I'm going to be in Tokyo for 3 days 2 nights. Where should I stay to get the best tokyo experience? I'm looking for a good central location for some day excursions to cool places.
I've found this place but I'm not sure if it's a good location or not. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1066461-d1628827-Reviews-Hotel_Mystays_Asakusa_bashi-Taito_Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html |

another shitty start to the season :) Niseko is fine, but nagano isnt even close to starting. Its going to take a proper dump to kick things off! Im watching the hakuba web cams daily and its a rollercoaster ride. Some days its green and rain, and others its looking nice and white. JUST START ALREADY, YOU BASTARDS!!!

Hey guys.
Keen on heading to Japan in February. Just wondering is it safe to go, or should I wait till 2013. I'm going to be doing it real cheap, since I have spent the last 12 months abroad. And this is my stop-over before I return to Australia. Was thinking of 3 days in Osaka, 2 days in Kyoto, a week in Hakuba and 3 days in Tokyo. Whats the best and cheapest way to get around. What kind of budget would I be looking at? I'm keen on eating supermarket food, and bunking with others. Cheers martin, my trip last february was pretty much identical to the one your planing. i booked a return flight from australia so i'll discount that from the costs, but we booked through a hostel and hired most of our gear, got return transfers from narita airport in tokyo to hakuba and 6 days of lift tickets and 7 nights of accommodation in a hostel dorm for 900 australian dollars. After that i spent about 10 days in tokyo, osaka and kyoto and nara and booked a 1 week JR rail pass for the bullet trains for 350 aus. I reckon all up for 3 weeks away excluding flights was roughly 2500 and thats hiring gear and lift tickets and all our accomodation and other expenses for 3 weeks. |

sorry haven't done any long stay research at all
considering a season lift pass will be around 600-750~ taking this out it will only be under 250 a week for everything else? i cant even pay rent here for 250 a week

Is ~$4200 for 14 weeks of room, food, lift tickets and a guide a good price? Although I don't need a guide, but it's what's included.

kyoto is alas right on your route. It goes something like this on the train
ooooooooosssssaaaaaaakkkkkkaaaaa... 2 minutes of fields ...kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkyyyyyooootooo. No point in skipping it if youre there. You just have to bite the bullet on the whole travel time thing. The only way around it is really to skip kansai altogether, But i think kansai si better than tokyo, so youd be a fool to yourself :p

Sorry about the stupid question. Didn't really have time to research. Stupid mistake. Internet is limited due to being on the move.
Ippolite If I was going to skip kyoto. And just went from Osaka to Hakuba to Tokyo. Or vice versa. Is there a cheap way of doing it. Like I said my funds are very limited, but time is not really an issue. |

it isn't that we are mean, its that if the poster had done his research, he/she would know that the level of radation they'd get from the flight itself would be FAR greater than anything other than a in-depth multi-day tour of the Fukushima nuclear plant itself.

^ It's damn serious, not to be taken lightly. As you stated, do not use garlic, garlic only works on vampires (and that's a completely different organization monitoring the night stalkers, although we do work in conjunction with them on occasion when a vampire mates with a zombie).
We prefer to use clinical terms (rather than wee wee or beaver) when describing actions to render a zombie harmless. For instance, using the edge of your snowboard deliver a direct nut-shot or bush-shot (female zombies do not maintain the landscaping) to the zombie, the result is an incapacitated zombie (anywhere from 10-20 minutes, enough time to escape). Severing the head only means you are now dealing with a headless zombie, easier to fool and avoid but still dangerous.

oooh no, it is getting serious then. well if you do go, what you'll need to do then is shield yourself by using burton gear(they hate em) and will act as a barrier. BUT if that fails, dont use garlic. garlic doesnt work on them, nor cutting their head off. your only option is go for their wee wee and beaver.
(lol this is getting epic)

I received a report stating the RNZ (Radioactive Ninja Zombies) have circumvented the barriers that segregated them from the general population and have formed RNZ colonies all over Japan, focusing on ski/snowboard resorts. Zombie experts speculate the RNZ enjoy the taste of snowboarder brains more than the brains of non-snowboarders. Experts go on to say the RNZs go into a fit of rage when they accidentally eat a skier brain since it's light eating, typically more of an appetizer than a meal. Edit: I should have stated upfront that I am a member of ZERO (Zombie Emergency Response Operations) and may be privy to information others cannot acquire.

