It's that time of summer again.... I'm really itching to ride already and have been thinking of snowboarding day and night.
This coming season is gonna be my 2.5 season and I love riding powder. Has anyone done snowcat boarding? What is your take on the experience and where/who do you think, in the U.S., is the best snowcat operator?
Silverton Powdercats
San Juans Ski Co.
San Juan snowcats
Keystone Adventure Tours
All of these are in Colorado.

Didn't find much but found a video about it. It is basically going in the backcountry by way of a snowcat and snowboarding. |

Snowcat Skiing/Boarding is kinda like heliboarding but using a snowcat (the same snowcats that resorts use to grom their runs). A snowcat takes a group of about 10 up to the top of a mountain and the rider rides down and they do it all over again. It's only about $275-$350 per rider for the whole day, usually 9-12 runs. Looks like a good way to ride fresh tracks and it looks really fun because the only other riders you'll are riders from your group. |

I couldn't say who the best is. In Colorado, I'd take a long look at San Juan Snow Cats. I believe that is the operation that starts out of Durango mountain resort. The main reason I say this is most cat operators do not have exclusive access to their terrain. Meaning sled skiers and riders can be out there tracking up what you are paying a premium to get. I think that the nature of the San Juan operation doesn't allow access for this type of user.
Keystone snow cat is a joke. I guess it doesn't cost much, but you are getting what you pay for. The Canadian outfitters like Baldface are superior to the American operations big time... |
