I agree 100%

And seriously, what's more annoying/intrusive/disruptive in a thread - a barely noticeable "Haha, that's funny" post from some kid just trying to participate (regardless of the fact that they may, or may not, be pointwhoring), or incessant juvenile bullying (like we've seen in this thread) from those who SHOULD, but clearly DON'T, know better?

im afraid ill have to disagree with you there chief. As someone said somewhere else, 'but do you get a point for writing haha! on another forum?" There is a system here that rewards you directly for contributing, and if you are seen to be abusing that system by posting any old crap to get your points, then other people who do contribute wonder why they're putting in the effort. If we dont flag people then its not only unfair on those people, but it also helps drive away some of the people who not only contribute, but contribute a great deal, and wonder why the forums are filled with utter dross posted by people trying to score free gear.

I do try and stay out of it, particularly in the boardroom, since its very much a 'whatever' type place. But honestly, it is a teensy bit insufferable.

And none of this even gets to the reviews which is what really drives me insane. I genuinely dislike that people are lying through their teeth to people theyre supposed to be helping make financial decisions. We are all supposed to have each others backs at least in this one regard. But points make this an obvious problem.

I hear ya mate - but the point I was making was that the bullying pics and video grabs are FAR "more annoying/intrusive/disruptive in a thread" than inane pointwhoring posts, so it's really hypocritical of these people to complain.

Personally, I'd be happy to see points for posts done away with alltogether - however I do understand their importance/relevance. Attributing points for positive contributions encourages regular posting, which keeps forums fresh. I think there should be a positive/negative rating system - where a post gets a point only if its positive/negative rating is in the positive. The positive/negative thing works in other forums - and "spam" or disruptive posts can be hidden from view if the negative rating is sufficient.

Totally with you on this one!

It should be a prerequisite that you actually OWN (linked to purchase order history) and have USED a product BEFORE reviewing it. Failure to adhere to this should result in a loss of points. The positive/negative ratings should relate directly to the amount of points a review gets (perhaps to a maximum of 5 per review).

I actually agree with this.  Other sites I have seen only allow you to review something if it is in your order history.  Would be a much better way to do things.

I would have spammed it too, not because of what you were talking about, but because it read like some "viral marketing" post and didn't make a ton of sense. If you had rephrased what you wrote in such a way that it was more understandable and inclusive, it probably wouldn't have happened.

That would be me. Ive told you why you got spammed. I told you in the thread in fact. You make it sound so mysterious like there was no possible explanation. Of course i assume you didnt read it because you already had your five posts and were busy doing something else until now. :/

PS. What pictures of stupid people? DO you mean the picture threads? The ones in THIS section of the forum. The section of the forum that i said "had you have posted it in the board room i wouldnt have done anything, but

IT WAS BECAUSE YOU POSTED IT IN THE GEAR TALK SECTION WHEN IT HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH SNOWBOARD GEAR THAT I FLAGGED IT.

(oh, and because you were clearly taking the piss by also posting a point hussy thread about stupid people being stupid forever in the same section... not to forget of course the incident last week when you randomly bumped up two threads in the classifieds section from two years ago and made some stupid comment on so you could get your points).

As you can see, i wont flag your stupid idiot posts in this section. :)

This is how this thread went down.  The OP asked about appealing a spam flag.  We kindly asked him what got flagged.  It turns out it was a review for a pair of pants he tried on in a store.  That is not an acceptable review.  When a place is giving you points towards free gear for reviews they need to be in depth and informative.  Sierra prefers that you have used this item multiple times or have at minimum used it for one day on the hill.  There are multiple guides on sierra that show what a good/acceptable review is.

snowbowlmt made multiple threads yesterday that went downhill fast.  I PMed with him and asked him to relax and he just kept right on being a dick to most everyone.  So you know what happened?  Everyone was a dick right back to him.  I don't think having an expert member/moderator title means you have to let people be a dick to you and you can't post funny/crude videos and pictures in response.  We have been posting funny/crude videos and pictures of each other for as long as this forum has been around.  It is the internet folks try not to take it so seriously.