^^yeah but these arnt regular zombies like ctoma says, they are really fast and what they do is sit by the border where the government zoned off to keep intruders in, and really the nuclear crisis was all a hoax just so the government had an explaination to clear a whole area to give to them

kyoto to hakuba is gonna be pricey. There might be a bus though
Otherwise its kyoto to nagano, then nagano to matsumoto, then matsumoto to kamishiro/hakuba on the train. Bit of a mission that one. Doable, but costly. Here, for example is a mission without any limited express (an extra 3000 or so yen) Only takes you around 10 hours 35 minutes. :) With Ltd Express its cut down to about 6 hours. And with shinkansen and ltd express you can do it in a mere 5 hours! Get in! Just to remind you, it takes about that long to go from fukuoka to tokyo. :) So an alternative might be to go to nagano instead and then get the bus to hakuba from there. Its a bit more pricey, but theres no dicking around Costs 9800 yen and takes 200 minutes. And then you have to spend another 1500 yen for the bus to hakuba and that takes another hour.

popped into tokyo just the other week. Its just under 6 months now and everything is pretty much back to normal. Aside things like aircon (cool biz) and some trains running limited schedules, the food supply is plentiful (whether its safe or not is another question, but being somewhat cavalier with my health anyway im not the best person to ask - the only thing ive consciously done different is buy volvic instead of nihon water - im still eating onigiri, veggies and fish from god knows where... and drinking the milk (though it says hokkaido on the box).
Snowboards are nice and cheap right now in and around teh snowboard district. You can pick up skate bananas almost everywhere for between 30-40,000 yen. Still pricey mind you, but at about 50% off on japan msrp. Also found some bataleons (including ex demo samples for this years gear at nice reduced price - but no riot, so no deal :)). Just like in korea its mainly just teh softer line (airobic, twin, whatever, funkink). I did find the 2011 riot though, only its a 155 and much as i want that on the 2012 (though its discontinued and now 157 iirc), i think its a bit short for me from the old tbt as an all mountain ripper to replace the quiver killer. Pretty much everywhere i said told me to pop back in mid september, so it was only a little trip around. Was quoted 62,000yen for the 2012 riot when they have it in stock. Apparently thats discounted as well :0 but there you go, "the cost of doing international business". Probably just buy it off evo if they dont have it in stock here. :)

a lot of japanese are worried that the govt isn't telling them everything. but for the most part, life goes on in other parts of the japan. Tokyo is functioning but trains are not at their usual efficiency and I believe there are still rolling blackouts in tokyo. I think there is also some hoarding in tokyo for basic supplies like bottled water.

I think he means its not going quite as mental as western media reports would indicate (radiation clouds coming to destroy tokyo; mass evacuations; no food; no electricity; dogs and cats living together...) And from what i gather its generally correct. Theres a great deal of story manufacture going on from people who probably should know better. Even the BBC, that legendary source of information has been driving me insane with its hypotheticals, qualifiers, and exaggerations.

it's def not to the point where the nation is working like nothing happened. tokyo is running pretty smooth but with some limited train service and some power cuts. you will see more normalcy the further south you go.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think except the affected area, and the radiation issues, the rest of Japan is working like nothing happened.
Rephrasing, there's normal activity in the rest of the country, right?

there was an avalanche that clamed 3 lives from the first earth quake on Friday afternoon here in Hakuba,
The ski fields are running at 1/2 speed on the lifts as there are now one here. Shame as we just got a good 40 50cm up the top of the mountain last night. and good pow! |

yes. on the news, there was a 6.6 earthquake near nagano which triggered avalaches and mudslides. But, I think most ski areas would be safe unless you were in the back country. And, from what I hear, niseko is running as usual right now.

The people I met who worked at Niseko said they were pretty scared. So ya, the mountains were affected. Still probably a lot of very nervous people over there since there are still aftershocks not to mention the flooding. Still very dangerous at the moment.

The impression I got when I was in Hakuba, was the old phrase "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" (or whatever it is)
No one was being disrespectful of other people's property. |

that's odd. I didn't really pay that much attention but I found that most of the skis and boards weren't even on racks. Most were lain on the ground. I was at hirafu too. anyway, I'm sure there are people who use locks. But I didn't notice any.
