I think the most important thing is to be balanced right at the top of the jump, pop off in a controlled manner at the crest, and spot your landing as soon as possible!!!

I think the worst thing you can do is sit at the top of the jump and stare at it for a long time. You end up freaking yourself out and messing up. Just don't think too hard, trust your skills, and go for it. Let your buddies wait around at the top thinking how good you are.

i wouldn't say waiting up there and planning it out is a bad idea. I also prefer doing a speed check once on a new jump before attempting it. Watching others and how they do it, can also help.

Smaller jumps make me nervous. Over shooting hurts more than screwing up a landing.

commitment is the most important thing, hesitation will be your enemy and cause you to wipe out!
you need you hit it solid and make sure to land solid anything in between adds spice into the mix and will cause problems.

what i always say is " if you start it, end it" meaning if you start going towards a huge jump, dont female genitals out and just jump out of the way, go off the jump and do what you want to so and hope you wont fall haha

COMMITTMENT IS EVERYTHING. OVERCOME that fear and you got it. of course there is more to it. you definitely have to visualize what you wanna do and committt to it...just see yourself doing it. as far as jibbing....i jib the whole mountain regardless if im on or off the park

WHEN YOU GO OFF A JUMP, Just jump and land how you normally would...bend knees and extend when jumping and when you are about to land bend knees to cushion your landing.. |

Thats how i learned...of course there are many ways...but everytime i would jump i would always wipe out on the landing...Until a friend told me when i hit the jumps just bend your knees... like you would, coming down from any jump. BENT KNEES is IMPORTANT FOR LANDING...DONT THINK JUST DO IT...TOO MUCH THINKING OF WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO MESSES WITH YOUR HEAD AND YOU TEND TO PSYCH YOURSELF OUT...ALL EXPERIENCES...JUST DO IT...BEST WAY TO LEARN

When you are working on your spins make sure that you are spinning straight off the top of the jump. This gives you more momentum to get more rotation.

Lol, very true u HAVE to finish what you started!!!! even though i'm not 15 and a young skateboarder anymore i still just zip through the parks if there is a lot of ppl at 1 jump i might slow down but if i see everyone is waiting i usually just past them by and go first, quick decision just like how jumping is, because if im gonna wait and be polite im gonna get myself scared i cant be scared at 24 if i am i'm gonna hurt myself. Sounds kind of dumb but its totally the way you need to do things, you should know the park and plan what you're gonna do on the long trip up the lift. when you start to go dont stop.

"Ok, don't slow down now. This is a great speed, approach is looking great. You're almost there! Focus! Now fly! OH crap DON'T POP THIS YOU WILL SERIOUSLY DIE OMMMMG!" Then realize I jumped 3 meters in the air and landed on the flat and think shtooking IDIOT, THIS WAS A SMALL JUMP, DO BETTER ON THE NEXT!".

i dont think about it at all... i just go for it.. do my trick land with steez and ride away... then you look back as your riding away and realize it was a great jump.. its really all about you concentration and mind set, if you think your gonna fall most likely you will fall and vise versa. also, and easier way to handle the jump is to block everything out and dont think about anything, this comes with practice and time, but its probably the easiest way to take on an intimidating jump.

Takeoff is definitely the hardest part of a jump for mentally. On the other hand when you are just flowing through a line especially in deep powder and you aren't thinking about it anymore all goes great!

I learned it the hard way.. I think the most important thing is not trying to jump vertically at the lip of the jump. Many people try SO HARD to jump straight up when they are taking off, and this severely throws off your balance and you can't stay compact in the mid air. If so, you won't be able to do any grabs since you can't bring your knees to your chest... and you will fly very awkwardly and hence the painful landing.
Next time, Just try to do a very small ollie. Just think that you are doing a small ollie. but in fact, it will be pretty big when you are actually jumping. |

you don't need to ollie off jumps. especially for beginners. Ollie can be added later to get more air. Ollie is one more thing to worry about when jumping. Better to get comfortable with takeoff, the trick, and landing... THEN add in the ollie. |

personally i think a lot of its just procedural memory. once your familiar with the approach and the launch its almost second nature, i guess the cognition is in spotting and stomping.

I have trouble with nerves before big jumps. I just need to commit to the jump. Confidence is the key to everything: picking up girls, hitting a shot at the buzzer, doing well on tests, public speaking, and landing tricks.
I finally got up the nuts to do a 30 footer last year and as I stood up, some idiot with a rental and dreads sticking up through his helmet like a mohawk cut in front of me.
He didn't speed check at all and over shot the landing by about 15 feet. As soon as he hit the lip his feet went sky-high and he flailed his arms which kept him from doing the full backflip. From the dead rotation and the way he was laying there, I'm positive he landed on his head or neck.. I chickened out, took it as a sign from God. Went down past the guy to go get ski patrol. He was a bloody mess. |

I second this, nothing works like not wanting to embarrass yourself in front of some chicks. On a general term, like my quote states, I try not to over-think it. I usually just get to a comfortable speed, and unless it is a spin just see what happens while im in the air. |

Whenever I hit a jump, the fear of overshooting it ALWAYS hits me right before the jump and I end up braking too much that i barely make it over the top. This season is when that is gonna change!

I have a hell of a time spotting my landing. The jump always seems to go by in .02 seconds. Usually I just go for it and hope for the best.

I made my first attempts at big jumps last night. The first try was probably the scariest thing I've ever done haha. I think my problem is not spotting my landing and absorbing it very well. My friends told me I looked like a pencil in midair. They said to try a grab for more control but I think I need to worry about as few things as possible right now until I get comfortable with hitting those big airs.

I havent been able to find my timing yet for popping, I seem to pop too late and then am all jumbled in the air. Ive mastered boxes and done that but just having the balls to go at it and learn. I know I will eventually be able to get the correct speed and timing to launch of bigger jumps

Yep. First thing first when hitting new jumps, be comfortable. If grabbing isn't, then don't do it yet. I just stepped up to the bigger kickers @ my resort, didn't do a grab at all, even though on the smaller ones (that arn't that that small) I've been getting nose, tail, stales, melons and most of the grabs completely down. When I first was looking at it, I was scared. Then I thought, wow these arn't even big compared so some I've seen. Just looked at, thought of myself hitting it, and knew I could do it, which I did. Perrrrrfecto. If you know your good enough, do it.

If its a new jump i like to watch people hit it a few times. Then when I go for it i tell myself i can do it, and make sure I commit to it. I find when the commitment is only 50% there, thats when injuries occur. But approach is trickiest, not going too fast or too slow.

I look at the jump only for a second and breath deep and decide what goes up will come down and know that if I grab the board ill be more stabel in the air. Then I just go and pop at the take off and see how it goes. Some time you win sometimes you lose

Spend a little time in the park near the jump / kicker / or table that you want to hit. Watch other riders hit it. Watch them to see their speed. Then, take another run through the park again and approach the jump with the speed that you think you need to safely clear it / land it. Stop just shy of the top and get a good look at the distance needed to clear it from the top of the jump. Last but not least (may sound stupid but it works), picture yourself hitting the jump and landing it in order to build up your confidence. Then, go hit it. If you come up short, you obviously know you need more speed. If you over shoot it, scrub off some speed. After hitting a jump a few times, no matter how big or small, you will start to get an eye for how fast you need to hit it and it will be easier for you to judge it each and every time. Practice practice practice. That's the key. Good luck, you'll get it.
