    Posted: Jun/07/2010 at 4:27pm

Last week i purchased two pairs of shorts, burton uptown, and volcom cargos.  After wearing the cargo's for a day i got on sierra snowboard the next day and wrote an honest review on them.  I think it was titled "My new favorite shorts"  I left the details about the sizes and said they were durable, comfortable and stylish.  Later that night i logged in and turns out one of the "experts" marked it as spam.  I was not even doing it for the points i was doing it so that someone else could have a good idea what they were buying.  Correct me if i'm wrong but if a person that has "expert" status marks something as spam it automatically gets erased and points are deducted.  Why would sierra give someone besides paid staff the right to instantly deduct me points?  What stock does some expert have in my business with sierra?  None, none at all.  Experts should get to mark a review as spam the same way as the ski bums.  Why? because they have no stock in my business with sierra.

Note this thread is not meant for me to just vent and get my anger out, i am looking for an explanation from a staff member and a possible way to get that review posted!!

If you don't review anything it can't get flagged a spamThumbs Up

So, I didn't flag your review, but lets examine your statements for a moment;

Comfortable theres some decent information.

Stylish? Really? You think they can't see that from the picture?

And lets drop this whole I'm not doing it for the points thing, if you weren't why does it bother you so much? I mean it's not like its posted for everyone to see on your profile, so if it was really a good review Sierra's only hurting their own business.

Moving on, There are 200 some odd thousand community members, all capable of posting reviews and about 15 internet staff. Experts are people who've been around long enough to show that they're main interest is a quality community. What stock do I have in your review? I genuinely want to help people get the right product for their need, if I don't feel your review is a step toward that goal then I will flag it.

I guess i assumed.  Wouldn't it take five "ski bums" to flag it?  I just doubt that 5 people flagged a legitmate review as spam.

First you post "for your brother"

and then this thread for you.

Must be a sad day in the Ginger house, points are getting deducted left and right.

I was going to ask about this same oddity. Who bought the shorts again? And really? You've now made back the three lost points with the three damn threads you've posted about this, and all you've really done is lose more of my respect (and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way). Is all this *really* worth it?

Isn't telling someone that the shorts are durable and comfortable enough?  How many reviews do you see that people just say something like, "haven't tried  it yet, but it looks stylish." and don't get flagged.
How much can a person review about a pair of shorts?  I wrote all that i could and someone flagged it.

It's not about points because it's only 3 points, and yes i do need to drop it.  I just feel kinda ripped off that's all.  I have recieved a few messages from other people that have complained of the same thing and so i'm hoping someone can fix it..

There is no perfect system, but the one they have strikes the balance between encouraging reviews and pointless reviews that say nothing. You say it's not about the points, but ask yourself-- if there were no point system, would you be upset the review was taken down? Would you have made three threads about it? Or even one thread? And frankly, would you have reviewed the shorts at all?

Exactly

PS-- the reviews you say are "haven't tried them..." and useless-- FLAG THEM... That's why the system is there.

I like this... This is fun....

If the review was not for the points... well then I can only assume it's to "give back" to the community, and part of giving to a community is about being a part of that community. Acceptance.. Respect. I daresay more has been done to alienate a key part of this community (and I'm not speaking about me) with these threads than has been done to ingratiate yourself to it. Again, I ask that you be honest with yourself. This wouldn't be the issue it seems to be if it wasn't for the points.

Maybe the fact that you couldn't write anymore should've told you something? Writing all you can doesn't automatically make it a "legit review".

I can tell you with all honesty that before these threads and changing stories that nobody had it out for you. However, now you've got 2 or 3 threads of complaints, with different stories. I can still tell you with all honesty that none of the experts are going to have it out for you,(we actually get fairly regular email telling us to be easy with this stuff) but every member that sees these threads is now going to go look at your reviews. Many of them are much more vindictive then any of the experts.

I'm sorry you feel like you were treated unfairly, but such is life. Even with expert members and staff every single review doesn't always get read, and I'm sure there are many that should be flagged, but just because theirs suck and got through doesn't mean every crappy review should be allowed to stand.

