    Posted: May/11/2010 at 12:10am
Well the temperature dropped dramatically this afternoon (was cold all day) - was at zero degrees when I left the mountain this afternoon at 5:30pm.

Snow forecast for this evening with flurries and falls expected tomorrow. Big smile

Intend to turn on the snow making tonight as well - so hopefully we'll see a different looking Front in the morning.

This will be my thread for the season beginning - join in to stay updated.

Thumbs Up

Yeah I work on the mountain. No natural falls - snow making went well. Temperature all day was chilly. Gloves, beanie and jacket required.

Will keep the updates coming as the falls start. The snow making is to support natural falls, also help freeze the ground to make a long lasting base.

Snow making snow is very different to natural snow. Tends to pack better.

Hopefully it will be a cracker of a season.

Just have to remember to talk to the Grooming and Slopes boys.

Do my best tomorrow ... from what I know about them you are pretty spot on with the substance. I know we just had some of ours re-done.

Looks funny seeing all the snow is discrete patches.  Will keep an eye on this thread all winter to see how my northern brethren are fairing.

You are looking for a product called High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) also referred to as Puck Board by US and Canada.

Google HDPE and you will find many suppliers. As a guide a piece that is 3m x 1.5m is worth about $450.

Go for a neutral colour or white - it will last a little longer as the UV won't be absorbed as much as a dark colour.

Hope this helps.

Working for Perisher is good ... you get to work where holiday.

Nothing is for free - but you can apply for company accommodation - it is basic, but warm and handy to Station Hotel. Includes power, heating etc.

Work for Perisher and you also get a season pass - provided you have full time employment of some type.

Just have a go - always looking for hospitality staff - great way to spend 4 months - especially if you are into boarding

There is a Perisher Valley Medical Centre and Ambulance Station in Perisher (winter only).

Full medical centre is Jindabyne and Thredbo as well.

Large Hospital in Cooma (45 minutes away).

You could try them ... find phone numbers in yellow/white pages

Don't know any cheaper options - we only by this level of product. I would contact local plastic suppliers and see if they have any off cuts. If it is for a project then any old plastic might do. Would definitely not be going with lino.

Snowmaking is building up. Some snow showers forecast early next week - but so to is rain. Here's hoping no rain or it freezes at very least.

Contact the snowsports school at a resort - they do take newbies.

Level 1 APSI is required to begin instructing wihtout supervision, you can instruct under supervision - most resorts have assessors (Perisher does) so you can learn, train and gain your level 1 during the season. The qualification is recognised world wide.

If you are going to do it - treat it seriously like a real job and you will go far.

Weather update: Cold temperatures are still consistent over night with snowguns operating. However, things are not looking to promising according to the forecast for next week. Here's hoping that the forecast showers stay away, or the temperatures drop further leading to more likely snow.

Mother nature is fickle, we will keep making snow as long as the conditions are right which is a great start to making and keeping a good base for the season.

Not much to report: SNowguns are working well and there is plenty of snow being made - 60 guns have been running regularly - nice big lump on Front Valley next to the V8.

Everyone needs to start there snow dance and make sure you get it right - there is rain forecast it needs to be turned to snow.

Drizzling tonight when I left - hopefully the made snow will hold and the rain will not be to heavy.

Post your best SNOW DANCE chant ....

Sorry all watchers - not mush different to report. Drizzling rain, cloudy ..

Can't wait until I can report 15cm of snow or any snow (apart from snowmaking) similiar to what they had at Mt Hutt ... good old Mt Shut. Always gets good snow, most of the time - accept one time I was there is 2007 I think. THey had a 30-40cm base.

Yuck - spent my time rock boarding. Has been every other time - always good for freshies.

Are you using the portable blowers in the foreground for building snow piles to be spread around?

That's correct Mark - there are some portable fan guns and also cannons plus fixed lances and fan guns at various locations which can't been seen well due to the building in the way.

Tank'donSnow,

Can you get into the park yet ? I wouldn't might driving down in the next week or so just to check the place out. Have a good day out.

Are the pub's open yet..
Does it cost to get into the national park before ski season starts ?

P.S. If you have photo's of those "whales" you talk about, can i see them

Park proper will not be open for a few weeks at least - snow dependant - if it snows will be all hands on deck to get areas groomed.

Pubs are open ... as soon as long weekend comes the park fees go up. If you are travelling by yourself recommend skitube as it is cheaper than park fees. Parking is better and easier, but early season parking is not such an issue.

Whales are just mounds of snowmaking so ... nothing brillant.

The snowmaking might allow some rails and jobs to be placed in front valley to begin with.

Hoping to give a better report next weekend.

Well we are not sure whether the serial Icing Sugar Mastermind criminal has been at Mt Perisher, or there has been a giant eating donuts and some sugar fell off ... but I can report that things did get a little dusting.

The forecast front coming through which was promising snow, is now looking like it will pass without much snowfall - weather patterns looking a lot more positive.

Well this was a light dusting overnight - the road was white (ish) from about Ski Rider ... the carpark was white ... the snow guns are working great and looking like enough man made snow opening for the long weekend.

The official word is one lift will be spinning on front valley ... not sure which one. But my guess it will be a T-bar ...

Conditions are looking great for more snowmaking - think all we can expect is some light snow falls. Nothing major as yet. Makes for a shitty start ... but all willing things will change.

I am so hoping this will all be ready! I am coming down for the Festival this opening weekend with the girl and some mates. So looking forward to even having some basic front valley runs.

Either that or just drink and listen to hippy music. Both acceptable!

OK Snowfans - it si on for the weekend - all be it restricted but there will be some chance to have some fun on the white stuff

Snowgroomer (old oiler, but goodie) gets to pushing some of the whales round on front valley .... approach to V8 load is done.

On leaving today - already at zero - some of the guns ran all day - good quantity of man made snow on the hill

Forecast overnight is for low temperatures (winds are questionable) with chance of some flurries turning to bliazzard conditions in the morning - the rest of the week good low temps at night for snowmaking and low day temps.

Should be set up well for the opening week ... not a whole lot of terrain, but a enough for a quick fix on the white stuff.

very likely the V8 will be open ... possibly even open to midstation ... depends on how things go tonight and the next few days - confidence is fairly high within mountain staff.

the good news is we are open ClapClapClapClap

most others not open ... don;t forget the music festival is on as well ...
