I had thought I saw this here in SS but it was from Anandtech. sorry. This guy is CRAZY.. it's his job.. but shtook free climbing like that... My hands starting sweating when I watched this.. not just clammy hands but actual sweat coming down.. If you are scared of heights then... maybe don't watch? or if you want to try to overcome your fear.. take a look |

How in the world do they build something so tall and yet so narrow? I would like to know how that tower is assembled.
Definitely not something I could do.

i could never do that. it's not so much i have a fear of heights, but a fear of falling from high places without being able to stop myself from falling. i'd have to be really drunk to have the courage to do that. i don't think i'd do so well when drunk.

Oh my fricken god!!! I can't believe that they free climb once they get out of the cage. I'm just wondering how it would be to fall from the top. I mean you would have soooo much time to think before you hit the ground. Those people better be making a grip of money!!

I actually used to be a foreman for a company that did tower work on standard cell phone towers throughout the nyc area...the highest tower around here is in alpine, Nj and I've installed steel and antennas at the top at I believe 425 feet. The worst are the monopoles, a straight cylinder up to 300 feet and all you can climb are the little pegs sticking out the side...quite uncomfortable.
I'll say that myself and my men all used a strict 100% tie in protocol, my boss and the "older crews" definitely use free climbing and its crazy to climb with someone who barely ever ties in. Where this job is fun is rappelling, a lot of times we had to rappell over 150 feet and that's really fun. Also in the city, I've rappelled down the faces of 12 story buildings. It's really funny the reactions you get from people on the sidewalk or in their apartment windows when our feet are dangling outside their 8th story window! I'm sure that if you search cell tower rappelling you'll see some crazy stuff... |

What he did was illegal, and from what I hear, he's losing his job because of it.
In the US and Canada, climbers must maintain 2 points of secure connection to the object they are climbing, regardless of how "hard" it is to get up. |

well I quit last year to go back to college..so not much as I am working part time to afford time for my pre-med degree..if you must know I made about 62,000 a year after becoming foreman and I was 23..pretty good for my socioeconomic class and the rates around where I live. In four years though, I'll be making double that and work half as much as an optometrist. |

I read a few interviews online once. Here is a quote I found interesting
"When you go up a tower and you’re climbing 400 feet, you’re not coming down to get a cup of coffee, you’re not coming down to warm your hands, you’re not coming down for a lunch break. When you go up the tower you’re going to be there all day, it’s kind of like being like a mountain climber." http://www.e-shadow.com/?s=tower |

They don't have a parachute, because a parachute means you have a back-up plan. If you know you have more than one way of getting off, you are sloppy.

haha you dump before you go up, and these towers dont usually have anything around them for a good distance, so we would simply hang off of something and pee. It's called a tower shower. a lot of dudes pee down one of the legs of the tower that nobody climbs up, but that's still skeevy.. and yes, it's windy up there. After about 90 feet the wind is constant, and pretty much the higher you go the more windy it gets... |