I originally reviewed it so that if someone wanted to buy them then they could have a better idea what they were buying.  I disagree i don't think i am alienating myself i just don't think that it should have been removed.  I am on here every day contributing to the forums and it's rediculous to say that just because I don't like the spamming system that i am trying to alienate myself.  Sorry if i disrespected you but i felt i was disrespected myself.

One question though, if the spamming system isn't flawed then why does sierra leave an option at the bottom of the review page that says "i would like to own these shorts?"  Why give someone who claims they haven't even purchased or demo'd the gear the option to leave the review?

What does your order # have to do with anything? Did you not get your points for purchase?

Just because you purchased them with Sierra doesn't give you the right to get points from subpar reviews.

I originally told my bro that one of my product reviews was marked as spam.  He was the one that left the previous post.  It is obvious that i need to get my own account started.  Sorry for the confusion

I have a suggestion...

to be super fair to Ginger, can you, Sierra, repost his review here, in this thread and make a voting poll to see what others think if it should be spam or not?
It'll be very interesting.

To clarify (even though Phatman sort of did it already) I haven't flagged a single one of your reviews, nor do I plan to. But as Pat said, there are far more vindictive members than me. The fact that I rolled my eyes at this thread (after reading both the others) led me to assume that more reviews will get flagged (and not by experts). The flaggers may not be the majority (most probably don't care one way or the other) but they are a very active and vocal minority. So that's what I was getting at with the whole alienation comments. I felt no disrespect, and I wasn't trying to give any. Just wanted you to see the logic most folks would follow to come to the conclusion that, no matter how much you say it's not about the points, it's kind of really about the points. Wink

2zz has a good point but I'm sure it would marked 99.9% spam as most would vote that way for fun

I've lost points/reviews on stuff I've bought from sierra and some of them didn't even have another review on it so I'm not sure what's going on if they don't want my review I guess that's their business decision, to remove it.

okay, I have maxed up my points for the day, I'm out and I'll check the result tomorrow. And earn more points. hehehehe.
Oh-o, I have a feeling that I'm bout to lose my point and get spam.
hahahaha.
Ginger, to be honest, I don't care bout this at all and I'm not trying to disrespect you. I go on here to have fun and do research. And this is what it suppose to be in the first place, a useful place and a fun place, right? well imo at least. The way you are going bout this seems like you do care bout your points more.
Ginger, I think I might have chatted wit you before, and I enjoy everyones company here. But for your own good, just drop it and let it soon be forgotten.

btw, I had wrote reviews before and never saw them again. don't worry and don't take it too personal. It happen already, just learn to come to peace wit it and make it easier for yourself. Hope this doesn't disencourage you from login and share your thoughts still.

Ginger, you wrote less then acceptable reviews that the COMMUNITY did not accept. You may think otherwise but seriously, GET THE HINT. It makes you look sad and desperate. There is no pointing really arguing your cause because its the community that decides what's good and what's not. Stop being in denial.

Why do people keep posting about losing points.  Do they just not see how many others get flogged by posting.  "I lost my points", "Where'd my points go", "I don't really care about points, but lost 30 of them".
I guess with a community as large as Sierra's, you're going to get some people only posting to get a point and only reviewing to get points.  I seriously don't care about points.  I have found a community that I enjoy logging onto most days as the site makes me laugh, think and converse with people with similar hobbies.
If you don't care about points, don't post that you lost your points Cry  If you care about points, find great threads and post something worth contributing.  Write insightful reviews about the products you KNOW about, have used, and may help others in figuring out what the product is.  This is after all a website.  We may not get the right idea bout the size, color, cut from the pictures on the site.

OKAY, done with my soap box... NEXT Shocked

Sorry, I didn't read your PM Ginger, deleted it straight away. If you have something to add then you can add it in the thread for others to see.

Clap EpicFail. "I don't really care about points, but lost 30 of them". That is sooo true!

Seriously though, I think there may be a flaw when you delete one of your own posts. I posted something earlier and then I personally deleted it myself. Now, when I view my profile, my spam count for forum posts is at 1. WTF? Really? You spam count goes up if you delete one of your posts???
