I reckon it wouldn't be too comfortable what with all the sand flying around your face and getting into your clothes. but has anyone tried it before?

I haven't tried and am interested in trying it as well. But I would thought under the strong heat of the sun, you would most likely wearing just board shots or bikini?

great sand dunes national park(now), fast and short, dumb ass above probably forgot his PAM spray, so the sand doesn't stick, but its fun, kinda like sledding, and you can say you did it and get some cool pictures. it's the stopping that sucks...

Yeah i sand board all the time in australia. I live near the beach and the snow is a 5hr drive in winter so i sand board in summer. Its definately not slow if your on the right size sand dune. Its good fun but the worst part is running back up the sand hill at the end.

I think sandboarding would be more difficult because it doesn't really pack at all.

You have a special board made like a skate deck with straps, put wax on the bottom then good to go. There are 70 to 80 m sand hills near where i live that you can hammer down on.

caps lock should be forbidden...especially for meaningless posts.
I think sandboarding is cool with the right gear. I saw some guys in a desert with cliffs and all...they were fast enough and it looked very interesting. A one hour drive from here is a high sand hill with industrial waste (non toxic of course) and there is a lift. But for sure it's not as fast as snow and hurts far more. Sand is so hard when you fall down... And clothes...a bikini or boardshorts are only the choice until you fall down for the first time. |

I've seen it on tv before...this one dude travels to go sand boarding...his board was like a wake board then binding..looked fun he said but sand all over your face..
looking at the pics on previous post..dang..I actually felt bad for the board..wouldn't grainy sand scratch the bottom of the snowboard?? would be fun to try though with an old beat up skateboard at the sand dune in hermosa/rendondo beach area!!! |

Lol. That looked like it hurt, spenser.
It looks pretty fun to me... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-8K1hYpzPg It doesn't seem that slow at all - you probably just have to find the right kind of sand. |

I think it would be best to be towed by an ATV...kinda like water skiing but on sand. Then you'd be able to get more speed than using just the gravity. I'm sure someone out there has made a video...right? I not able to access videos at work or else I'd find one and post it here.

I would assume they would have special gear with special sand repellent boots though. Anyway i don't like sand at all so I wouldn't try it anytime soon.

They use formica boards...think countertops in cheap diners. It's pretty durable and slides well, though you still usually wax or spray it for best performance. |

Youd get cut up pretty bad if you fell. I don't think I'd want my board sliding on sand either-- must be a bitch to clean out. Imagine rocks getting lodged into my base.

I tried it on time and I had to go down like a double black steepness to get any speed, I think they make special boards for it. Your edges also get buried when you turn. It's worth trying if your by a dune, but don't travel that long if you're not by one.

We used to do something called slash boarding when I was a kid. First you nail some old skate shoes to an old skate deck sans wheels/trucks. You wait till it's rained pretty hard and everythings muddy. Then you find a steep hill with an open line down it, take your shoes off, jam em in the nailed on shoes and point it. Definitely only something a kid would do though, cause you get muddy and scraped up as shtook but I remember it being pretty damn fun.

i'm guessing you need to have an older board since it seems like the sand/rocks would be murder on the board.

exactly what i was thinking. I have hear of this before though and my friends was thinking of making a sand dune. So unless you go to a desert...i dont think its a great idea cause of the pebbles and junk. |

ive done it before in aus up in the gold coast.. it sounds good and all... but when u experience it.. you realise snow is 100 times better..
nothing worse then lugging ur board up a hill, on a hot weather, with sorching sands burning every step, and it takes 5 times the effort to walk up in sand, when you get up there you just want to find shade and relax instead of boarding down as you realise it wasnt worth it in the first place.. in the snows when u walk to the top, your body swet is balance out by the coldness of the snow, so you dont feel that tired.. When you board down on the sand, you get pebbles in your face, sand in your body, and rice grains up your crack, end of the day board is heavily scatch, and lots of things feel uncomfortably. When you fall down its even worse |

^ it's real mate. Apparently there's quite a big following in Namibia where they haw actual deserts and dunes. I think it works my like a wakeboard, but definitely more similar to snow boarding. Helps to have an ATV around so you can buggy up to the top again after each run down.

I tried it once, like other people have said, it is slow, you need to find a pretty steep hill and straight line, any turning completely stops you. That being said we found an ice plant patch that worked pretty well as a jump and it was fun for a couple of hours. I have never had the desire to go back.

I can honestly say that I've never even thought of that. But it kinda seems like a wast of time unless you're on a huuuuge dune.

An excelent way to ruin your board, sandpaper but nice for a few laughs. But i'd definetly try to doo it in dubay in that artificial dome :)).
