OK been concocting a new thread idea for a few days and here it is -- how many of you kids on this site get to enjoy snowboarding with your dogs?  If so post some pics -- I don't have any snow-related on this computer but will post some of my dogs Ellie Mae and Pacino when I get to the office.

Suffice it to say that crashing down a backcountry line with your dogs behind you is a good time.  There are also many quality times to be had in the Slide Side parking lot party at Mt. Rose (sorry, we're Reno locals) which turns into a dog fest pretty much every day during the season.

even though its forbidden to reply to own thread first, here's a dog story I meant to include in last post:

At Big Sky this year was waiting in line for the mini-tram with friends and some tele-stud ripped down part of the face.  An Aussie cruised down right behind him and someone pointed out what was the truth -- "your dog just rode the couloir better than most people"

That sounds awesome.  Been sledding with my dog, but never snowboarding.  Do you put your dog on a board or something or does he/she just try to keep up somehow?

no, no . . .  Dogs just hike behind (or more likely around your feet) on the way up the hill and run down behind when you're surfing around.  They mostly love it, but get cold sometimes

Oh, ok...that's cool.  I was just thinking they might sink in or something if it was deep powder, and you always see clips of dogs on skateboards and surfboards, so....  When we went sledding, I just plopped my dog in front of me on the sled and we rode down together.  He actually loves the snow and doesn't seem to mind the cold :).

Does anyone dress their dog up with coats and booties?  I never would but find it hilarious that people do!

Sort of related but have to mention this...saw a guy yesterday riding his Harley in Malibu canyon with his dog sitting in front of him on the bike!  Man I wish I could have snapped a picture.

fyi there is an edit post option so you don't have to reply to your own thread.  However I am a little worried about you if it took you a few days to come up with this thread idea.  Wink

Killclimbz has the best photos of him riding back country with his dog cody following behind.

I was wiped out by a rampaging hound, who decided my board was extremely irritating compared to the 50 or so other boards and skis in the vicinity... no harm done to either party and I have the headcam footage of the beast being swept up onto my topsheet and carried a wee bit.

This was not a dedicated shred dog, but simply a resort hussy dog, who just wanted suckers to throw sticks and snowballs for him.

My girl used to bring her dog with us, and it would hang with us all day and stand between her legs when she was going down the runs... Until the day her dog slipped off and she ran over it's foot =( Her dog still comes out with us, but is no longer allowed to actually ride with us.

I used to carry my dog when I went snowboarding or sledding down hills by my house.  She used to love it.  I think she was too lazy to chase after me though.

I've seen some dogs at the slops before.  From what i've seen, some of the dogs do not want to be in the snow.  Those yuppie dogs aren't exactly weathered for the situation.
Yeah that's a rip stick.

Lot's of practice and patience.  Your dog has to learn how to behave in the backcountry and in the snow in general.  You also have to keep in mind that your board will mess up your dog big time. Cut tendons, potentially kill them.  So you have to be ready to avoid your pooch and put on the brakes if necessary.  Which can suck if it means you have to post hole your way out.  Cody is pretty good about staying out of my way or stepping aside if I catch up to him.  On really steep stuff though, he likes to let it rip because he can generally keep up with me.  He can dollar sign my turns, especially in spring condition.  That is where I have to really pay attention as we are both having so much fun, a collision would be easy to do.  I'll also have someone hold onto him on some of the bigger, more dangerous, one at a time lines.  Letting him go only after I am off the slope.

The good news is that they have a blast out there, and want to go with you.  So they learn how to act pretty quickly with basic training techniques.  You just have to watch your pooch and make sure they are doing ok.  Not getting too tired, dehydrated, hungry, keeping them away from danger, etc.  Which means extra weight in your pack, but way worth it imo.

i actually wonder what it is about bulldogs that makes them so good at these sort of things besides their low center of gravity.

to re-hash an old thread, here's a shot of my wife's partner's golden, along with another friend's golden, chasing me down the pow in Kirkwood side country Sunday.  Wish it were a little better quality, but I never bring my camera and beggars can't be choosers . . . .

i think bulldogs are so good at things because of their low center of gravity and short legs
