the only way i know how to describe today is "f*cked-up deep." i havent ridden deeper untouched fresh snow in my life, and it was only that much more amazing that it was PNW blower pow. and yes, i have pictures and gogglecam footage. rode my new charlie 58 and its sexy, but damn i wished i had the fish. unfortunately not every part of the mountain is on the steeper side so i hiked out of places that were too flat to keep going about 3 times... how are you supposed to keep going in over waist deep pow on a mellow incline.. haha. the snow conditions today were what we dream of. definitely mounting the fish for tomorrow and its only gonna be deeper. for now.... i dont know what im going to do with video cause the contour stuff never turns out as good as i want. i dont really like the perspective/wideness of that camera. bummer, but oh well. haden went up after me (he had class in the morning) and called me after, said the same thing, best snow hes ever ridden, "balls deep"
waist deep fresh

Day 1: Mt. Spokane 11/28/10
Pretty good first day, went up with a group of people I have never ridden with (except one of them) so it was cool getting to know some new people and explore the mountain. Mt. Spokane is pretty tiny, but it was only $38 for a lift ticket and was closer than Schweitzer in ID. Snow was pretty good, soft groomers with some pow on the sides, got a few pow turns but mostly just cruised on the groomers. As a group we taught a friend how to ride, by the end of the day he could do toe side turns and falling leaf, pretty good for his first day. Last run was a powdery mogul run which was challenging and exhausting, but in a good way, felt good when I got to the bottom and I feel like the next time I'm on a run like that I'll be able to do more consistent turns. Half the group was pretty tired around 3pm so we chilled in the lodge bar until the rest of the group had gotten their fill. Lots of smiles and "woohoo!"s throughout the day. Felt great getting my board back under me, hoping to hit up Schweitzer in two weeks for some bigger mountain riding with some good tree runs, Mt. Spokane's trees were really close together and a bit above the groups skill level. Pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

day 9, fish again. another amazing pow run. fairly steep, deep, and almost totally untouched. the run has a bunch of shelves basically so you just keep dropping. pointed it and it was killer. im bummed the contour footage didnt show it as well but it was like a 15 foot shooter to pillow to 15 foot shooter. felt awesome. great day. video will be up pretty soon, just gotta save it and upload. pictures.... hiking up. dude on the left in the back is michael penn, i think the prime photographer for our local paper. haha. ill have a picture from the paper probably tomorrow.. ![]() more hiking ![]() the lighting was AWESOME on the mountains way back there.. this is just one shot, from the top ![]() ryan before we dropped ![]() screenshots ryan cortes, the shralper from some of my skate videos, dropped off the lift offload station into a killer pow line. he was stoked. his first day and he borrowed hadens malolo 58.. board is perfect, hes an aggressive surfer and skater. ![]() backside slasher ![]() me from the contour... this was the run. shelf after shelf covered in blower, pointed it. awesome. ![]() poder! ![]() turn! ![]() |

todays video. i had the contour rotated so it would be looking up a little more, just one notch on the circle, but i also wore my strap a little lower which brought it up more. i think inbetween that and how it was yesterday would be perfect, to see your nose a lot but also see whats ahead of you better. in the shot where i follow ryan in the orange jacket, after he drops off the little spot and then flies away into the pow as i follow him, thats where i pointed the double shelf thing. bummed it didnt turn out that rad on the contour, you cant really tell much, but most of that till i slashed was in the air. felt sooo awesome. |

Here's another one from earlier this week. These were my first park laps of the season, and it was a fun day at Keystone. Too bad most of the features are so dang huge that I don't feel like warming up on them.
On a side note, I've had some similar issues with the contour as Spenser, but after messing around with the settings I've found I like the results a little better than with the default settings. I've found the 60 fps and lens options look a little better and work better for me, but you have to have a pretty fast computer to edit the footage in HD...

Day 5
Threw together a video quick of what little footage I got from yesterday. 8.5" of fresh is definitely a pow day in MN. With the Saturday crowd it definitely got tracked out fast, but it was still a good time. My woman's first day for the season and Kimchi's second. She's wearing green pants and purple jacket, he's got green pants w/ gray jacket.
And some pics:

bizzare how eaglecrest can have that much ridiculous pow and not even be open yet.
Down here in the southern sierra nevada, resorts have been open since thanksgiving. We've already had two deep (2') powder days since opening (nothing like eaglecrest) and I haven't even been up, yet...so f*king spoiled. Supposed to drop over a foot by tomorrow morning, but I still haven't got around to scraping my storage layer off .nice snow krazy...but I have to guess kimchi is missing tahoe, nevertheless definitely getting the craving from you guys photos |

I really wish I made it up on monday? Is this filmed with a GoPro? Is it just me or is that board too small for that much pow. Looked like it was sinking too much. |

it looked like the runs were just really flat. its hard to float when its too mellow. the steeper the better.
we need a lot of coverage because the mountain is so rough underneath.. trees, logs, stumps, and just hairy terrain in general. if it were just dirt runs like so many other resorts we would have been open some time ago.

well the fish runs about 4cm shorter than it actually is because of the way its designed. my 56 is only as long as a 52.
its the fisheye though, that makes it look shorter. you know with a 160 fish, that nose is way bigger than it looks.

Put in day 1 last sunday at Welch Village. I was taking gaper falls everywhere getting my legs back under me, but it was a lot of fun.
Put in day 2 on Saturday. I'd guestimate that we got around 6-8" overnight and it was a fabulous pow day by Minnesota standards. A lot of it got tracked really quick but there was actually a lot of relatively fresh stuff immediately adjacent to trees on the side of runs. One thing I've noticed about Minnesotans... they don't ride near trees. There was also a sweet jump... not sure if it was man made or just happened to be there, but it was perfectly shaped to throw stuff off of. The landing was a little sketchy, but still soft enough to power through. I threw a nice non-tweaked method. Popped off perfectly, grabbed, and held solid. Came down a little tail heavy, but overall it was the cleanest trick I've thrown in my life. Now that I think back it was probably the only clean trick I threw that day, but it was an awesome feeling.

Had my first day yesterday and it was awesome!
Me and my brother went up to Hunter Mountain, NY..they only had five trails open and conditions weren't the greatest, especially since it was their most difficult terrain that was open and the snow quality made it harder, but for a first day it was amazing. We got away with both using the big lift card so it was only $17.50 for the day, I had a great time.
I also took a really crappy video, I was trying out my gopro, def have to get on some smoother runs and grab a tripod so it's not right in my hand...this was my first time filming myself so I'll get better as the season goes on. |
