For those of you who aren't familiar, this is probably one of the most extreme in bounds runs in North America. It is located at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
I have ridden Jackson before, but this run hasn't been open or conditions weren't advisable. Was wondering if anyone has done this run before.
Nut up or shut up I guess.

EXTREME!!!!!
That doesn't look that bad. The biggest fear factor would be the danger of avalanche or that whole wind lip chunking off. |

i'm sure it doesn't look that bad sitting at your computer. 60deg slope after the drop also would be hectic.
but hey, maybe you have got more skills with those things.

Who's got 2 thumbs and crushed good ol Corbet's? THIS GUY! Theres a few crappy cell phone pics in my profile. The drop-in is the gnarly part for sure..after u get past that part its steep n sweet! As far as the ''danger'' from avalanches go... its in-bounds, and easily accessible. Any schmo can go over to it and peek over the edge... its avy controlled... so let it rip |

ummm yey! I remembered chad had been there... because you know this chick asked to hear all about it... b/c I'm slightly obsessed with hearing about other people's death defying snowboard stories.
If you guys do this... part of me wants to go... on the tram... to video tape it! |

They are my bread and butter. The big thing is having a spotter and avalanche danger. I'd kill for that type of terrain. It's like hitting cliffs at resorts. It's a huge gamble. Usually you need to be the first person through or else someone else is going to side slip the landing down to ice. A 20ft drop to ice is going to end your season v v v v v v 'bounce'.>>>> ![]() |

I would love to try that if I knew I wouldn't hit any of the big pointy rocks. That would probably do a good job of ending a season.

Yeeeaahhhh, how could I have forgotten the actual backflip? Dammmnnnn . . . JH was way fun last year, unfortunately we did not hit at a good snow time. If I had more time to spend I would have gotten a winterful of that coldsmoke that hit a couple weeks before I got there
-b P.S. We got there for the first week of moustache march, I cannot remember the last time I saw so many women with facial hair

Remembering this thread for future reference.
Since it's inbound wouldn't the resort dynamite the mountain or check to see if it's okay before they open that part of the resort. |

Hey MT
Have you ridden the big couloir at Big Sky to compare? Corbet's seems to have a tougher drop in... but from the pictures here, the rest seems a little more mellow than BS. |

I've seen many pics and vids from the top, and a few crappy one from below and thought "yeah that's kinda rough, but it doesn't look 'that' bad." The view in that second 90s era pic changes my opinion completely. Didn't realize the length of the vert portion of the drop in. Consider me very impressed MT.
Someday I'll be that good. Someday. |

I've put this story on here before, but at BS last year a skiier ripped down the couloir with border collie following him down. When he got down to the tram line someone yelled, "your dog just rode the couloir better than most people," which was true. I can't FN wait for it to get deep -b

bryman i was at JH last year, end of feb and conditions werent very good to say the least, not a very good year in general, but here is another person with two thumbs that has hit it, in the past when there was snow, and like mt says its all about having the balls to stick the jump and first turns. going back in feb again this year, maybe hook up with you guys, we have a rather large "posse" heading up again, after two weeks in CO. edit, sorry, meant infiniti...

the Big is on my radar for this winter... whenever we're up there I'm never with someone that has a piep but plan on changing this this winter. The whole sign for a time, sign out, sign back in thing is kinda a pain tho. Hopefully when I get the chance I'll have my Go-Pro for everyone to get a first hand look at it... same with Corbet's....

looks like it would be doable on a pow day! then again most things are easier when you have a nice pillow landing! I guess I'll see when I get there, the pucker factor changes alot when your standing on top looking down

Definitely go for it. It is a pain having to sign up, especially after some snow when it's a mad dash to get up there in the morning. But you don't have to sign back in after taking the run. Most of the time the patrollers up there are pretty relaxed about it... and unless you go in there for rental equipment and trip over your own feet, there's no real check for avy gear. |

Even so, it's still the biggest danger. 60 degree slopes are not to be messed with. And usually, if they bomb it, it slides off anyway. The bowls at snowbasin would be that way. Every time they bomb the run it just slides down to the crud. It's a lose lose situation with in-bounds riding. |

yah avalanches can happen on slopes with a degree greater than 30 degree. Your avy zone as far as degrees are concerned is typically 35-50 degrees. Once you get steeper than that the snow tends to not stack up as much because of the fact that its so steep. Tons of other factors also go into this, past snow fall(a few layers down), recent weather, slope aspect, etc.... All of this is gone over in your typical avalanche course, which everyone who plans on riding advanced terrain really should look into taking. Especially if you plan on venturing out of bounds.
Yes there's a cornice but this area is maintained very carefully. They aren't bombing these areas when the mountain is open because of the fact that yes...what they are setting off is going to run down into terrain below these avy areas. That being said theres nothing like hearing the guns or bombs going off in the morning... For more info I definitely recommend checking out www.Avalanche.org they have a plethura of info and have groups located all over the world. Get out there and edjumahcate yerselves! |

95% of slides occur on slopes between 30% and 40%. Steeper slopes tend to slough off sooner and not build up to serious avalanche potential

I went to Jackson this summer and I rode the tram up and saw it with no snow and it looked insane. So steep. I've never done any cliff drops or chute runs before so maybe I'm just being a baby but I'd have to work up a lot of courage to try that.
