at something, you shouldn't try to better yourself at it?  Sad.. just sad.

As for the "peace sign"...it's a trick of the language...holding up two fingers is sort a shorthand (punny!) representation for Japan.
ni = 2
nippon = Japan

There are other explanations as well, but have heard this one most often.

Of course azn people are good drivers... I don't know if you guys heard, but in Japan a law was just passed stating that you will be ticketed if you don't drift on every turn... Imagine how hard passing driving school would be.

stereotypes typically exist for a reason, which is that there is a lot of statistical observation to back it up.  i used to think there was truth in this stereotype based on the handful of asian drivers i saw in the predominately white town i went to school in.  once i moved to san jose, i can say in a very affirming way that asians tend to be serious lacking in the driving skill department compared with your avg driver.  is that because they tend to have more of a genetic setback (like the depth perception comment earlier) or could it be that they do not tend to take time to learn what a yield sign means and how to perform a merge?!?  who can say.  Big smile

now to be more precise, the only real ignorance here is claiming that pointing out a stereotype is racist.  there is no connection between stating common observations of the characteristics of a particular ethnic group and actually being intolerant of that race.

it is really no diff than if someone called me a racist because i said african americans tend to be dark skinned.  i'm a jew and i, along with the rest of my family, tend to get very excited about coupons and sales...coinky dink, or not?

lighten up the sensitivity meter and go take a bath in purell.

i think that the perception that asians are bad drivers is correct, when they're out of asia. they're just driving the way they drive in asia and it just happens to be a different driving style than the US. when people outside of asia go there and drive, then they would be perceived as the bad drivers, because their driving style is different.

for example, i'm an asian that grew up in the US. I drive like an american and i think i'm a pretty safe driver. i'd be perceived as a bad driver in asia because i'm trying to drive like an american in asia. i wouldn't last 5 mins without getting into an accident.

on the other hand, asians who are good drivers in asia would be preceived as bad drivers in the US, as many people have already pointed out.

it's not genetics, it's nothing physical, it's just different driving styles in different places...

LOL, everyone knows the stereotype for old asian women. Even asians agree on that. So never drive to asian malls that have grocery stores, unless you want to get bumped.

asians, if they were born outside of this country, can't drive.

women, for the most part, can't drive.

asian women, well, it sucks to be you. god bestowed you this stereotype but balanced it out by giving you the gift of 'yellow fever.'

you might not be able to drive, but at least you can get all the non asian dudes you want.

us asian guys on the otherhand... seeing one with a white girl is like spotting a unicorn eating a four leaf clover while being ridden by a chupacabra.

did i mention we have huge cocks?

another explanation I've heard is the "V" stands for victory