Just to remind everyone there are just a few basic rules for the sierra forums.

1.  No personal attacks
2.  Treat other people with respect
3.  Use the search function before making a new thread especially if it is about stomp pads, favorite rider/resort/gear,
4.  Don't piss of BRUIZZA (okay this one isn't really a rule)

i love how this thread has gone two pages. never thought it'd last 10 minutes after the turns it started taking.
p.s. good work with the respect rule. i can dig it. thats what i worked on and got ridiculed all day yesterday to achieve. bold letters explicitly telling people to stop being antagonistic feces piles

i absolutely understand and agree about the useless reviews, but posts are a different story.  first off, what is "useful enough" to qualify by someone's standards is very subjective and is definitely a power trip that has been abused.  i'm also sure the flaggers are not 100% innocent in making minor, sarcastic, joking, or even just agreeing comments with other posts....i'm guessing they just feel there's are more important.

but theyre kind of not. If you do agree, you agree also about the fact you get points for contributing. We are trying to keep this system fair and its a gigantic pain in the ass if im honest. The system is to encourage people to contribute positively, and we HAVE to make judgement calls on it.

Understand we were given the capacity to insta-flag posts for a reason and that reason is to protect the points system from abuse. The reason they want to protect it from abuse is because 2,000 people spamming for their 5 points a day turns the forums into utter and complete crap. This DRIVES AWAY people from the forums who might want to contribute and thus hurts business at the end of the day.

Also recognise this MASSIVE thing about points. If you have 1 or 2 spam flags against you, its no big thing. Hell, ive accidentally flagged someone because i meant to press the reply button but hit the spam button instead. I apologised to them and spam flagged my own post as a penance. If you have 3-5, sure i can get with that. Its no big deal. You screwed up a couple of times, it probably wasn't deliberate. If you're under 5 you can assume freely that we maybe got the call wrong at least on 1 or 2 of those occasions if not all 5.

But if you have more than 20 flags on your account, you've consistently shown that you are a dick. By the time you hit 20 you should be seriously contemplating the way you contribute to the forums. If you're still moving towards 30 at this point then theres honestly no helping you. The day you hit 30, (and its a number that is honest to god not easy to hit), is the day you've shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can't contribute positively to the community. I mean come on, its not like its 5 flags and you're banned. You have to make 30 posts of absolute dross. It takes the personal judgement part out of the judgement call.

This whole subjective judgements thing is pretty ludicrous when you have to make 30 posts of utter crap to lose your privileges. After 20, its a fair bet that you ARE being a douche, and you are leeching off the system.

well they are boots meant for snowboarding so yeah you shouldn't put up a review if you haven't used it for it's intended purpose.

who knows they might be nice now, but on the slopes things may change.

That's actually an issue with the community home page. If you look at his profile or the product reviews, it's only there once.

if only i could give you your points back, ridiculing cry babies and assholes is the lifeblood we all thrive on.

I also forgot to mention in my typically long winded rant:

The amount of stuff we see that is pure crap but we don't flag massively massively outweighs the stuff we do. I know it seems like all we do is run around flagging stuff, but i think ive honestly flagged about 10-15 posts maximum on the forums. Its just because i actually tell the person i flagged them (i beleive in accountability) that they assume im running around like a busy bee flagging everything. So even if the entire population had one account, you'd still have another 15-20 posts of crap to go before you lose your points for future posts.

Im definitely in the high teens for reviews though.

My advice is

1. Avoid spamming any other section that this one. This one has a much more liberal policy on what constitutes spam. Do try and stay on topic. If you do howvere make a post in the wrong section and its pretty clear you made a mistake, most likely someone who can, will just move the post for you. But if you are posting several off topic threads in the wrong section, well thats a pretty clear indication youre being a douche.

2. The funny picture thread is pretty heavily policed. Not because its some super special thread, but because community members got fed up early on in the thread with people saying "thats funny!" and asked for people to stop it.

