Now I know where to link ppl to when asked random-a$$ed questions! Its also a great thread to send friends to who cant quite picture/fathom what Im trying to explain.

No problem man, thanks for the encouragement. And eldo, the sticky dies when you edit the first post. That's why i put off the thread name change until i was ready to start editing it. Hopefully, ill have it finished by this afternoon and then ill harass someone to sticky it again :)

DADA!!!!
It's finished. At least for the second pass. I may re-write stuff once i regain the ability to look at it without vomiting, but for the time being it's complete. Found my angle on the introduction and hope it doesn't come off too ridiculous sounding. I felt since the conclusion section ('Final Thoughts') was very much about making sure you get the right gear for the job you want, the introduction should balance the equation: 90/10. So bookmarking the entire guide is the Introduction (90) and the conclusion (10). Pretty ridiculous, but it felt beautifully complete so i ran with it until i literally ran out of ways of saying the same thing over and over again. :) |

Sticky this bitch stat!!!
We need something like this to stop the millions of new threads that pop up every day with such as original titles as; -"what board should I get?" -"Is this size ok for me?" -"I'm too stupid to use the search function" You see where i'm going... |

haha, thanks man, but maybe hold off on the sticky just one more day. I always need a second day to read the part i wrote with fresh eyes and make sure im not boring myself too much. :) Sticky that, and i'll be reluctant to edit it again, which may taint the entire project if what i wrote in that first section is utter garbage :)

Sweet jesus man this post is sick.
After a very unproductive morning at work I've finished reading it and I feel super ejumecated. I can't image how long you have spent writing this up. That's what I call dedication. |

Great job ipollite. You could include the link to burton sizing guide just so someone could use it if they choose.

that would be the worst advice. What if it looks nice, but isn't the kind of board you want (say a park board(soft like a noodle) and you wanna take it to charge the mountain) Doesn't make sense to buy something for what it is not, just because you love the graphics.

This is awesome!!!
The only way it could be even better is if there could be some suggestions for women's boards, or more women's specific issues... For example, do the weight/board length ranges change for women, etc. Thanks for writing it, it looks like it was major work!!! |

Its definitely something i really think is missing as well. Im just having a bit of a difficult time finding solid information (which is precisely the reason women need a reliable guide maybe). As it stands the big things that crop up are: Smaller waist width to account for feet size. Softer flex (long and torsional) to account for leg strength. Smaller lengths to account for height. In summary, women's boards are narrower, shorter, and have a softer flex. My problem is that this doesnt feel like its the full picture, and if it is, theres really not much more to add :) hmmm, maybe i should add it as a category in the different types of decks though. I think teh case needs to be made about why these decks even exist and why women probably want to be on them instead of on smaller mens decks, or even kid size decks. Actually someone asked me this exact question the other day (should they buy the 137 such and such girls deck, or save cash and buy the 137 grom deck) and it did make me wonder about the differences. I guess this means i should probably talk about grom decks too :p This guide never ends, theres always something else :) Oh and thanks for the positive encouragement guys. And of course if something seems wrong or you disagree with something, please do say. The most important thing is accuracy at the end of the day :) |

just because youre being nice dont mean i wont flag you :p
Easiest board to ride is the one that does what you want it to do. really look at boards in the second and third categories. Theyll usually treat you well :) |

Got time to sit down and read through this. Fantastic work, I can't imagine how long that took and giving mad props to the consolidation of information. Although we try to standardize advice, it definitely varies from person to person.

I know this is a sticky here in the geartalk forum, but there HAS to be a way we can get it a Link on the hompage, or stickied at the top of every forum ala giveaways and announcements.....
Its just a topic that comes up way to often and gets linked to way to often that it only deserves to be stickied in just the geartalk... |

This is very well done. Thanks Ipp.
Question/Comment: No mention of strength/athleticism (maybe i missed it in the long read) being able to change the flex of the board, there was the big guy vs small guy discussion but it seemed to be about weight and height. Can the strength and athleticism of the rider alter what the rider can do to the board? |

Question Ippy: it says in the guide that the custom flying V and the sherlock are in different categories but I have ridden both of those and I would put them in the same category for sure. does that "flying V" in the "all resort cat." mean to refer to the v-rocker? if so then I agree. then that puts the flying Vs in the "all mtn/big mtn freestyle cat."

i kinda based that a lot on what i was hearing about the sherlock. It seemed it was a slightly more aggressive freestyle stick than the custom v/flying v. Truth is, i think i mentioned somewhere here or at snowjapan that the custom, being the flagship deck of category three is one of the decks i really feel like sticking in category 4. That whole thing is a bit squirly though if im honest. As i say it went kind of on flex and where i visualised the deck performing at its peak. From the stuff i read about the sherlock (as well as the people hyping it), it seemed like it suited more rugged natural terrain than the custom, so that was probably the reason. But dont worry dude, theres so much in there i look at and think "should that deck be there?" Hell, on the second pass i moved the indoor FK into category 2 even though there was a paragraph in category three talking about my experience on the indoor fk :)
However if you remain unconvinced i'll throw the sherlock into cat 3 if you think it should be there. If youve ridden it, your experience counts way more than my interpretation of other people having ridden it :) Oh, and thanks for all the nice words guys. Its appreciated :) PS. Rylander, yeah strength and balance will affect your ability to load the tail, which will affect your ability to pop that deck. If youre a fat ass like me, pressing my indoor fk is gonna be a lot more of a pain than if my 70kilo was nought but pure thigh muscle and an incredible center of gravity :) |
