This might sound like a totally stupid question... I live close to 24hrs drive from the nearest snow... (QLD Australia), and I sometimes strap myself onto my board in my living room and muck around just to keep the feel of being on the board and moving it around etc when I can't get to the snow and in summer. Is there anything specific I can try on carpet to improve my balance and my movement on the board? Thanks

i would say wax your board before you go to the snow, all that rubbing the base on the carpet can't be good for it.
as for improving your balance, don't think you need your board to do that, plenty of exercises you can do to practice your balance. Tried skateboarding? :P |

Skateboarding, buy/make a balance board, get a Wii and Wii Fit with the board - lots of balance exercises and games.

The rocker roller balance board is a very good tool. You can easily build one yourself using 4" diameter pvc tubing and a plank of wood set to the width of your stance + allowable for feet. I did the rug thing and found it a bit too tiresome in the end XD.

You could always try sand if you have some nearby... dunes are apparently pretty good for practicing tricks.

Longboard skateboarding...the closest thing I have come across to carving on a snowboard...if you can get to the point where you can carve a hundred yards or more on your longboard without putting your foot down it will transfer to the snow in my opinion.

If im bored, I usually get a board, then put a pipe underneath it and try to balance as long as I could. Its the same concept as a balance board. Give that a try.

I saw a video where a guy strapped a skateboard deck to his feet with elastic cords. He then would olie onto a stationary wood log as if he was doing a board slide. I'm going to try to find a used deck at a garage sale and try it out before the season starts over here in California.

awesome... thanks, and yes I plan to wax my board before I use it again! :) I'm using my second (old) board anyways just to muck around.

Hey i live in canberra which is only like 2.5 hours from the snow and i still do the same as you haha. I would say another thing that could help would be to go on a trampoline and practice spinning 180's and 360's.

I hear rip sticks are the best thing to get the feel of shreading.
Skateboarding and Longboarding are great i hear. Wow you must live like near townsville or something right? That must be a pain. If it is the country side id suggest Longboarding. I hear its a better feel compared to skateboarding. Plus you'll have open roads that lead to.... nowhere

Yes longboarding is much different than regular skateboarding and much closer to snowboarding at least from a carving perspective.

l knwo that at my local workout place, they have this ball that they sell with a platform on it, thats used to help balancing. not 100% sure if it helps for snowboarding, but improving your balance can help in alot of situtation and more or less for snowbaording

Yeah I longboard and its just like carving with a snowboard putting pressure to the front toes and back heels to turn. The balance is just the same maybe a little harder cause your not strapped in. Also helps you with your "skating" when your going to the lift lines.
One thing is that I longboard goofy and snowboard regular so this is my first year of longboarding and last season was my first year snowboarding so I hope it helps me with switch riding. I hope I dont go up to the Mountains and get confused on which way to ride. |

If you really want the snowboard feel, you could always try the Freebord.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX99quvLyv8 There's also the Flowboard, but I hear it's too heavy to practice any tricks. |

Longboards are close, but they're just not the same. I'm really lucky in that they are building a snowflex center 25 min from my house. I can't wait till they're open!

Was thinking of trying out a longboard... freebords look amazing! but I can totally see myself in the emergency room after my first go...
And yeah I don't quite live as far north as Townsville, I'm on the Sunshine Coast. :) |