3. The reviews section: Need i say more? If you post a fake review in here you are a selfish jerk and you deserve it.

Understand though, you can however do what you like at the end of the day, but if I personally see it, i'm obviously going to flag you for it. And not because i love to abuse power, but because I want everyone legitimately contributing to feel that their contribution is appreciated by the community at large.

PS. I think i also speak for almost every expert member out there when i say we cant way for the day to arrive when we dont have the power to flag your posts. It means the points system is dead and we dont have to read your post through this warped lense of 'the legitimate community'. Even when i lose my awesome red tag and fantastic 20% discount it will be nice to just look at a post that says 'lol' and see only 'lol'. :)

ya honestly i feel sorry for you guys that are expert members. sure you get like 2 percent more discount and a free board, but you gotta deal with so much bush league $hit. i dont even care about my 3 points honestly. once i realized i was in the wrong i stopped caring about the 3 points. at that point all i cared about were the many random gouche ticklers that started personally attacking me on just about all of my threads because they saw one of my other threads. Get a fu(king life. nuff said

This is definitely way overboard...especially for a thread that is all about posting funny pictures and commenting on them.  It's not vulgar, not attacking, is actually related to the topic, and can also be intended to actually support other posters' efforts in a positive way.

Flagging things of this nature implies that folks ARE a little drunk on a power trip and very FASCSIST against folks trying to actively participate in what (I believe) is intended to be an open, diverse community.  Whether they are just going for points or not (or any other personal motivations, for that matter) really seems like it should be of no concern to you.  That is why the daily cap was put there in the first place...not so you could nit-pick at the minor comments made by folks that go through the trouble to go to the site everyday, view advertisements, and perhaps participate in other threads in what a handful of elitists may dub a more relavant manner.

If, for some strange reason, a ton of folks complained about someone making too many comments about snow at a particular resort on a thread topic about bindings, I seriously doubt reviewers are suddenly going to start flagging those.

funny pics thread youre supposed to post pics.... not 10 posts of 'lol' 'that was funny'
people are encouraged if they want to comment to at least also post a picture.

I personally enjoy that thread... or at least used to, until people started commenting/arguing a lot. I dont have time to surf the net looking for funny sh!t.

Spot on.

People need to remember that the title of "Expert" would basically only translate to "moderator" in other forums. Sadly, there's definitely some narcissistic "Experts" here who abuse their power - ippy's not one of them though.

why was the movie thread locked( i know the answer), but isn't it suppose to be that way, the nature of the thread? only a few abuse it, a few don't know how to play, but for the most part it ran smoothe. ippy may not abuse his power, but he is certainly a narcissist. have you read his page long post? and for the people that continue to put lame reviews up for everyone to see in this thread, isn't there a thread for that?

I hope you all noticed a common factor within those dodgy reviews - NO negatives in the approval ratings!

If you come across genuinely bad reviews, vote them DOWN.

But that does nothing to dissuade someone from writing a horrible review does it?  They're getting rewarded for crap reviews.  How is that fair to everyone else who takes time and effort to write a legit review?

Also how helpful is it, if you have one legit review and 10s of crap reviews saying the board is great, etc when none of them have any experience with it?

I thought the whole purpose of voting down bad reviews was because with enough negative votes they get deleted, and the reviewer loses their points?

It has to be flagged 5 times by a community member or by one expert/staff for it to be deleted and the reviewer to lose points.  I use to go and flag reviews, but the way the current system is set up, it's a pain trying to weed through all the useless reviews and flagging each one.

yeah, if even people who actually can flag reviews look at it and think "christ i cant be bothered to wade through ALL THAT!!!" its pretty unlikely that someone, no matter how community focused they are, is going to go through a million reviews to put a little flag next to the no and hope 4 other people out there are willing to do the same thing. No one really bothers and its fairly understandable in truth :)

I still vote down every bad review I see. Perhaps a better system would be for reviewers to receive points ONLY if their reviews are at least one point in the positive? It could be one point per positive, up to a maximum of 5?
